The message lit up my phone with six photos attached. Tangled lingerie. Interlocked fingers. Wrinkled bed sheets.

A blurry reflection in the bathroom mirror. It wasn’t the first time I’d received a provocation like this. I looked at the large hand gripping another woman’s wrist. I recognized it at a glance.
It was my husband, Mark. The date on the photo was our wedding anniversary. Three months earlier, Laney had offered me a chance to disappear. I never thought I’d use it.
But after tonight, I had nothing left to stay for. I dialed a number. “Don’t be ridiculous. Once you join the closed research project, you’ll be declared missing.
All your records wiped. Are you willing to give up your family? Give up Mark? ”
I looked at the wedding photo on the wall.
The more my heart once raced, the more nauseated I felt now. “I’ve made up my mind. I’ll come fill out the forms tomorrow. ”
I hung up.
A car pulled up outside. Mark was back. He entered and headed straight to the bathroom. On his jacket was another woman’s perfume.
Nothing like me. Plain and dull. He came out in a bathrobe and lazily wrapped his arm around my waist. “Daydreaming?
Am I that handsome? ”
I sidestepped to avoid him. “What’s wrong? Are you mad?
”
I took a locked box from the drawer and handed it to him. “A gift for you. You have to guess the password to open it. ”
He tossed it onto the table and pulled me back into his arms.
“You’re the only gift I want. ”
He kissed me, but all I could think about were those photos. He took a small box from his coat and opened it. “I especially got this for you.
It’s one of a kind. Try it on. ”
I looked at the jade hair pin. A flash of an image crossed my mind.
The same hair pin pinned in another woman’s hair. “If it really is one of a kind, then I must love it. ” I closed the box. “I still have work to do tonight.
Go to sleep first. ”
I gripped the box and left without looking back. The next morning, I was already dressed. “Come here.
Give me a hug. ”
“Something urgent came up at the institute. No time to make breakfast. Handle it yourself.
” I turned to leave without a backward glance. “Stella. ”
I stopped. “Once work settles down, I’ll take you to Midstream Isle to make up for the honeymoon we missed.
”
We once promised to spend every anniversary at a new honeymoon destination. But just days ago, he had gone there with another woman. “Sure, once things settle down. ” I walked out the door, all warmth gone from my eyes.
Too bad, Mark. This time, you’ll never get that chance. As soon as I entered the office, Laney grabbed me. “You’re really here to submit the application?
What’s going on? ”
I took out my phone and handed it over. “That bastard. If it weren’t for your patents, his company wouldn’t be where it is today.
Come on, let me go tear him apart. ”
“No need. Fighting openly would be too easy for him. I want him to pay.
”
At 3:30 p. m. , I left a seminar and headed toward the parking lot. A familiar low laugh reached my ear.
I looked up and saw Mark with his arm around a woman, heading into the hotel. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him. Through the revolving door, our eyes met. She noticed me and kissed him even deeper.
I laughed coldly and turned away. The car door was held open. Mark caught up and squeezed into the back seat. “Stella, let me explain.
”
“Wipe the lipstick off your mouth first. ”
Mark instinctively touched his lips. “She’s the daughter of a board member from our partner company. She’d been drinking.
I was just seeing her back to the hotel. ”
“Is that how you secure investments by being that attentive? ”
“It’s for work. Can you not make a scene?
If you’re tired of me, just tell me. We can divorce. ”
Mark grabbed my shoulders. “Don’t ever mention divorce.
We agreed. No one gets to bring it up. ”
A phone rang. Mark glanced at it and declined.
The screen lit up again. Contact name: “Hot Baby. ” Mark replied, “On my way,” and turned off the screen. “Stella, I have something urgent.
If you can’t help, at least don’t make things harder. ” He patted my head and quickly left. I watched his back coldly. I was shopping at the mall.
Coming down the escalator, I saw a scene at the jewelry counter. Mark was warmly holding Haley’s arm, helping her try on a diamond bracelet. He took out a black card to pay. That card was mine.
