My video doorbell caught my wife sneaking her affair partner out in 4K. I made sure the entire world saw what she had been up to. I’m 38, and I’ve been married to Amelia, also 38, for 12 years. After that many years, you’d think you’d know someone.

But I guess my own experience proved that isn’t true. The worst part is I’m nearly 40. Where am I even meant to start with romance now? I probably won’t get back into serious dating.

I can’t risk putting my all into it like I did before, only to have it end in such stupid fashion. I thought I could trust Amelia. She’s always been honest. Whenever men approached her, she’d tell me about it, not because I demanded it, but because she was open.

It usually made for a funny story. Someone who never hid those kinds of things seemed like someone who was honest most of the time. That was all a facade at the end of the day. The only reason I found out was our Ring doorbell.

I travel a lot for work. On one trip, I was at a hotel, up late working. Around 5:00 a. m.

, I got a notification that the doorbell detected motion at the front door. At that hour, I was concerned, so I opened the app right away. I don’t know if she forgot I was connected or if she really thought she’d dodge the motion detection. I saw my wife coming out the front door.

She stood close to the camera, but I could see someone else squeezing to the side of the frame, trying not to be captured. I think she assumed she was blocking the camera’s view entirely. Because of the porch layout, I could only see the person’s arm. But later in the video, the person accidentally slipped into frame, and I got a perfect view of his face.

It was a man I didn’t recognize. The fact that my wife was wearing nightwear made it even worse. I couldn’t make excuses for her, like claiming it was an emergency plumber. They both moved out of frame, and about 15 or 20 seconds later, I heard a car start.

Then she came back inside and looked right at the camera. About 5 minutes later, she texted, “Hey, baby. ” I didn’t reply. I acted like I was asleep because I was sure that’s what she was trying to confirm.

The next day, she claimed she missed me and that’s why she texted at an odd hour. I saved the video. I knew I wasn’t losing my mind. There was a man stealthily leaving my house at 5:00 a.

m. No one ever came or left at that hour when I was around. My brain refused to accept it at first, but after trying to think of different explanations, it was clear the most obvious one was exactly what was going on. The rest of my trip was wasted because I couldn’t think straight.

When I got back, she told me a friend had been at a bar, his battery died, and he came over to charge his phone before leaving. I asked what time, and she said she wasn’t sure but it was in the early hours. I acknowledged it and let the conversation go because I already knew I was being lied to. The story wasn’t ridiculous, but I could poke holes in it.

The person she was with wasn’t someone I knew, yet he knew our house well enough to come on foot from a random bar. If she had a male friend who knew our house that well, I’d know him too. Plus, she had clearly tried to block the camera. There would be no need for that if her guest was innocent.

I didn’t confront her just then. It was too soon, and I knew I’d lose the advantage. I only asked which friend it was because she’d very blatantly left out a name. She said it was Shawn, someone I knew and liked.

But the person in the video certainly wasn’t Shawn. I just said, “Okay,” and left it. Instead of digging through her phone, I hired a PI for my next work trip, which was in two weeks. It was hard living with her, especially with my trust issues.

I made sure not to sleep with her, coming up with excuse after excuse. I wasn’t going to risk catching anything. When I traveled, I gave the PI all the necessary information. Over the four days I was away, she met up with her affair partner twice.

The first day, I sent her a selfie from my hotel room, which I think confirmed I was truly out of town. She then told her affair partner to meet her. From what the PI told me, this was likely how he entered the house the first night. He was in the passenger seat of her car.

She’d picked him up and they came home together. Since they pulled into the garage, I had no idea she had someone with her. Why he’d gone through the front door the other time, I genuinely don’t know. This time, she went through the trouble of opening the garage door so he could leave.

I assume she was spooked from last time. He left around 7:00 a. m. , and the PI took pictures of her standing in the garage wearing nightwear.

The second time the PI spotted them was when he followed her out of work on the third day. She went to a fast food place and met up with the affair partner. They bought food and sat in his car together. That’s where the PI got pictures of them kissing.

They kissed for a long time twice, once when they got in the car and again right before she left. That fast food meetup also gave me his name because the PI ran his license plate. The guy’s name was Dennis, and he was also married with three kids. This man decided to leave his wife and children to slink around with a married woman.

