In a tragic turn of events that shook a close-knit Tennessee community, office manager Starr Harris was found brutally murdered in the woods behind her home office on June 1, 2010. Starr, a devoted mother and wife, had built a life filled with love after marrying Rick Harris, co-owner of a thriving lawn care company in Drummonds, Tennessee. Together, they blended their families, raising eight children while fostering a warm environment for their employees, often treating them like family. “Starr was such a loving, kind, giving person,” recalled Kelly Phelps, Rick’s business partner, highlighting the joy she brought to their workplace.
However, the evening of June 1 took a dark turn when Kelly grew concerned after failing to reach Starr. When Starr’s stepson Nathan returned home, he found the office in disarray, leading him to venture into the woods where he made the horrifying discovery of Starr’s body. “Nathan was coming up from the woods yelling and screaming,” Kelly recounted, recalling the moment that forever changed their lives.
Former Tipton County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Donna Turner described the scene as “dark as pitch,” noting the gruesome details of Starr’s injuries, which suggested she had fought fiercely against her attacker. Investigators quickly ruled out robbery as a motive, finding no signs of forced entry and a stack of cash left untouched in the office.
As detectives delved deeper into the case, they began to scrutinize those closest to Starr, including her husband Rick, who was reportedly miles away at a job site during the murder. Despite rumors surrounding his past infidelity, witnesses described him as devastated by the loss of his wife. “The look of sheer terror and just horror and heartbreak on his face overtook his whole body,” Kelly shared.
The investigation took a critical turn when a used condom was discovered at the crime scene, hidden beneath the leaves. This piece of evidence suggested a sexual assault had occurred, prompting hopes for a DNA match. Alongside the condom, authorities found a unique lighter resembling a gun, which investigators believed may have been used to intimidate Starr.
As the investigation unfolded, detectives learned that one of Rick’s employees, Rickey Bell, had been present on the day of the murder. Although he initially denied involvement, he provided a DNA sample and claimed he had left town shortly after the phone call with Starr. However, the DNA results from the condom revealed a 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔 twist: while Rick’s DNA was found on the outside, Rickey’s was on the inside, indicating a connection to the crime.
Rickey, who had a history of violence, was subsequently arrested for first-degree murder and sexual assault.