I strode forward and snatched the card. “Sorry, this card is invalid. ”
“Ma’am, this is our brand’s premium card. It doesn’t go invalid.
”
I snapped the card in half and tossed it into the trash. “Is it invalid now? ”
Mark slapped me in anger. “What do you think you’re doing?
Such an embarrassment. ”
I took the slap without flinching. The next second, I delivered two hard slaps to Mark’s face. “Stella.
”
Mark rolled up his sleeves to strike back. “You hit me once, I’ll hit him twice. Want to try? ”
“Stella, if you’ve calmed down, don’t make a scene.
”
Haley threw herself into Mark’s arms, complaining in French. I suddenly spoke in fluent French. Haley’s face turned crimson. “Stella, when did you learn French?
”
“Oh, honey, you really do love me. ” I turned and walked away. Mark stopped me before I could get in my car. I shook off his hand in disgust.
“Aren’t you busy with your affair? ”
“Haley is just a friend. Why do you have to be so petty? ”
“So even if I catch you in bed together, I should close the curtains and stand guard outside?
”
“I said she’s just a friend. ”
“A friend? ” A mocking glint appeared in my eyes. “Then I’ll find one, too.
And do everything you and Haley have done. And don’t you dare be jealous about it. ”
“Okay, honey. Don’t you dare.
You’ll see. ”
I got in the car. Mark pounded on the window, but Mark caught up and held him back. I stepped on the gas and roared away.
The bar was drenched in neon lights and thick smoke. I slouched in a corner booth, already tipsy. I saw the betrayal with my own eyes. Now every bitter truth crashed into me.
A deep, smooth voice pulled me back. “Excuse me. ”
I looked up and met a pair of sharp, penetrating eyes. This man was dangerously attractive.
I’d never been very good at playing it cool. I pulled him down onto the sofa, climbed onto his lap, and played with his tie. “Want to be my one-night stand? I want to do everything with you.
”
The man just stared at me with an unreadable expression. Not even slightly tempted. I felt ridiculous. I let out a bitter smile and rested my head against his chest.
“Sorry, I drank too much. ”
The next morning, I arrived at the institute. I heard a big name was joining this project. Super rich, powerful family, still single.
“Why would I care? ”
“Once the research starts, your records will vanish. Your marriage to Mark wiped clean. Imagine walking in with someone powerful and gorgeous, letting Mark see what he lost.
”
“That’s not enough. Mark will lose much more. ”
In the meeting room, everyone took their seats. Applause erupted.
I looked up and locked eyes with the man on stage. It was him. The man from the bar last night. “Good morning, everyone.
I’m William Briggs. It’s an honor to join this project. ”
I quickly lowered my head, cheeks burning. After the meeting, I realized my period had started.
There was a stain on my white pants. I stepped out of the restroom and found William washing his hands at the sink. I froze against the wall, unable to go forward nor back. “How long are you planning to stand there, Miss Russell?
”
“You go ahead. ”
William glanced at the folder I was using to hide my pants. He took off his suit jacket and handed it to me. “Would this help?
”
I stared in shock, my face flushing deeper. “Thank you, Mr. Briggs, and sorry, this is kind of embarrassing. ”
William stepped closer, his tall frame surrounding me.
“Last night when you were pulling on my tie and inviting me to your bed, you didn’t seem this shy. ”
I flushed with irritation and embarrassment. “Mr. Briggs, I already apologized for that.
”
William chuckled softly and walked away. I returned home. Mark sat on the sofa, his expression stormy. “Why weren’t you answering my calls?
”
“Weren’t you busy charming your friend? I wouldn’t dare interrupt. ”
Mark stood and approached me. His eyes landed on the men’s coat in my hand.
“Who does that coat belong to? ”
“Why does it matter? You have your woman so I can have my man. ”
“Stella, don’t you dare say that just to provoke me.
”
“I’m being serious. Whatever you did with Haley, I’ve done with someone else, too. ”
Mark grabbed my wrist and yanked me onto the sofa, pressing me down. “Did that man kiss you?
