I walked past the living room window and saw her standing there, frozen, staring at something in the neighbor’s yard. I didn’t know it yet, but that was the beginning of the end. I’m 42. My wife had just turned 40.

We’d been married for 11 years, and we both agreed long ago that we didn’t want kids. Right now, I’m thankful for that choice, because if I had to fight over custody, I’d be even angrier than I already am. We’ve lived in our house for six years. To our right, we had the same neighbors the entire time — a couple a little older than us, early 50s.

They eventually divorced, and the wife kept the house. I stayed on good terms with both of them. They had two kids, a son and a daughter, who mostly weren’t around because they attended boarding school. I’d only seen the son once or twice over the years, especially after the divorce, when he started spending his school vacations at his dad’s place.

Then, during his last holiday, he came to his mom’s house. That was the first time I’d seen him in a long time. Last time, he was just a regular-looking teenager. This time, he was 19 or 20, and it was obvious he’d grown into a good-looking guy.

That was just a passive observation. Nothing more. I didn’t know it was about to become the biggest problem of my life. I think my wife had seen the kid — let’s call him Shane — even less than I had.

So when she spotted him from our upstairs window for the first time in years, her reaction worried me. She tried to act calm, but I could tell she was excited. She asked who the guy in the neighbor’s yard was. I told her it was their son, Shane.

She said he didn’t look anything like she remembered. That he was grown now. I agreed, because it was factually true. But then she went on about how handsome he was.

I gave the shortest possible agreement. It makes me uncomfortable when my wife pays too much attention to other men, even celebrities. I’ve never made that mistake myself — I’m well aware of what I shouldn’t say out loud. But it never seems to work the same way when it comes from her.

The conversation ended there. A few minutes later, I went upstairs and looked outside. Shane was lounging in his backyard with his shirt off. The only reason that bothered me was knowing he was the subject of my wife’s attention.

Still, I didn’t hold it against him. He had every right to be there. She was the one acting desperate. I thought that was the end of it.

Three days later, I realized how big of a problem this was going to be. The weather was great that weekend, so I did yard work in the front. I didn’t even glance toward the backyard. But when I went upstairs and looked outside, I saw my wife lying on a blanket in the backyard in a bikini, sunbathing.

The weather was nice, so that wasn’t crazy on its own. But here’s the thing: I have never once seen my wife sunbathe anywhere that wasn’t a beach. And even then, it wasn’t something she did regularly. The last time I saw her do that was probably two years ago.

So for her to suddenly choose to sunbathe at home, my mind went straight to the obvious conclusion. She was trying to impress someone. Our yards are separated by wooden fences, about five feet high, with gaps between the boards just wide enough to see through but not to fit more than a hand through. I looked next door and saw Shane in their above-ground pool with about three of his friends.

I knew exactly what she was doing. At that point, I didn’t know how far she planned to take things. I didn’t know if she wanted to sleep with him or just get harmless attention from a younger guy. Either way, it was shameful to watch.

Why didn’t I confront her? Because I didn’t want to be the insecure husband who loses his mind over his wife showing skin, especially since I never had a problem with it before. If I went outside and ordered her inside, claiming she was trying to attract the neighbor’s son without any proof, it would have made me look unhinged. So I let it go.

But I took note. I didn’t have to wait long to get what I needed. I watched some TV, then looked out the window again. My wife was standing right beside the fence.

I could only see the top of Shane’s head from the angle, but it was clear they were talking. I opened the window slightly and tried to hear what they were saying, but I couldn’t make anything out. That image was all the proof I needed. She was out there for a specific reason.

I took a picture of it so she couldn’t deny it later. About three minutes later, she walked away from the fence with a huge smile on her face. I headed downstairs. She was coming back inside as I got there, and I was annoyed enough to jump straight into it.

I asked when she started sunbathing again. She said it was because the weather was so great. I pointed out that it had been ages since I last saw her sunbathe, and even then, she only did it at the beach. “There’s a first time for everything, I guess,” she said.

