Alex Pereira is gearing up for a monumental shift in his career as he prepares to make his heavyweight debut at the highly anticipated UFC White House event. The former two-division champion has bulked up significantly, but surprisingly, he has already shed some pounds in his training journey.
Pereira had been eyeing a move to heavyweight even before his interim title fight against Ciryl Gane, which is set to take place on June 14. The timing feels serendipitous, especially as he aims to become the first fighter in UFC history to hold championships in three different weight classes. With heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall sidelined due to an eye injury, the UFC saw an opportunity to create an interim title bout featuring Pereira.
โThis feels like the right moment for me,โ Pereira shared in an interview with Paramount. โThere were times in the past when I could have moved up, but it would have felt forced. Now, itโs happening organically, and Iโm ready for this challenge.โ
Initially, Pereira bulked up to nearly the heavyweight limit of 265 pounds during his training camp. However, as he honed his focus for the upcoming fight, he found a more comfortable weight. โI expect to weigh around 242 pounds on fight night,โ he revealed. โI was heavier before, hitting about 258 pounds, but Iโve gradually cut back down.โ
In an intriguing twist, Pereira noted that his expected fight weight is reminiscent of where he began his cuts for light heavyweight. โI started at 242 pounds, dropped to 205 pounds, and now itโs a bit of a puzzle to figure it all out,โ he admitted.
Despite never missing weight in his career, Pereira has felt the strain that weight cuts can impose on an athleteโs body. Now that heโs transitioning to heavyweight, he feels a newfound sense of relief. โIโm much happier without the constant worry about weight,โ he explained. โWhen I was a middleweight, the cuts were intense. I often had to restrict my food intake significantly, which sometimes left me feeling weak.โ
With this shift to heavyweight, Pereira is excited to focus entirely on his training and strategy for the fight against Gane, free from the burdens of weight management. โItโs a huge relief for me,โ he said. โI can concentrate on what really mattersโpreparing for the fight.โ
As the fight date approaches, fans are left wondering: will Pereiraโs transition to heavyweight lead him to yet another championship title?
