Comedian Carlos Mencia, once a major figure in American stand-up comedy, is now facing serious legal trouble after prosecutors in Los Angeles filed 12 felony charges related to alleged tax evasion.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office, Mencia is accused of failing to report and pay taxes on more than $8.7 million in income earned between 2019 and 2024. Authorities say the charges include six counts of failing to file personal income tax returns and six counts of failing to file corporate tax returns, all with the alleged intent to evade taxes.
Prosecutors claim the investigation uncovered a long-term pattern of non-compliance, stating that Mencia had received dozens of notices from tax authorities but allegedly failed to respond or correct the filings. The case is being handled by a newly formed Business Tax Fraud Unit, which is focused on high-income individuals accused of tax-related crimes.
Officials say Mencia was arrested at his Los Angeles home and is now facing potential penalties that could include significant prison time if convicted. Legal experts note that each felony count could carry serious consequences, especially when combined into a multi-year tax evasion case of this scale.
Mencia, known for his Comedy Central show Mind of Mencia, rose to fame in the early 2000s but has largely stayed out of mainstream spotlight in recent years. His career has previously been surrounded by controversy, though this latest development marks one of the most serious legal challenges he has faced to date.
At this stage, Mencia has not publicly responded to the allegations, and the case is expected to move forward in court in the coming weeks.
