The car accident was not my fault, but I still ended up paying for it in ways I never saw coming. I crashed into a stranger’s car, and when he asked if I was hurt, I lied and said I was fine. I just needed to get to my father’s office fast. He wasn’t hurt, either, just worried about his wrecked car.

I promised to pay for it. What I didn’t tell him was that I was on my way to meet my father, Howard Jones, to discuss my future. And that future was about to be sold off. When I walked into Howard’s office, he didn’t even look up from his desk.
He told me I was going to marry Leander Miller. Not my half-sister, Serena, but me, Erin, the illegitimate daughter he barely acknowledged. The Miller family was wealthy, powerful, and everyone knew Leander was a notorious playboy, a man who could end up in jail or rehab or worse. But Howard didn’t care.
He told me that if I married Leander instead of Serena, he would help get my aunt Erin out of prison. She wasn’t even a criminal, but she’d been locked up for months. I had no choice. I loved Erin more than anyone in the world.
She raised me when my own father wouldn’t. So I agreed. I would marry the devil himself if it meant saving her. The wedding was a disaster from the start.
My dress was a cheap knockoff that Serena had deliberately pinned a needle into, leaving a mark on my back. Leander showed up late, looking like he’d rather be anywhere else. He barely looked at me before telling an assistant to take me to the dressing room to find a new dress. In front of everyone, he said, “Let’s get the party started,” as if this was some kind of show.
Then, at the reception, he brought in strippers to “liven up” the party. I couldn’t believe it. This was supposed to be our wedding. I felt humiliated, but I told myself it didn’t matter.
I was only there for Erin. The worst part came later, when I overheard two guests laughing about me. They said my mother was a hooker, that being a prostitute ran in the family. They were talking about my aunt, about my family, about me.
I wanted to scream, but I swallowed it. I had a job to do. I had to keep this marriage together, at least until Erin was free
Leander wasn’t what I expected, though. Behind closed doors, he was different.
He was sharp, calculating, aware of everything around him. He caught me off guard when he asked if I crashed into his car on purpose. I told him the truth. I was Howard’s illegitimate daughter, forcedo marry him because Serena refused.
He listened without judgment. Then he said something that made my heart skip. “I can tell you weren’t lying to me earlier. That makes me happy.
”
He started protecting me in small ways. When I got fired from my design job for no real reason, he showed up at my office and convinced the boss to keep me. He knew I wanted to prove myself, but he told me, “Leander Miller’s wife shouldn’t take crap from anyone. ” He was a playboy, but he had a soft side, and he showed it to me.
}}When his brother, Nicholas, tried to run us over with a car, Leander shielded me, taking the hit himself. He told me not to worry, that it was nothing. But I saw the blood. I saw how he looked at me, like I was something precious.
I started falling for him, and that scared me more than anything
We ran away together, away from the Miller mansion and the constant threats. He showed me a side of himself no one else had ever seen. He wore sneakers instead of suits, laughed easily, cooked me food, and took me to a private pool, where he almost kissed me under the stars. He told me he had never shown his real self to anyone before me.
For the first time in my life, I felt safe. I felt loved. He said I was the best thing that had ever happened to him, and he asked me to marry him, properly, for real this time
But before I could answer, his phone rang. It was Lisa, his childhood friend, telling him Nicholas was rallying the board to push him out.
He had to leave, just for a few days, he said. He asked me to wait for him. He kissed my forehead and promised he would be back soon. I believed him.
I waited
Then Lisa showed up at our door. She said she was there to help me, but her words were knives. She told me Leander didn’t love me, that I was just a toy for him. She handed me a letter, written in Leander’s own handwriting,to his father.
It said he was blinded by lust, that he regretted marrying me, that I would never belong in his world. I read it, and my heart shattered into pieces
I was pregnant with his child. Lisa knew. She told me Leander would never acknowledge the baby, that he had been delaying Erin’s appeal on purpose, to keep me under his control.
She said I should leave him, take a deal she had arranged. She offered me a million dollars in hush money, enough to raise my child and hire a lawyer for Erin. In return, I had to leave Leander forever and never contact him again. She put a contract in front of me.
I didn’t read it. I just signed it
I left that night, taking nothing but my clothes and my broken heart. I changed my name, found a small town, and got a job at a diner. I was going to have this baby alone.
I was going to save Erin on my own. I didn’t need Leander Miller or his money or his lies. I didn’t need anyone. I told myself that over and over, until I almost believed it
Then one day, he walked into the diner.
He was with Lisa. She was hanging on his arm, laughing, calling him “honey. ” They were engaged, she said. He looked at me, and for a moment, his face went pale.
But I walked away. I couldn’t face him, not like this, not with Lisa watching, not with his child growing in my belly. I ran. I hid.
I changed my job, my address, my phone number. I told myself I was free of him forever
But I didn’t know that Lisa had been pulling the strings all along. She had forged that letter. She had paid me to leave him.
She had sabotaged Erin’s case, delayed the appeal, made sure I had no way out but her deal. She had planned everything, from the moment I married Leander, to make me disappear and take his inheritance for herself. And when I finally realized the truth, it was almost too late
Leander found me again, through the diner, through a friend of Erin’s. He confronted me in the parking lot, his eyes wild with desperation.
He asked why I had left, why I had taken the money, why I had never contacted him. I told him about Lisa, about the letter, about the deal. He listened, his face darkening with every word. He told me until I had vanished, he had been searching for me everywhere, that he never stopped loving me.
He told me he would fix everything, that he would clear Erin’s name, that we would be a family. He put his hand on my belly, where our child grew, and said, “We’re going to get through this together. ”
He kept his word. He gathered evidence against Lisa, exposing her manipulation to the board.
He got Erin out of prison with a top legal team. He defeated Nicholas in the boardroom, proving his brother had tried to run us over. He cleared my name, showing that I never took that money, that Lisa had framed me. And when it was all over, he took me back to the little house by the sea, where we had been happy before, and he asked me again.
Properly. With a ring. With tears in his eyes. He said, “I’ve loved you since the moment you crashed into my car.
I never stopped. I never will. ”
I said yes. I said yes, and I meant it.
We got married, for real this time, in a small ceremony with only Erin and a few friends. He held my hand throughevery contraction when our daughter was born. He named her Hope. And when I woke up in the morning, with her crying in the next room and him sleeping beside me, I realized this was my life now.
Not the one I was forced into, not the one I ran from, but the one I chose, the one I fought for,the one I loved. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
