“Where were you? ” Julian’s voice cut through the morning quiet of the Greenwich mansion. “I looked for you. You embarrassed me again, Vesper.

”
“I wasn’t feeling well. I took a cab home early. I slept in the guest room. ”
His eyes narrowed.
“What happened to your neck? ”
I touched the small bruise. “Nothing. Shaving accident.
”
“You haven’t shaved since yesterday morning. ”
“Stop interrogating me. You’re paranoid. ”
He leaned closer, his breath cold.
“You’re suffocating, Vesper. ”
I could still feel the ghost of that hotel room, the champagne that tasted of metal, the stranger’s hand catching my elbow. I didn’t know his name. I didn’t know he was Damon Sterling, Julian’s brother, the head of the family empire.
All I knew was that I had made a mistake. A beautiful, dangerous mistake. And I had paid for it with three hundred dollars left on a nightstand. The gala had been a blur.
Julian had abandoned me, as usual, charmless and distant. Serena Sharp, the pop star and Julian’s secret lover, had smiled at me before I felt the drugs take hold. The world tilted. I stumbled through the hotel, ending up in the wrong room.
The man was darkness and power. I thought he was a stranger, a cousin, someone who would ruin me if he knew who I was married to. So I paid him. I treated him like a service.
“$300. For the service. Keep the change. ”
He had laughed, low and dangerous.
And then he made me promise something I didn’t understand: “I want my $300 back. But not in cash. ”
Now, standing in my own kitchen, I knew I had to find the truth. I called my private investigator.
“I need Julian’s call logs, credit card statements, everything from the last six months. ”
“Trouble in paradise? ”
“I need leverage. Start the trace.
”
Thanksgiving came with a summons. Julian’s mother demanded our presence at the Hampton estate. Damon was back from Europe. “When Damon summons, we go,” Julian said, slipping on his jacket.
“It’s mandatory. Wear the ring. The sapphire one. And try to look happy.
Damon smells weakness. ”
I wore the ring. I smiled. I nodded.
And then I saw him again. Damon Sterling stood in the foyer, tall and carved from granite. His eyes found me immediately, a predator spotting his prey. “And this must be the wife.
”
Julian held out my hand. “Vesper. This is Vesper. ”
Damon’s gaze flickered.
“Shake his hand, Vesper. ”
I reached out. “I don’t shake hands,” Damon said, his voice flat. “But you owe me $300.
”
The air left the room. Julian looked between us, confused. Damon’s lips curved into a smirk. “I found this in the sheets,” he said later, holding out my diamond earring when I walked him to his car.
“You left in a hurry. ”
“I didn’t know who you were. ”
“And if you did? ”
“It was a mistake.
The champagne. I wasn’t myself. ”
He snorted. “You have a terrible poker face for a liar.
Get in. ”
I hesitated. “My husband is inside. ”
“Your husband is a coward trying to figure out how to hide a baby from me.
” His jaw tightened. “Get in. ”
I slid into the leather seat. He didn’t start the engine.
He just looked at me, dissecting me. “Why did you leave the money? ”
“To make it a transaction. Transactions are clean.
Emotions are messy. ”
“I don’t do clean, and I don’t do married women. Usually. ” He pulled out my sapphire ring, the one Julian made me wear.
“I want my $300 back. But not in cash. Divorce him, Vesper. ”
I stared at him.
“Or what? ”
“Or I will make your life very complicated. ” He tossed the ring into my lap. “Now, get out before I change my mind and take you with me.
”
That night, his assistant called. “Mr. Sterling has an item of yours in his possession, a sapphire ring. ”
“Send it over.
”
Instead, Damon’s assistant sent a contract. And a cryptic message: “Mr. Sterling has a business proposition for you. ”
I went to his office, furious and determined.
He sat behind a mahogany desk, watching me with cold amusement. “My ring. ”
“It’s a gaudy thing. Doesn’t suit you.
”
“It suits my marriage. ”
“Your marriage is a lie. And I have the proof. ” He slid a folder across the desk.
Julian’s financials. Hidden accounts, wire transfers to a condominium in SoHo, payments to a fertility clinic. “He’s moving her in,” Damon said. “Using family funds to set up a second life.
”
I felt the ground crack beneath me. “Why are you showing me this? ”
“Because I hate a bad investment. And you, Vesper, are wasting your potential on a sinking ship.
”
I reached for the ring, but he pulled it back, dangling it just out of reach. “Come and get it. ”
“You’re a child. ”
“I’m a man who wants to see how far you’ll go.
” He leaned in. “Admit it. You liked what happened at the hotel. ”
“I was drugged.
”
“The drugs wore off by three a. m. You stayed until seven. We both know what happened in those four hours.
