Fernando Alonso just dropped a bombshell for fans waiting to hear about his F1 future—but it’s not the news anyone was hoping for. The two-time world champion is keeping everyone guessing, and he admits he’s enjoying the suspense.
The 45-year-old Spaniard showed up for his home race in Spain looking sharp in a suit and holding a special edition helmet, but he didn’t use the moment to reveal his plans. Instead, he teased that no decision on 2027 or beyond is coming anytime soon.
During Thursday’s press conference at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Alonso played it cool with a hint of mischief. “You won’t hear any news about my future or 2027 anytime soon,” he said. “Why?
Because it’s nice this way.”
So what’s he waiting for? According to the veteran driver, the big factor is the direction of F1’s new rules. The sport initially planned a 50/50 split between combustion engines and battery power for 2027, but after backlash from drivers and fans, reports now point to a shift toward 60/40 favoring combustion engines.
Alonso made it clear that understanding those regulations is key. “What am I waiting for to clarify the future? Understanding what the 2027 regulations will be and how they will impact racing and the driver,” he explained.
“The current cars aren’t the best for fun. We’ll wait, but I also have to think about the issues we’ll face next year. Then we’ll see if I’ll be behind the wheel or in another role with the team.”
It’s no secret that Aston Martin has struggled this season, sitting second last in the constructors’ standings with just three points—all earned by Alonso. Even with legendary designer Adrian Newey now on board, the team hasn’t found winning form yet.
Alonso’s career has been a wild ride: starting at Minardi, winning titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006, then moving through McLaren, Ferrari, and back again before retiring at the end of 2018. He returned in 2021 with Alpine, then joined Aston Martin in 2023 when he replaced Sebastian Vettel.
Now, at 45, Alonso is still racing, still smiling, and still keeping fans on edge. He’s not ready to walk away, but he’s also not ready to commit. So will we see him on the grid in 2027, or is a different role with Aston Martin already in the works?
