My wife used to jump into my arms every time she came home from a business trip. I thought it meant she missed me. Turns out she was celebrating the fact that I never suspected a thing. Her affair...

The message came from a stranger on Facebook. A woman named Melissa introduced herself as the wife of my wife’s coworker Matthew, and what she told me turned my stomach inside out. She claimed Rachel and Matthew were sleeping together and said she had photo evidence. I did my homework first.

I checked Melissa’s profile and confirmed she was real, then traced her husband’s identity. Matthew worked in Rachel’s department and she was his team lead. It all fit together perfectly, the business trips, the hotel stays, everything. I told Melissa I needed to see the pictures.

I had to fix a drink before I opened the attachments. There were dozens of photos, taken in hotel rooms and restaurants and cars. Most of them showed Rachel and Matthew wrapped around each other. Some were explicit enough that I felt physically sick.

That’s what I got for trusting her. Rachel came home from her trip that night and tried to jump into my arms. I turned away and she almost hit the floor. I told her I knew everything about Matthew.

She froze, tried to play dumb, then realized there was no point denying it. She said the affair was a stupid mistake that got out of hand. She said it meant nothing to her. She said she loved me and didn’t want to lose the life we’d built.

She offered therapy, offered to quit her job, even told me I could cheat on her to even things out. That last one killed whatever respect I had left for her. I told her to pack her things and get out. I left the house and drove to my best friend Zach’s place.

He listened while I dumped the whole mess on him, then told me he’d connect me with a divorce lawyer. A real shark, he said. Rachel signed the papers eventually, after weeks of calling and crying and refusing to accept it. Her performance during the divorce was pathetic.

My lawyer tore into her reputation, and she walked away with almost nothing. Melissa had contacted their company, and both Rachel and Matthew got fired. Last I heard, Matthew was crashing on some coworker’s couch. Rachel stayed with her sister for a while, but that arrangement fell apart.

Then she started texting me, talking about being soulmates and saying she regretted everything. When I didn’t bite, she asked if she could stay in my guest room. I told her to sleep on the streets for all I cared. She didn’t stop.

She called Zach and tried to turn him into a messenger. He told her off with a lot of four-letter words. Then she showed up at my front door, looking ragged and desperate, saying she had nowhere else to go. I told her Matthew might have couch space if she asked nicely, then slammed the door in her face.

She kept trying. Texts, calls, more visits. My lawyer sent her a formal warning about harassment and I haven’t heard from her since. People might think I’m heartless for leaving her out in the cold, but I don’t see it that way.

I gave her a good life, and that wasn’t enough for her. That’s not on me. I’m moving on without her, and if she reaches out again, the restraining order will be filed before she can blink.