Touch you. You’re mine. ”
The sharp clink of a belt buckle being unfastened rang in my ears. I brought my knee up sharply, landing a brutal blow.
Mark groaned and folded onto the carpet. I scrubbed my lips with a tissue and looked down at him. “Didn’t you say nothing happened? Then why are you getting so worked up?
”
The coat slipped from my grasp, landing in front of him with the tag still dangling, brand new. Mark froze, then let out a dark laugh. He got up and slid his arms around my waist. “This is all an act to make me jealous, right?
You bought a new coat and pretended it was another man’s. I know you too well. ” He buried his face against my neck. “Don’t pull something like this again.
You’re everything to me. If I lost you, I’d lose my mind. ”
I was silent for a long moment. “Do you remember the consequences of breaking that vow?
”
Mark tensed. “If you break this vow, may you be cursed with infertility, die a painful death, lose everything you love. ”
“If it means you’ll stop being angry, I’ll agree to whatever you say. ”
“Let’s go to Midstream Isle next weekend.
”
“Okay, I’ll plan everything. ”
I buried my revulsion deep down, my eyes turning to frost. That night, Mark came out of the bathroom, towel around his waist, and climbed into bed. “Stella, a friend brought back a box of ultra-thin condoms from Rascal.
Want to give them a try tonight? ”
I used to think this was love. Now I understood. When he didn’t get what he wanted, he simply turned to someone else.
“Let me freshen up first. ”
“No need. I don’t mind. ”
“I want tonight to feel special.
”
I went into the bathroom and locked the door. I turned on my camera and snapped a mirror shot of the kiss mark on my neck. I sent the photo along with the earlier bed shots to Haley. A few seconds later, Mark’s phone rang outside.
I turned on the faucet. Minutes later, Mark knocked on the bathroom door. “Stella, something urgent came up at the office. I’ve got to go.
Don’t wait up. ”
I listened as the bedroom door clicked shut. A faint ironic smile tugged at my lips. I came out of the bathroom.
The room was empty. I looked at the wedding photo on the wall. I once thought marrying Mark was the best thing that ever happened to me. Now I knew how badly I was mistaken.
I took the photo out of its frame and walked to the backyard. I found an old metal basin, placed the photo inside, doused it in gasoline, and lit a match. The flames flared up, lighting my face. Just as the photo burned halfway through, I heard the front door creak open.
I turned and saw Mark walking in. I instinctively shifted to block the basin from his view. “What are you burning? ”
“Nothing important.
Just tossing out some old junk. What brings you back? ”
“Forgot something. ” Mark went upstairs and returned moments later, his phone buzzing constantly.
“I’ve got to run. ” He left without looking back. I went upstairs and opened the bedside drawer. The box of ultra-thin condoms was gone.
I never agreed to use them, but he found someone who would. I went to William’s office to return the jacket, but the room was empty. He was in meetings all day. I borrowed a sticky note and scribbled a message: “Mr.
Briggs, the jacket you lent me was custom-made, so I bought another of equal value to return. If you’re not satisfied, feel free to contact me. ”
I hesitated briefly before adding my number. I placed the note in the shopping bag, set it on his desk, and quietly left.
I had just left the office when my phone buzzed. “Mrs. Walsh, the patent contract has expired. We’ll send someone to the villa with the new documents for you to sign.
”
For years, I let Mark use my patents without asking for a cent. He probably assumed that being married gave him ownership over everything I had. “There’s no need. I’m free today.
I’ll come to the company myself. ”
I walked into the building. The receptionist looked surprised. “Mrs.
Walsh, what brings you in today? ”
“Just here to sign a contract. Is Mark in? ”
The receptionist opened her mouth, but ultimately said nothing.
I stepped into the elevator. The doors opened. I headed toward the legal department. Mark’s assistant rushed over, trying to block my view.
I caught a glimpse inside Mark’s office. Haley was sitting on his desk, leaning close to him. They were whispering and smiling. I let out a quiet scoff and walked straight forward.
I sat on the leather sofa. “I’m done selling that patent. The contract has expired. Our partnership is over.