I tried to be subtle, but she clearly wasn’t getting the message. So I mentioned that I saw her talking to Shane. I wasn’t sure if it was my imagination, but I felt like she reacted slightly to that. She claimed she was just being conversational with him since it had been so long since she’d seen him.

He was 19 and getting ready for college, so he came around to visit his mom. I asked if that was the only thing they talked about. She said yes, because what else would they talk about? That’s where things ended that day.

But I had a gut feeling it wasn’t as innocent as she claimed. I’d never had a reason not to trust her before, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right. About two weeks later, I finally learned the truth. Shane had already left his mom’s house.

I was glad he was gone, because I felt like the threat was out of the picture. But I found out he’d stayed around longer than I wanted. How did I find out? In the stupidest way possible.

We were at dinner with friends. Her phone was on the table, and a notification came in from Shane. She was deep in conversation and didn’t even notice. I saw it.

She didn’t. The message itself wasn’t crazy, but the fact that she was chatting with him at all told me something was very wrong. I tried to keep my mood up for the rest of dinner, but I couldn’t. A few people noticed something was off, and I had to deflect their concern.

She didn’t notice until the car ride home. I could have confronted her then. I had so much anger built up that I wanted to let loose. But more than anything, I didn’t want her to have even a shred of deniability.

The message I saw wasn’t damning on its own. It was possible she hadn’t actually done anything, or that she didn’t even have the intention to. I needed documented proof so she couldn’t deny anything and so I’d have the upper hand if I chose to divorce her. That night, after she went to bed, I grabbed her phone.

I waited long enough to make sure she was asleep. She wasn’t careful about things, so it wasn’t hard. I opened her chat with Shane and scrolled to the very beginning. The conversation started on the same day she was sunbathing.

She had talked to him that day and gotten his number. Maybe he asked for hers, but even then, he’s 20 years younger than her, and she actually agreeing to hand it over was a massive red flag. I knew she likely asked him, because he knew me and knew she was married. The conversation started relatively tame.

She asked what he planned to study and what he wanted to become. But it was obvious when she started tilting it. She asked about his social life, whether he went to clubs and parties, how many times a week he went to the gym, and whether he had a girlfriend. Then she transitioned into the typical “girls must never leave you alone” strategy.

A few days after they started talking, she invited him over to our house for coffee. I hadn’t heard anything about that. He was smart enough to know what she was getting at. His next question was straight to the point:

“What about your husband?

From the timestamps, it took her about 15 minutes to reply. I’m sure she didn’t expect him to ask that. Her response: “There’s nothing to worry about in that regard. ”

She lied.

She told him we were in an open relationship and had been for the last seven months. I lost it right there. I had to leave the bedroom because I was so angry. That lie alone was enough for me to know I was going to divorce her, even though I hadn’t confirmed whether anything had actually happened between them yet.

I kept reading. The next day, she sent him a message asking how good it was for him. And that’s when I knew they had slept together. My wife cheated on me with a 19-year-old we watched grow up as a neighborhood kid.

What disgusted me even more was how little remorse she had. She was still texting him, asking for his review. She felt no guilt about cheating on me. And that made it hurt so much worse.

At that point, I knew it was over. And I knew I wasn’t going to feel any better unless I made her hurt the same way I did. I woke her up right then and there. She looked scared, asking why I woke her up.

I said nothing at first. Once I was sure she was awake enough to understand me, I asked what was going on between her and Shane. I told myself that if she told me the truth on the first try, I might have considered an alternative to divorce. But of course, she didn’t.

She lied and acted like she couldn’t remember who Shane was. Then when she did remember, she claimed they only texted about college and nothing more. According to her, he asked for her number because he wanted to know what to expect. I told her there was no point in lying because I had already read their entire chat from start to finish.

This time, I didn’t need to squint to see her reaction. She literally jumped up when she heard that. I told her I knew about her sleeping with him. I told her I knew about her lie that we were in an open relationship.

