Max Verstappen’s future in Formula One is heating up as whispers of a potential switch to McLaren begin to circulate. The reigning champion could be on the verge of teaming up with Lando Norris in what many are calling a dream duo for the ages, with Oscar Piastri reportedly poised to make the reverse journey to Red Bull.
Sources close to the situation reveal that preliminary discussions have already taken place, hinting at a possible move as soon as next year. While Verstappen has long been a loyal member of the Red Bull family, the team’s recent performance dip since their championship wins between 2021 and 2024 has led the four-time world champion to reconsider his options.
Despite being under contract with Red Bull until the end of 2028, Verstappen has some release clauses that could allow him to exit earlier if he chooses. His current position in the standings, sitting seventh and trailing Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli by a significant 101 points, has only added to his contemplation of the future.
Interestingly, McLaren’s interest in Verstappen isn’t entirely new. CEO Zak Brown had previously gauged the Dutch driver’s availability a couple of years ago, only to be met with a firm commitment to Red Bull. However, the tides may be turning, especially with McLaren’s recent signing of Gianpiero Lambiase, Verstappen’s trusted race engineer, who is currently on gardening leave after leaving Red Bull in April.
The connection with Lambiase could play a pivotal role in enticing Verstappen, who has always valued the support of his key team members. Meanwhile, Dr. Helmut Marko, a long-time figure in Verstappen’s career, departed Red Bull last year, further shifting the dynamics.
Amidst this backdrop, George Russell of Mercedes has expressed confidence in his position, dismissing any speculation about his future. Ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, he stated firmly, “I’ll be racing here next year,” reinforcing his commitment to the team through 2027.
As the 𝒹𝓇𝒶𝓂𝒶 unfolds in the world of F1, fans are left wondering: will Verstappen take the leap to McLaren, or will he remain steadfast with Red Bull?