”
“Mrs. Walsh, is there a problem with the contract? ”
“No issues. I’ve simply found a new buyer.
”
Mark rushed in. “Stella, if you’re upset, take it out on me, but don’t mess around with the patent. Let’s talk about this at home. ”
“I’m not joking.
The deal is off. And if your company continues using my patent without permission, I’ll have my lawyer file for compensation. ”
I picked up my bag and walked out without sparing him a glance. Mark rushed after me.
“Stella, wait. Let me explain. ”
“I don’t want to know about you and Haley. ”
Haley came out of the office, saw us confronting each other, and smirked.
I let out a cold laugh and responded in fluent French. Haley’s face changed dramatically. Enraged, she charged at me to slap me. I grabbed her wrist and slapped her back, then grabbed her hair and hit her repeatedly.
Mark rushed over and shoved me hard. My head slammed into the wall. Pain exploded through my skull. “Mrs.
Walsh, are you okay? ” his assistant asked. Regret flashed in Mark’s eyes, but Haley clung to him. “Stella, go home first.
”
I gave Mark a cold look and turned away. I waited by the curb for my driver. A black car pulled up. I opened the door and got in, only to realize someone was in the back seat.
In the rearview mirror, I met a pair of deep eyes. William. “Mr. Briggs, what are you doing here?
”
“Miss Russell, shouldn’t you check the license plate before getting into a car? ”
I realized I got into the wrong car. My cheeks burned. “Sorry, I got the wrong car.
I’ll get out. ”
“Wait. ” William’s eyes landed on the coat in my hand. “I saw the jacket.
Since I gave it to you, I didn’t expect it back. Focus on your work. ”
He ordered the driver to send me home before opening the door and leaving. Laney accidentally touched my head wound.
“Did Mark do this? That bastard. ”
“It’s fine. It’ll heal in a few days.
”
My phone rang. Mark’s name appeared on the screen. Laney grabbed the phone and answered. “How dare you call her?
She doesn’t want to hear your voice. ”
“This is between me and Stella. ”
I took the phone back. “Mark, you disgust me.
You want both women. Don’t you see how shameless that is? ”
“Stella, come home. Let’s talk.
You don’t want me to cause a scene at your institute, do you? ”
I paused. “Fine, I’ll come back after work. ”
I returned home.
Mark had dinner ready. “I had the chef make your favorites. ”
I ate in silence. “Stella, it’s all for our company.
Don’t be mad. ”
“So, you still want to use my patent for free? ”
“Stella, let’s have a baby. Then you’ll always be Mrs.
Walsh. ”
I used to want a child. But now, after what he did with Haley, he still dared to talk about having a baby. “I have a headache.
Maybe another time. ”
The next day, Laney told me something urgent. “Stella, the project list changed. William is personally reviewing everyone.
”
“What? I might lose my spot. ”
“But if you win over William, wouldn’t that drive your pathetic husband crazy? ”
“I don’t have time for that.
Help me arrange a private meeting with him. ”
I returned home. Mark sat on the sofa. “Stella, you’re back.
Hungry? ”
“Looking at you ruins my appetite. ”
“Stella, didn’t you want to go to Hawaii? I’m free next month.
”
“I don’t want to go anymore. You can take Haley. ”
“I don’t like it when you talk like that. ”
“Then how do you want me to talk?
”
“Stella, there’s nothing between me and Haley. The Smith family wants her to gain experience here. I’m putting her in legal. ”
“What does that have to do with me?
”
“If you renew your patent, it’ll be her first project. If she’s happy, the Smith family will be happy. ”
“So, you want to use my patent to make Haley happy? ”
“A strong company benefits us both.
We’re married. Isn’t it normal for you to help me? ”
“This is my patent. I’m not selling.
No one can force me. ”
“Go to the office tomorrow and sign. Don’t act like a child. ”
Late at night, I was wakened by the sound of someone trying to open the door.
Mark was trying to open the door. Good thing I locked it. I checked the security footage. It really was Mark.
