The jury in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial has hit a deadlock, and as deliberations stretch into a fifth day, her attorney makes a sobering admission about her ability to face another trial. The emotional toll, he says, is already devastating.
Defense lawyer Kevin Reddington told reporters Tuesday that Clancy, a 36-year-old mother of three, is not emotionally equipped to handle a second trial if the current jury cannot reach a verdict. He described her demeanor as flat and sad during the ongoing deliberations.
The jury was sent home early Tuesday after indicating they were deadlocked, but the judge instructed them to continue. Reddington noted the process could still take time as long as the jurors are willing to keep working.
Clancy is accused of using elastic exercise bands to strangle her three children—Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months—at their Duxbury home in January 2023. She then allegedly attempted suicide by cutting her wrists and neck, taking prescription medication, and jumping from a second-floor window.
Her defense claims she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis, hearing a voice that told her to 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁 her children and herself. Prosecutors, however, allege she carefully planned the murders as part of a suicide pact.
Reddington suggested that if Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz reduced the charges from first-degree murder to second-degree murder, Clancy could opt for a trial by judge rather than jury in a potential retrial. He questioned why the prosecution is pursuing a triple homicide charge at the highest level.
Clancy’s parents and sister were seen leaving the courthouse as the case continues to grip public attention. The jury is due back Wednesday morning for the fifth day of deliberations.