That likely explained why he left at odd hours. He probably lied to his poor wife about working late. With all that evidence, I went straight to a divorce lawyer when I got home. I paid the retainer and waited a few days for the papers.

She was served right before she closed from work so she’d come straight home with her emotions at their peak. I didn’t want her to have time to mull it over. When she got home, she was red in the face and fuming. She threw the envelope at me and demanded an explanation.

I told her they were divorce papers because I wanted to get divorced. She insisted there was no good reason. I let her know I knew that was a lie, and she knew it too. She maintained she’d been loving, communicated well, and always attended to her wifely duties.

I told her I had a very good reason: she’d cheated on me. She acted surprised, and I was shocked at how good her acting was. It made me wonder how many other lies I’d believed. I told her to put the act away because I knew for a fact she’d cheated.

I asked if she knew Dennis. She hesitated, then said yes. I lied that he’d called and admitted everything. She initially denied it, but the more I told her about him, the more she seemed to believe me.

I mentioned the restaurant where the PI spotted them. At that point, she started to panic. I’d presented her with too much truth, and she had nowhere to go in her defense. I saw her shoulder sag when she realized she was caught with no reasonable way out.

She admitted she’d cheated and said she was sorry, claiming I wouldn’t understand why. She said it only happened when I went on trips because she was lonely. I told her my trips were hardly ever a week long. Why would five days or less be reason enough to cheat?

I told her to stop making fake excuses for being a bad person. She’d cheated with a married man, so not only had she ruined our marriage, but she’d contributed to ruining theirs too. That part seemed to hurt her. I let her know I had evidence but wasn’t going to show her.

I told her she couldn’t stay in the house. She said she had nowhere to go, but when I started to get mad, she got the hint. She left for good, only coming to pick up more of her things. We barely spoke, and I’m glad she didn’t try to convince me to take her back.

I paid the PI one more time to get Dennis’s home address. I wanted to confront him, but I vowed not to be violent no matter how provoked. When I got there, his wife answered the door, not him. She was guarded, and our conversation happened on her doorstep.

I explained who I was and told her I’d come looking for her husband. I tried to prepare her for the bad news, but it still hit her hard when I told her her husband was cheating with my wife. She didn’t believe me until I showed her the pictures of them kissing in his car. That’s when she invited me in.

I told her everything up to me serving Amelia with divorce papers. She cried a lot, and I really felt bad for her. She seemed to accept that I made the right choice. She had three kids with this liar, and she deserved to know.

She politely said she didn’t want to see me again, and I haven’t spoken to her since. I never met Dennis either, and I’m glad because I had a bad feeling things would’ve ended physically. We got divorced, and it wasn’t the best outcome, which irritates me. I got to keep the house, which is why I’ll always advocate for men not to move out during divorce.

However, aside from the house, I’m paying very hefty alimony. She cheated on me and still gets rewarded. How does that make any sense? After the divorce, I decided to do what the system couldn’t do for me.

I had the footage of her leaving with her affair partner and the pictures of them kissing. As Amelia got older, she started looking for ways to feel important by starting groups and joining elections for community positions. She’s pretty well known in our town, and I realized how badly I could hurt her by exposing who she really was. I wrote a long post tagging her, explaining the situation with pictures attached.

I posted it on Facebook and in the groups she was a big part of, plus other social media platforms. The posts didn’t blow up, but they’re online forever. I added her full name to each, so anyone who searches will see the kind of person she is. She came to the house fuming.

She barged in, and I told her to get out. She said she didn’t have to listen to me. She told me I’d messed with the wrong person and ruined her life even though the judge determined everything. She said I had no right to seek revenge.

I laughed, which only riled her up more. I told her she didn’t have the moral high ground. She’d done the dishonest thing first. She said she’d never been more embarrassed because people she hadn’t spoken to in years called to ask what happened.

I smiled and said that’s what she deserved. I told her one more time to leave, and when she didn’t, I started calling the police. Only then did she get out. Two of the groups she was part of, including a church group, removed her from leadership positions.

Now she’s just a regular member. That’s good enough for me because I know how much it kills her to be knocked from her pedestal. I’m stuck paying alimony, so I’m glad I got the last hit. I’m also glad I told Dennis’s wife.

Whether she divorces him is none of my business, but I hope she does. That’s what he deserves. The whole experience has made me scared of dealing with women romantically again. Maybe one day I’ll change my mind.

For now, I’ll stay single.