And I told her she had just lied to me again. At that point, I couldn’t hold back. I started throwing insults at her because the entire situation was driving me insane. She said nothing at first.

But halfway through my tirade, she started crying and apologizing. I told her it was too late for sorry, and that the divorce was going to happen whether she liked it or not. That was the first time I mentioned divorce. The crying got louder.

I had said what I needed to say, so I left her to cry by herself. It was annoying to listen to. She came downstairs once and tried to beg me, but I pushed her away harder than I intended. I didn’t mind the mistake.

I left the house for the rest of the night. In the morning, I came back and told her to start packing her things. She did. She was out of the house by that evening.

That’s where I was when I first shared my story. I had already spoken to a divorce lawyer. I just wanted everything to end as quickly as possible. But I also knew I needed to find something else to do to hurt her, because if she was going to destroy our life and make me feel this level of pain, I had to do something in return.

Months have passed since then. I’m finally a single man again. The divorce process went faster than I expected. When I gave my ex-wife the papers, she didn’t react or fight.

She cried, of course, but I expected that. I think she knew she messed up so badly that there was no point in begging. Part of me wishes she had tried, just so I could have the satisfaction of turning her down. Since we got married, my ex-wife had been heavily involved in volunteer work with NGOs.

Her financial contribution to our household was about 10% of the total. I tried to use the evidence of her cheating to avoid paying alimony, but the gap in our earnings was too large for that to work in my favor. The house we sold and split the earnings, which is what I wanted. In the end, I’m paying alimony for a little while, but it’s something I can handle.

I’m just happy to be away from her. As soon as the divorce was finalized, I messaged Shane and let him know that his and my ex-wife’s actions led to our divorce. I told him we had never been in an open relationship, and that she just wanted to sleep with him that badly. He was genuinely shocked, and he seemed distressed about it.

I told him I didn’t blame him for it, and that he didn’t need to beat himself up, but he had to know what actually happened. He said he never asked me to confirm the open relationship thing because my ex had told him that we had an agreement where we never wanted to know who the other person was sleeping with. He apologized a million times. I told him over and over that it was fine.

The only thing left for me to do was hit my ex-wife where it would hurt most. She was big into volunteer work. She had built an online community from scratch that promoted charity activities. It started in our town, but she grew it to cover almost half the state.

That was my target. I’m hurt, but I’m not a monster. I genuinely considered tearing the community apart entirely. But instead, I chose to tear away her grip on it.

I grabbed all the evidence, including Shane’s apologies, and I sent a message to her community. I wasn’t afraid to let them know it was me. I told them I was doing this because it was important for them to understand the kind of person running things. A woman who put on a mask of moral superiority while secretly cheating on her husband with a young man half her age who had only just become an adult.

I worded it in the least flattering way possible. The moderator deleted my post after about two hours. But thankfully, it had already started enough discourse. There’s nothing wrong with watching people dissect your ex-wife’s decision to cheat on you and realize how bad a person she really is.

She reached out to me, furious. Every time she sent a message or called, I ignored it. But through her messages, I could tell how angry she was. On the page, she eventually made a statement.

She admitted she made a mistake, but claimed it didn’t call for her being treated like a horrible person. She said the real horrible person was me for exposing her like that. Then she announced she was stepping down from her position and naming her replacement as head of the community. Some people might have weathered the storm of bad press, but not her.

She’s not emotionally strong enough for that. If it wasn’t a page dedicated to something good, I would have fought to tear the whole thing down. But her page does help people, and I didn’t want to ruin that. After I got my pleasure from watching her public perception decline, I blocked her everywhere.

She doesn’t know where I live now, which is great. Overall, I wish I could have done more to get back at her. But I’ll take what I got. The only thing I want people to know is this: you are never forced to be in a relationship.

If you want to leave, even in marriage, then leave. It’s never worth staying if you don’t want to.
