Beth called me while I was still at work, and the moment I heard her voice, my stomach tightened. She didn’t have my number, never called me directly, so I knew something was wrong before she even said it. She asked if Irene was around, and I told her I was at the office. She said she didn’t want to upset me while I was busy, asked me to call her back when I got off, but insisted it was important.

I hated that. I had to sit with that knot in my chest for the rest of my shift, running every possibility through my head. As soon as I clocked out, I called her back, and she thanked me before explaining what had happened. A few years ago, her son had set up a hidden camera in her apartment, just for her safety since she lived alone.
She rarely checked it, but she’d wanted to look at her fish, so she went through the footage. Her son noticed something odd, two people entering the house together. Beth figured it was me and Irene coming in together. When she put on her glasses and took a closer look, she realized it was Irene and another man.
I felt the world tilt. My mind scrambled for any excuse, maybe Irene had brought in a repairman while housesitting, but I knew that wasn’t it. Beth didn’t sound confused. She sounded disappointed.
I asked her to send me the video. I didn’t fully trust her eyesight, and part of me wanted proof, but another part of me just wanted a reason to believe it was a mistake. She said her son would send it over, and I sat in my car for ten minutes waiting for the notification. When it came, I stared at my phone for five whole minutes before I could hit play.
The footage was grainy, but clear enough. Irene walked in, watered the plants, fed the fish, and sat on the couch typing on her phone. Then she got up and let in a man I didn’t recognize. They hugged, kissed, laughed, and disappeared into Beth’s bedroom.
They came out twenty minutes later, and he walked right out. She sat on the couch fixing her hair, checked her phone camera, and left. I watched it again and again, searching for cuts or editing, but there was nothing. It was real.
And it wasn’t just one video. Beth’s son sent me five in total. Five different times she had brought that same man into that old woman’s home to sleep together behind my back. I called Beth back and thanked her for telling me.
Then I asked for the instructions for the plants and fish, told her I’d take over until I spoke to Irene. That was the longest drive home of my life. I swung between rage and sadness, cursing loudly, gripping the steering wheel until my knuckles went white. I was angry she cheated, but I was also disgusted she did it in Beth’s house, in that old woman’s bed, using her kindness as cover.
Irene got home just minutes after me. She stopped at the door the second she saw my face. She knew something was seriously wrong. She asked what happened, asked if everything was fine at work, but I didn’t answer until she got close.
Then I said, “I know about your affair. ”
She denied it immediately. I cut her off and told her about Beth’s surveillance camera. She stared at the floor for a few seconds, tears already building.
She said Beth had started forgetting things, that she was confused, that she must have seen someone else. I laughed. She was throwing her friend under the bus to save her own skin. I told her to try again, because I had the videos on my phone.
She didn’t say anything. She just collapsed into a chair and started sobbing. She kept repeating “I’m sorry, babe,” over and over until it drove me insane. I cut her off and let everything out.
I called her names I don’t like remembering, told her how shameless she was for breaking our marriage and doing it in Beth’s house. I told her how hurt Beth sounded when she called me, that Beth trusted her more than anyone, and she betrayed that too. By the time I was done, Irene was full-on ugly crying. But I knew it wasn’t real remorse.
She was crying because she got caught and was afraid of the consequences. She could barely look me in the eye. Then she asked, “What do we do now? ”
“Which ‘we’ are you talking about?
” I said. “There’s you, and there’s me. You’re leaving this apartment, and I’m filing for divorce. ”
She actually threw herself at me, begging me not to leave her.
She insisted it wasn’t a real affair, that she met the guy online and they only got together three times. She felt nothing for him. She was just bored and thought it would be exciting. I told her to stop lying.
I told her Beth sent me five videos, and I watched all of them. They didn’t look like strangers from the internet. Not that it would have made any difference. I shook her off, stood up, sent the videos to her phone, and told her to take a look at her highlight reel while I packed her stuff.
She was still sobbing when I came back with a box of her things. Her face was blotchy, her eyes red, her makeup running. She looked awful. I dumped the box at her feet and told her to go.
She looked up at me and said she didn’t want to leave. She even asked if she could crash with one of my friends instead. I pointed out she couldn’t make demands, and asked if she thought it was a good idea to live in the same building as Beth. She thought for a moment, then stood up.
She said she’d come back after a few days, that she really wanted to work through this. I closed the door behind her without a word. There was nothing to work through. I ignored every call and text she sent.
They all said the same thing: “I can do better. Give me another chance. ” It was too late for that. I got a divorce lawyer immediately.