”
I snatched the ring from his fingers. “Here is your payment. ”
“You have a violent streak. I like it.
”
The door burst open. Julian stormed in, red-faced. “Damon, we need to talk about the merger. ”
Damon’s hand pressed against my back, pushing me under the desk just before Julian saw me.
I crouched in the dark as the brothers talked, hidden, helpless. “I need a loan. Serena is sick. She’s pregnant,” Julian said.
“Ah, the pregnant pop star. How touching. ”
“Vesper’s poking around the accounts, refusing to sign anything. ”
“Is your wife becoming difficult?
”
“She’s a nuisance. Once the baby is born, I’m dumping her. She’s a doormat, Damon. She has no talent, no spine.
She’s nothing without my name. ”
The words landed like blows. I closed my eyes, breathing shallowly. “Get out, Julian,” Damon said.
“What? ”
“Get out before I decide to audit your personal accounts myself. ”
After he left, Damon pulled me out from under the desk. I was trembling.
“I’m going to destroy him. I’m going to take everything. The money, the reputation, the career. ”
“I know.
And I’ll help you. ”
I searched his face. “Why? He’s your brother.
”
“He’s a liability. And you are an interesting investment. ”
I walked to the door, then paused. “That night at the hotel meant nothing to me.
It was just a transaction. ”
“Interesting,” he said, but there was a flicker of something else in his eyes. I went home and planned. I contacted a lawyer.
I pulled together evidence of Julian’s infidelity, his hidden bank accounts, his complicity in drugging me. Then Julian came back, desperate. He crashed a screening where I was sitting in the dark. “Vesper, what are you doing here?
How did you find us? ”
I held up a separation agreement. “Sign it. ”
“You think you can just demand things?
You tracked me all the way here because you’re desperate. You want me back. ”
“I want my name off your liabilities before you crash this company. ”
He laughed.
“You have no leverage, Vesper. You’re a nobody. ”
“I know what happened at the charity gala, Julian. I have the blood work.
I know Serena drugged me. And I know you covered it up. ”
His face went pale. “Julian, she’s bluffing,” Serena hissed.
“If I release this, Serena goes to jail. You go down as an accomplice. Imagine what the board will do. ”
Julian’s jaw worked.
And then he smiled, cold and dismissive. “Fine. Get out. Take your trash and get out.
Don’t come crawling back when you’re starving. ”
“I won’t. ”
I signed the papers. Phase two began.
I needed a hit song. I had been a ghost composer for years, known only as Iris, writing the tracks that filled stadiums while I sat invisible in that cold mansion. Now I sent a new track through anonymous channels, addressed to the head of Sterling Media’s music division. “A submission just came in.
It bypassed the filter. It’s from Iris. ”
“Iris? The ghost composer?
Play it. ” Cole listened, and a slow grin spread across his face. “My God. This is it.
This is the sound. ”
“Who sent it? ”
“Anonymous email. I bet she’s some old recluse in Vienna.
”
“I bet she’s closer than you think. ”
Serena, desperate and damaged, recorded the song. I had written it in a key she couldn’t hit. It was a beautiful trap.
Her vocal cords hemorrhaged. The tour was canceled. The headlines screamed: “Serena Sharp Hospitalized. ”
I felt no pity.
She had drugged me, humiliated me, and tried to steal my life. Now she was bleeding out on the stage I had built for her. Damon called. “Your submission has been shortlisted.
The production team requires a live demonstration. ”
“A live audition? If I go, Julian and Damon will see me. My identity as Iris will be exposed.
”
“If you don’t go, you lose the contract. ”
I stared at the invitation. And then a package arrived. Julian’s ring, returned with a single line: “Challenge accepted.
”
He knew. He was betting on me. And I was done hiding. I went to the audition.
I sang. I was extraordinary. And then I was sick again, collapsing in front of Damon. “Vesper, you’re pale.
What is it? ”
“I’m sorry. I’m so embarrassed. ”
He dismissed the room.
“Pharmacy. Now. ”
In the car, I couldn’t stop apologizing. “I’m so sorry about your jacket, your car.
”
“Stop apologizing. This isn’t a mess. It’s biology. It’s not a crime.
”
He paid for the test, drove me home, had the jacket destroyed. “Money is vulgar between partners. ”
“We aren’t partners. ”
“Aren’t we?
You owe me, Vesper. ”
“I said I’d pay you back. ”
“I don’t want your money. I want a favor.
When I need it, you won’t say no. ”
He left me with that. A debt I didn’t know how to repay. Julian, predictably, tried everything to win me back.
He faked a crisis about my parents’ storage unit, an auction that didn’t exist. I saw through it. “There is no auction, is there? You just wanted to get me in the car.
