Joseph Duggar will not be permitted to spend unsupervised time with his four children while awaiting trial in his Florida child molestation case after a judge declined to modify the conditions of his release.
The ruling came during a recent court hearing, where Duggar’s legal team asked the court to allow him to have private contact with his children as he remains free on bond. Although the judge agreed that Duggar could continue seeing his children, those visits must remain supervised, rejecting his request for unrestricted access.
The decision leaves in place one of the more significant conditions attached to Duggar’s release as prosecutors continue pursuing criminal charges against the former 19 Kids and Counting star.
Joseph was arrested in March after authorities in Bay County, Florida, accused him of sexually abusing a child during a family vacation in Panama City Beach in 2020. According to investigators, the alleged victim—now 14 years old—told police the incidents occurred when she was just 9 years old.
Court documents allege that Duggar repeatedly invited the girl to sit on his lap while the families were vacationing together. Investigators say the encounters later progressed to occasions in which he allegedly asked the child to sit beside him under a blanket before inappropriately touching her.
According to the arrest affidavit, the alleged victim told investigators the incidents occurred multiple times over the course of the trip. Authorities also claim Duggar later apologized and that the alleged conduct stopped afterward.
The investigation remained dormant for several years before the girl’s father confronted Duggar earlier this year. Law enforcement alleges that during those conversations, Duggar acknowledged his actions. Investigators say he later made similar admissions while speaking with detectives, leading Florida authorities to file criminal charges.
Duggar has denied all allegations against him and entered not guilty pleas. His attorneys continue to maintain his innocence as the case moves through the court system.
Following his arrest, Joseph was released after posting a $600,000 bond, allowing him to return to Arkansas while awaiting future court appearances. However, his release came with a series of conditions designed to limit contact with minors and ensure compliance with court orders.
One of the issues raised by the defense involved Duggar’s ability to spend time with the four children he shares with his wife, Kendra Duggar. The couple, who married in 2017, are parents to four young children and have long portrayed themselves publicly as devoted parents during and after their appearances on the Duggar family’s reality television programs.
At the hearing, Joseph’s attorneys sought permission for him to have unsupervised visits with the children, arguing that the court should relax the existing restrictions while the criminal case remains pending.
The judge ultimately rejected that request.
Instead, the court ruled that Duggar may continue seeing his children only if another approved adult is present throughout the visits. The judge did not indicate whether those restrictions could be revisited at a later date, leaving open the possibility that the issue could return to court before trial.
The decision represents another legal setback for Duggar, whose criminal case has attracted widespread public attention since his arrest.
In addition to the Florida prosecution, Joseph is also facing a separate criminal case in Arkansas. Both he and his wife, Kendra, have been charged with multiple counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor and second-degree false imprisonment. Prosecutors have emphasized that the Arkansas allegations are unrelated to the Florida molestation case.
Both Joseph and Kendra have pleaded not guilty to the Arkansas charges, and those proceedings continue independently of the Florida case.
The legal challenges have significantly altered life for the family in recent months. Joseph and Kendra have listed their Arkansas home for sale, while court records and public filings have documented a series of hearings, bond conditions, and motions connected to both criminal cases.
Joseph, once known for appearing alongside his family on TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting and later Counting On, now faces the possibility of severe penalties if convicted in Florida. Prosecutors continue preparing their case as pretrial proceedings move forward, while Duggar remains free under court supervision.
For now, the judge’s latest ruling means Joseph will continue to have contact with his children, but only under supervision, with the court declining to grant him the unrestricted family access he had requested while awaiting trial.