The split was simple since we didn’t have much tying us together. We didn’t even have a joint account, something we always said we’d open but never did. When Beth got back from her son’s place, I went to see her with flowers and some groceries, both as a thank you and an apology. She did her best to refuse, but I insisted.
It turned out the poor woman blamed herself for everything. She thought her hidden camera caused the divorce, that she was somehow responsible for exposing us. I had to tell her that Irene didn’t start cheating because she was housesitting. She just used Beth’s apartment as a convenient place to meet her affair partner.
I made sure she knew I didn’t blame her, and I appreciated her coming forward. The real mess started after the divorce was final. When friends and family asked, Irene told them we grew apart. I told them the truth, that she cheated on me.
I spared them details, but I wasn’t going to cover for her. She didn’t deserve that. She didn’t like being exposed as a cheater, so she decided to fight back in the most ridiculous way possible. She called everyone we knew and told them I was lying.
She accused me of faking the video, claimed it was someone else in the footage. She implied to a few people that I was covering my own tracks, that maybe I was the one cheating. When I found out, I was pissed. I thought the truth would be enough, but she kept twisting the narrative.
I made sure to spread the truth to anyone who called to confirm, but it wasn’t enough. Then she went completely off the rails. She made a post on Facebook repeating her lies, accusing me of lying to have an excuse to divorce her and damage her reputation. I had been holding back, but I knew I had no other option.
I made my own response post. Unlike hers, it was short and factual. No ranting, no name-calling. I explained that my ex-wife had been caught cheating multiple times on camera, that the footage was provided by a trusted neighbor whose apartment she had been housesitting, and that I had five different videos of her bringing the same man into that woman’s home.
Her face was clearly visible in all of them. The post exploded. People started commenting, asking for receipts. I was hesitant to post the videos.
I knew most of the people asking were just feeding off drama, and I didn’t want to be their dancing clown. I also felt like Beth had been through enough. But I wasn’t going to let Irene get away with turning the story around. I compromised by posting crop shots that cut out most of Beth’s apartment.
It was tricky, but I managed to get a cut that clearly showed Irene’s face, and the fact that she kissed this stranger and went into the bedroom with him. It was convincing enough. The support for Irene disappeared completely. People tagged her asking why she would lie if she knew there was proof.
I wondered that myself, and I got my answer when she called me. She was freaking out, demanding to know why I posted the videos. I told her she forced my hand. Did she really expect me to sit back and watch her spread lies without defending myself?
She told me she would sue me for posting a private video. I laughed and asked whether it was her in the video or not. If it wasn’t her, then she couldn’t sue me. And honestly, she wouldn’t have much of a case either way, because it was surveillance footage.
That seemed to surprise her. She was convinced she could sue me for breaching her privacy. I told her to talk to a lawyer about it. She said she’d sue me for revenge porn.
That was funnier. I told her to speak to a lawyer, then ended the call. I never heard back from her about any lawsuit, and I don’t think I ever will. A couple of weeks later, a mutual friend told me she moved out of town to stay with family.
She needed a fresh start, which included deleting her posts and going dark on social media. I wasn’t surprised. Based on the reaction to my post, she didn’t have many friends left, and the few she still had knew she couldn’t be trusted. If she wanted to reinvent herself, she could go ahead.
The further away she did that from me, the better. Moving on from a divorce isn’t easy. I thought I’d have no problem with it, but the pain of betrayal sticks with you. I started going to the gym to deal with the negative feelings, and it’s been really helpful.
Plus, I’m starting to get back in shape, which is a nice bonus. I’ve also started visiting Beth once in a while. She’s a sweet old woman, and I try to help her with any handiwork she needs done whenever I’m around. She always tells me not to bother myself, but I can tell she enjoys having someone around.
I enjoy her company too. It helps keep my mind off things and reminds me to slow down and enjoy life once in a while. Besides, I’ll always be grateful to her for coming forward. Irene was one of the few friends she had left, and it couldn’t have been easy for her to tell me about it.
I’ll always be grateful for her honesty, and I’ll pay it back one favor at a time. She clearly thought she could get away with it and didn’t care who she hurt along the way. She used Beth’s kindness as cover for her selfish affair, and then had the nerve to blame Beth’s memory when confronted. This wasn’t a one-time mistake or a moment of weakness.
Five times caught on camera, that’s a pattern of deception, not a fling. She was living a double life, showing up to our marriage like nothing was wrong while sneaking around in her friend’s home. I did the right thing by cutting her loose fast and not wasting time on her empty promises. People like Irene don’t change.
They just find new places to lie and hurt others. If you found out your spouse was cheating and the proof came from a neighbor’s hidden camera, what would be your first move?
