Lindsay Clancy Spends Her 36th Birthday in Court as Murder Trial Continues

Lindsay Clancy marked her 36th birthday in an unusual and deeply consequential way: sitting in court as prosecutors continued presenting their case over the deaths of her three children.

Plymouth, MA - July 29: Lindsay Clancy attends her murder trial at Plymouth Superior Court in Plymouth on July 29, 2026Clancy turned 36 on Tuesday, Aug. 11, during the 11th day of her murder trial in Massachusetts Superior Court. She is facing first-degree murder charges in connection with the deaths of Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and 8-month-old Callan, who were killed in the family’s Duxbury, Mass., home in January 2023.

Clancy does not dispute that she killed her children. Instead, her defense is centered on whether she should be held criminally responsible.

Her attorneys argue that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and had been overmedicated at the time of the killings. The defense maintains that her mental state prevented her from understanding the nature and consequences of her actions.

More Testimony Expected in Court

As proceedings continued on Tuesday, Clancy and the jury were expected to hear testimony from additional prosecution witnesses.

One of those witnesses was Rebecca Jollotta, a former psychiatric nurse practitioner who had treated Clancy.

The day began with arguments over another potential defense witness. Clancy’s attorneys asked the judge to allow clinical social worker Emily Thorndike to testify about the quality of care at McLean Hospital, where Clancy had spent several days in late December 2022, only weeks before the killings.

Prosecutors opposed the request.

She later posted a TikTok criticizing the psychiatric hospital, which became part of the dispute over whether she should be permitted to testify.

Judge William Sullivan did not immediately issue a final ruling. However, he indicated that he was considering having Thorndike questioned outside the presence of the jury before deciding whether her testimony would be admitted.

Defense Focuses on Clancy’s Mental State

The defense’s central argument could determine what happens to Clancy if the jury ultimately finds that she committed the killings.

According to prosecutors, Clancy intentionally strangled her three children using exercise bands and should be held responsible for premeditated murder.

Her attorneys, however, argue that her psychiatric condition and medication use left her incapable of being criminally responsible for what happened.

After the killings, Clancy jumped from a second-story window in what authorities described as an apparent suicide attempt. The fall left her paralyzed from the waist down, and she now uses a wheelchair.

The trial has already included testimony from medical professionals, first responders and members of Clancy’s family, including her former husband, Patrick Clancy.

An Unusual Birthday

Even an acquittal based on a lack of criminal responsibility would not necessarily mean Clancy would immediately return to normal life. Under the circumstances described in the case, she could instead be committed to a secure state mental health facility for an indefinite period of observation.

With the trial now entering its third week, prosecutors and the defense continue to present competing explanations for Clancy’s mental state in the weeks and months leading up to the January 2023 killings.