I got a call from the legal department. “Miss Russell. Mr. Walsh said if you don’t come to renew the contract, it’ll be considered my mistake.
I’ll lose my job. ”
“I’ll come. Don’t worry. I won’t let you lose your job.
”
I approached the legal department and heard Haley yelling inside. I smiled and walked in. “Well, look who finally showed up. Weren’t you so proud yesterday?
”
“If Mark hadn’t threatened me with innocent people, I wouldn’t be here. Just sign the contract. ”
“I won’t sign. ”
The vice head of legal tried to mediate.
“Mrs. Walsh, if something’s bothering you, let’s talk it through. ”
“The reason I’m not renewing is her. If you want my signature, tell Mark to kick her out.
”
“Who do you think you are? It’s just a patent. I’m not going anywhere. ”
I turned and left.
That night, my phone received a voice message. I pressed play. A sultry voice spilled from the speaker. I rushed to the sink and vomited.
Disgusting. I should have known he would think this low. Laney waited outside in a stunning gown. “Stella, this is your choice.
It’s too conservative. ” Laney forced me into a dark red slip dress. “Tonight is William’s childhood friend’s birthday party. Seize the opportunity.
”
Laney guided me toward William. “Mr. Briggs, this is Stella. She has some questions about the project.
” Laney gave me a light nudge. I lost my balance and landed squarely in William’s lap. Gasps echoed around the room. “Sorry.
”
“How long are you planning to sit there? ”
“I’m sorry. My dress is caught. ”
“Miss Russell, that’s quite a low move.
Is this how you earn a spot on the team? ”
“I didn’t mean to. I’ve published papers. I have patents.
I’ve done research on this project. ”
“I do see your skills. ”
William left the private box. I chased after him.
“Mr. Briggs, those were all misunderstandings. I just want a chance. ”
William stopped suddenly.
I crashed into his arm. “You threw yourself at me in front of everyone. If I put you on the team, won’t people assume I’m playing favorites? ”
“But I didn’t.
It was an accident. ”
“You’re very skilled at getting a man’s attention, but I don’t like women who offer themselves. ”
My hands curled into fists. “Mr.
Briggs, I take pride in my work. I rely on my skills. I’m not the kind of woman you’re trying to make me out to be. ”
I turned and walked away.
The next day, William’s assistant, Luca, was waiting. “Miss Russell, we’re looking for someone to assist Mr. Briggs with documents. I think you’d be great for it.
”
“Thanks, but I’d rather work with my peers. ”
That afternoon, a colleague asked me to drop off data with William. I went to find him only to realize he had already left. I raced to the institute’s exit, where every car must pass.
Moments later, William’s sleek black Bentley rolled into view. I waved from the curb. The car kept moving. I took a bold step forward and planted myself right in front of the car.
“Are you courting death? ”
“Mr. Briggs, these files need your review. ”
“Hand them over.
”
I handed over the documents, then headed back to the institute. I returned home and started clearing out items related to Mark. The ceramic cups we made together. The wishing plaque from when we watched the shooting star.
They all felt like jokes now. The front door opened. “Stella, I went to pick you up at the institute, but I missed you. ”
“I got a ride with a colleague.
”
“Stella, work has settled down. Let’s try for a baby this week. ”
“I told you I don’t want a baby right now. ”
“But you always wanted one.
”
“Mark, how are those condoms from Rascal? Did they work well? ”
Mark froze. “Stella, let me explain.
”
I went into the study and locked the door. Mark went to the kitchen to cook and make peace. He noticed the capsule coffee maker was missing. He knocked on the door.
“Stella, what happened to the coffee maker? ”
“It broke. I sent it for repairs. ”
“Stella, I really messed up.
Come down and have something to eat. ”
“Not hungry. ”
“What about that coat you bought me? I couldn’t find it in the closet.
”
“Wrong size. I returned it. I’m tired. I’m going to sleep.
”
The next day, the list came out. I rushed to the bulletin board and scanned it again and again. My name wasn’t there. I didn’t make it.
Stella, it’s okay. There will be other projects. I’m fine. I went to the break room and ran into Luca.
