“So do you,” she replied with that playful smile. When it was time for the vows, Robert held her hands. “I promise to love you every day, on the easy days and the hard ones.
I promise to always trust you, support you, and make crooked pancakes for breakfast. And I promise I’ll never test you again, because I already know the answer. You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me. ”
Ashley wiped her eyes, laughing.
“My turn. Robert, you came into my life when I least expected it. You gave me a family, a home, and a love I never thought I deserved. I promise to love you, make you laugh, and sing off-key songs for the rest of my life.
”
“Please don’t,” someone in the crowd joked. When the officiant said, “You may kiss the bride,” Theo shouted before anyone else, “Finally! ”
The reception was joyful. Kids ran around, adults danced.
During a quiet moment, Robert, Ashley, and Theo stepped away and sat on the porch steps. “This was the best day,” Theo said, resting his head on Ashley’s shoulder. “It really was,” Robert agreed. Ashley held both their hands.
“Thank you for everything. ”
Theo looked at her. “Are you really my mom now? ”
Ashley felt her heart tighten.
“If you want me to be, I do. ”
He hugged her. “You always were. ”
Months later, when the baby was born, a beautiful little girl named Emma, Theo held his baby sister gently.
“Hi, Emma. I’m your big brother, and I’m going to teach you everything about being amazing. ”
Robert and Ashley, standing hand in hand next to the crib, just smiled. Because in the end, they had learned the most important lesson of all.
