The paper is short. Its operative sentence runs, “I, Edward VIII of Great Britain, Ireland, and the British Dominions beyond the seas, King, Emperor of India, do hereby declare my irrevocable determination to renounce the throne for myself and for my descendants. ” And when he signs, he will become the first English monarch in history to voluntarily give up the crown. A job he never wanted and never trained for.

The dramatic last-minute intervention you may have seen in film versions of this moment is not in the record. And the reason for all of it, the reason an empire of some 500 million people is changing heads of state in a single day, is a 40-year-old American divorcee who is, at this moment, 600 miles away in the south of France. She begged him not to do it. And if you only know the greatest love story of the 20th century version of Wallis Simpson, you have been sold about a third of her actual life.
The king surrenders his throne for love, and the two of them sail off into a glittering, faintly tragic exile as the most romantic couple on earth. Then spent 40 years performing a great romance she could not escape because the alternative was admitting that a king had thrown away an empire for a woman who would have settled for much less. What exactly did the royal family deny her after the wedding? Good names, thin wallets.
And then the situation got worse in the most Victorian way possible. And here it helps to understand the world this child entered because it explains nearly everything that follows. Money determined where you stood once inside. Keep that in view for the next 90 years of this story because it is the thread that explains her.
But it was functionally dead long before the paperwork caught up. So, the first fortress had been a trap with a drunk inside it. She had it for about 2 and 1/2 years before the man who would demolish it walked into the room. And the people watching it happen were not at first alarmed.
And it wasn’t only later historians. “The king is entirely bonkers. ” In 1936 because by then he was her king. What Edward was proposing would demolish both because Edward wanted marriage.
The relationship the 20th century filed under greatest love story ran at its core on suicide threats made by the most powerful man in the empire against a woman whose entire life had been an engineering project against exactly this. And to understand why a king simply couldn’t marry the woman he chose, you need one short piece of machinery. Did not permit the remarriage in church of a divorced person whose former spouse was still living. Everything else was noise.
You may have heard of the most infamous piece, the so-called China Dossier. No copy of any such dossier has ever been located. Not then, not since, not in any archive. A story about a secret file of sexual crimes, this is not.
“Not give it all up for us. Don’t do this, and if you do it, the world will blame me. ” She saw the story that would be written. She does not move while the voice she knows better than anyone delivers the words that will follow her into every obituary, every film, every retelling for the next century.
Note what the speech does not do. The posture is enough. The blurred version says the royal family never gave Wallis the HRH title out of spite. On May 27th, 1937, 1 week before the wedding, the new king, George VI, issued formal letters patent.
Understand what that instrument did. While expressly withholding it from the wife of the said Duke and from any children of the marriage. Children who did not exist and never would. In precise language and supported by the Dominion governments whose entire purpose was to draw a line around Edward and leave his wife on the other side of it.
On paper before the wedding day. Edward had surrendered the title King Emperor to marry her. The one title he could not get for her was three letters long. Free at last, belonging only to each other.
We are ours now because nobody else would have them. Two people alone with each other for the rest of their lives. And the first thing the unemployed ex-king did with his freedom should permanently retire any purely romantic reading of him. That visit is fact, confirmed in contemporary German and British diplomatic reporting.
That line appears in multiple secondary accounts, but no verbatim primary transcript exists. The diplomatic record of the German trip, the couple’s documented pre-war admiration for aspects of the German regime, and the recent archival work of Andrew Lownie’s Traitor King and Alexander Larman’s The Windsors at War build a picture. Taking it from whoever offered with no treasonous design that any document proves. Both of them loathed the posting and said so.
The financial settlement between the brothers hammered out in 1937 correspondence had discussed an allowance of 25,000 pounds a year. And was then adjusted downward after George the Sixth discovered that his brother had in the negotiations substantially understated his own private fortune. No civil list, no state funds, no official status. The fortress Wallis finally lived in was gilded, luxurious, and stood entirely on the goodwill of a family that would not speak her name.
The decorating took the form of 30 years of dinner parties. Two people with no country, no function, and no project except each other. Drifting between Paris, New York, and the villas of the international rich. Their later social circle, including, tellingly, Sir Oswald and Diana Mosley, Britain’s most famous fascists, fellow exiles of a different kind.
Wallis named herself to a friend in a sentence Anne Sebba’s biography preserves, “You have no idea how hard it is to live out a great romance, not to live a great romance, to live one out, the way you live out a sentence. ”
In October 1946, during a stay at Ednam Lodge in England, jewels were stolen from the Duchess in one of the era’s most famous thefts. Both versions are baseless. A story about a royal heist squad this is not.
Andrew Lownie’s Traitor King, drawing on later interviews and memoirs, argues that Wallis was never in love with Edward at all. The heart in question left no reliable transcript. She demonstrably did not want the marriage in the form she got it, and she demonstrably honored it anyway for life. But inside the palace, the choreography of 1937 held to the end.
A widow in the palace that would not die with her, peering through the curtains of her window at the crowds below. 36 years after the letters patent the wall was still exactly where George VI had built it. She went back to Paris a widow of 75 and the money question the oldest question of her life resolved into a single exquisitely calibrated figure. Remember the £25,000 once discussed for the Duke the 1.
8 to 2 million pounds in today’s terms. The widow’s version was £5,000 voluntary revocable and carrying no recognition of royal status whatsoever. Through the 1970s arteriosclerosis then strokes then dementia then crippling arthritis. George’s Chapel, attended by Queen Elizabeth II, the Queen Mother, and other members of the family that had never once received her as one of their own.
On the instructions Blum directed, nearly all of it, including the jewels, auctioned in 1987 for roughly $45 million, the estimate, went not to any Windsor, not to any Warfield, but to the Pasteur Institute for medical research. Both edges of it. Often in the same year, sometimes in the same letter. No eulogy.
So does Maitre Suzanne Blum, because that story is somehow worse than it sounded tonight.