“Miss Russell, don’t take the list too hard. Mr. Briggs is hosting a dinner at the Voyage Hotel tonight. Maybe you should come.
”
“No need. Mr. Briggs must have his reasons. ”
I looked at flight options.
Mark would search everywhere for me once he found the divorce agreement. I needed to leave Korea. The farther, the better. Mark waited outside the institute.
“Stella, why haven’t you come home? ”
“I’ve been busy. ”
“Busy moving your things out. Half the house is empty.
”
“I needed money. I pawned them. ”
“Why didn’t you tell me? Here, take these cards.
”
“No need. I’ve sorted it out. ”
“Stella, what are you hiding from me? ”
“Nothing.
I have a business trip. I’ll be out of town for a while. ”
I turned and left. I got into a taxi and noticed Mark following.
“Driver, take me to the mall. ”
I entered a cafe and headed straight to the restroom. Mark followed and waited outside. I climbed out through the restroom window.
I found a cleaning lady. “Ma’am, dump your bucket of water on the man waiting outside the restroom. I’ll give you $500. ”
The cleaning lady looked at the money in my hand, her expression doubtful.
“That person is a stalker who has been following me all the way, and I had no choice but to resort to such drastic measures. ”
The cleaning lady hesitated for a moment, but ultimately accepted the money. I exited the mall. My phone rang.
“Stella, how much longer will you cling to Mark? ”
“Mark and I are still legally married. Who gave you the right to call me? ”
“Stella, how dare you speak to her like that?
Get to the Voyage Hotel now. ”
I entered the hotel and saw Mark’s mother and Haley sitting together. “Divorce my son right now. You can’t even give us a child.
Useless. ”
“Fine, I’ll divorce him. ”
They froze in shock. “But you need to pay me back for your beauty appointments and supplements.
My friend owns that salon. I got you a 90% discount. And those supplements? Ask Mark who’s really been paying for them.
And as for the casino, you know how many toes you’ve stepped on. He won’t be stepping foot in there again. ”
His mother’s face twisted with fury. “Stella, don’t you dare get greedy with me.
Those supplements were paid for by my son. I have my own membership for the salon. ”
“I’m just laying out the truth. Divorce is fine by me, but get Mark here in person.
If you can convince him, I won’t stand in your way. ”
Neither of them could respond. They knew Mark refused to even discuss divorce. I headed for the door.
“Stop right there. ”
I didn’t look back. “I’ve said what I needed to say. ”
I stepped into the elevator.
A man was standing inside. The man suddenly covered my mouth and nose with a cloth. I struggled, kicked the man, and bolted out when the doors opened. “Somebody help me.
”
I ran into the stairwell, but was blocked by several men. I was dragged into a hotel room. “Quit fighting. We just need a few pictures.
”
They forced me onto the bed. Hands crawled at my clothing. Cold air brushed over my skin. I began to shake uncontrollably.
“These are your props. Use them however you want. And don’t bother with condoms. ”
“Haley, this is illegal.
”
“So what? No one will know. ”
Haley pulled out a contract and forced my fingerprint onto it. “This contract is permanent.
The patent now belongs to Walsh Group free of charge. She’s all yours. Enjoy. ”
Haley left.
The men closed in. The door was kicked open. Luca stormed in with bodyguards. “Get these bastards out of here.
”
William entered the room. “Are you all right? ”
I wrapped myself in a bed sheet and said nothing. The doctor examined me.
“I need an IV to flush out the drugs. ”
“Mr. Briggs, thank you for everything, but from here on out, I’ll handle it myself. ”
William nodded and then left.
Laney saw my condition and hugged me tightly. “What happened? Who did this to you? I’ll handle them.
”
“It was Mark and Haley. ” I told Laney everything. “Don’t worry about the patent. I found another buyer for you.
”
“But Haley already took the contract. ”
“The buyer I found is trustworthy. He’ll take care of it. ”
I handed Laney a small object.
“Laney, can you help me with this? ”
The night of the gala arrived. Mark’s mother entered the hall. “Mr.
