Heartbreak for Italian fans: Kimi Antonelli’s dream of winning his home race at Monza has been shattered before it even began. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff just dropped a cold reality check, confirming the young star will start from the back of the grid.
The 18-year-old sensation has been the talk of the season, leading the championship by a massive 59 points. He’s on track to become F1’s youngest ever world champion, and fans were buzzing about breaking a 58-year curse—no Italian driver has won at Monza since 1966.
But that hope just crashed. Antonelli is taking an FIA grid penalty for installing new power unit parts beyond his allowed limit. Mercedes chose to do it now because Monza’s long straights make overtaking easier than at other tracks.
“Our sport doesn’t reward sentiment,” Wolff said bluntly. “It’s disappointing for him and the fans, but when you make decisions for the championship, you pay a short-term price.”
The team’s goal is simple: recover as many positions as possible and grab every point they can. Wolff admitted the pressure is on, especially with McLaren winning the last two races and Ferrari closing in fast.
“The field has compressed,” he explained. “Several teams can win on merit now, and the price of a mistake is much higher.”