”
“I had to see you. You blocked me. ”
“You’re pathetic, Julian. ” I got out and slammed the door.
Damon’s plan unfolded with surgical precision. He funded the soundtrack promotion, doubled the budget, plastered Serena’s face on every billboard in Times Square. Then he watched her crash. “The Icarus strategy,” he said.
“Fly her so high the sun melts the wax. When she falls, the whole world will hear the impact. ”
“Are you insane? Who approved this?
”
“It’s for the family image. Unless you want to admit your girlfriend is a fraud. ”
“She is a star. ”
“Then pay the bill.
”
At the Sterling Showcase, Serena took the stage. The track was flawless. But the microphone dipped, and her voice kept singing. “She’s lip-syncing!
” someone screamed. “It’s fake! ”
The crowd surged. Serena was dragged off stage, shrieking.
The hashtag #FakeSerena trended worldwide. And in the chaos, I slipped through the back entrance. Damon found me. “You did it.
”
“I’m Iris. ”
“I know. ” He grabbed my hand. “You’re mine.
My car’s around the corner. ”
But Julian’s men intercepted us. “Mr. Julian says nobody leaves.
He wants a word with his wife. ”
“She’s not his wife, and she’s not staying. ”
“We have orders. ”
Damon moved fast.
One swing, and the man’s knee shattered. He grabbed me, threw me into the car. “Are you hurt? Did they touch you?
”
“I’m fine. Damon, your hands. They’re covered in blood. ”
“I don’t care.
Get in the car, now! ”
I watched him drive, his knuckles white. And then he told me the full extent of his plan. He had short-sold Sterling Media’s stock, betting against his own brother’s company.
Every dollar it dropped, he made two. “You used me. You used my music? ”
“I leveraged an asset.
Your talent was the catalyst. Julian’s incompetence was the variable. I just did the math. ”
“Is that all my music is to you?
A lever to pull? ”
“Power is the only melody that matters in this city, Vesper. Without it, your song is just noise in a dark room. ”
I stared at him, seeing him clearly for the first time.
“You’re no better than him. You’re just a different kind of monster. ”
“I never claimed to be a hero, Vesper. I just claimed to be effective.
”
I got out of the car. I walked away. But he was watching. He was always watching.
I tried to start over. I sought investors for my own production label. They refused, terrified of the Sterling brothers. “You’re caught in a war between them.
Anyone who funds you makes an enemy of them both. ”
“So you’re afraid? ”
“I’m prudent. ”
Serena, bitter and desperate, went to the press.
“Vesper wrote the songs as a hired ghostwriter. She took the money and now she’s blackmailing me. She’s an extortionist. ”
The mob came.
Rocks through my motel window. My cards declined. I was alone, broke, and hunted. And then Damon’s assistant called.
“Mr. Sterling apologizes for the delay. He wanted to give you space, but the threat level escalated. He’s handling the digital side now.
”
I looked at my phone. The hashtag was gone. He was nuking the internet, erasing every trace of the lie. “The car’s ready.
Let’s get you home. The real home. ”
I stepped into his penthouse. He was waiting, expressionless.
“Was this you? ”
“I merely adjusted an algorithm. And threatened to acquire the hosting platform if they didn’t enforce their harassment policies. ”
I should have hated him.
But I didn’t. He laid out his terms. Three times a week. His voice was clinical, transactional.
He needed me. I had become a variable that outweighed his condition. “You mean I’m your treatment. ”
“Precisely.
Three times a week. That’s the dosage. ”
“I am not a prostitute. ”
“No.
You’re a partner. I provide the fortress, you provide the presence. ”
I agreed, but I demanded one thing: access to the Sterling archives. The raw communications logs from three years ago.
I needed the truth about my parents. He agreed. And then I saw the files. The death of my parents hadn’t been an accident.
The Sterling Group had raided their accounts the very night of the crash, gutting their company. I had married Julian to save them, signed the marriage license to buy them time. And while I said “I do,” his family’s sharks were already feasting. I confronted him.
“You killed them. ”
“I authorized the purchase, but I did not order the raid that night. That was not my hand. ” He paused.
“But I know who did. ”
The truth was a knife in my chest. And I was done being a pawn. Damon handed me the final reports and watched me read them.
His expression was unreadable. “I hate you,” I whispered. “Hate is a start. ” He stepped closer.
“But I’ve never lied to you, Vesper. And I never will. ”
I looked up at him, feeling the storm inside me settle. I didn’t know if I could trust him.
But I knew I couldn’t do this alone. “The game has changed,” I said. He smiled, slow and dangerous. “Good.
I’m ready to burn. ”