Walsh, Ty has chosen you. We won’t stand in the way. Just resolve things with your ex-wife properly. ”
I approached with a glass of champagne.
“Mark, what did I do wrong in this marriage? Why are you humiliating me? ”
“You have the nerve to ask. You were sleeping around while married.
Isn’t that reason enough? ”
“Miss Russell, I thought you refused to divorce because you loved Mark. But how could you take such vulgar pictures with other men? ”
The crowd started whispering.
“You’re accusing me of sleeping around. Do you have proof? If not, it’s slander. ”
“Someone saw it and told me.
”
“Then show us the evidence. Let’s see it. ”
Haley looked at Mark’s mother for help. “Haley, show them the proof.
Didn’t you say you saw everything? ”
Both assumed the other had the photos. “What’s wrong? Can’t find it?
That’s fine. I’ll show us something else. Evidence that reveals your affair with Mark. ”
People turned their eyes to Mark and Haley.
“Stella, wait. Please let me explain. ”
I splashed champagne in Mark’s face. “Don’t touch me.
I feel sick looking at you. This is your idea of love? Loving two people at once? Pathetic.
”
Mark stood frozen, then reached out and grabbed my arm. I winced. “You’re hurting me. ”
He immediately let go, startled, and only then noticed the bruises and marks scattered across my skin.
“Stella, what happened to you? ”
Haley’s face lit up with an idea. She declared loudly, “Stella, you keep insisting you’re innocent, but what about those bruises? Isn’t that the aftermath of your night with those men?
”
Gasps rippled through the crowd. Haley snatched the contract from Mark and held it up in front of me like a trophy. “You could barely stand straight and yet you were still begging them not to stop. You kept saying how much you liked it, and now you want to act like you’re the victim?
”
My brow furrowed. I grabbed Haley’s wrist hard. “You know what you did is a crime, right? You could go to prison for this.
”
Mark stood frozen, Haley’s words echoing in his head. Could Stella really have done something like that? But the moment he met my icy stare, reality struck him. “Haley, what did you do?
”
Haley’s body shook. She lowered her head and didn’t dare to face him. “Mark, don’t believe her. She’s accusing me because I uncovered the truth.
”
Mark’s mother stepped forward protectively, positioning herself in front of Haley. “Miss Russell, you can’t just spout lies like that. Your accusation is completely out of line. ” She turned to Mark.
“Mr. Walsh, I only agreed to work with you because of Haley’s feelings for you. But after this baseless slander against my daughter, I see no reason to continue our partnership. ”
She signaled for Haley to follow.
Haley dragged her feet, watching Mark out of the corner of her eye, hoping he’d stop her. “Wait, you haven’t said what you did to Stella. ”
Haley’s heart pounded. “Mark, I haven’t done anything.
Stella’s been ignoring you lately, right? If she’s innocent, why hasn’t she come back? ”
Mark glanced at me, suspicion clouding his gaze. He’d been swayed by Haley again.
I gave him a frosty smile, pulled a recorder from my bag, and pressed play. “This contract is permanent. The patent now belongs to Walsh Group, free of charge. She’s all yours.
Enjoy. ”
Haley’s face drained of color. Mark’s mother, standing beside him, was also stunned after hearing the recording. “What?
You actually sent people to rape Stella? Haley, our plan was just to take some photos. That was it. ”
The room exploded with shocked whispers.
Haley clenched her teeth and pointed straight at Mark’s mother. “Your mother told me to do it. She said she didn’t like Stella and wanted me to find a way to make her leave. This was all her idea.
”
Mark’s mother trembled with rage. “You’re lying. I never told you to do anything like that. ”
I stood quietly watching them tear each other apart.
Not long ago, they were pretending to be one big happy family. Now they were crumbling from the inside, and I hadn’t lifted a finger. Realizing she was losing ground, Haley suddenly switched gears. With tears in her eyes, she turned toward me.
“Miss Russell, I’m so sorry. This is all on me. I was tricked by Mark’s mom. I swear I never meant to hurt you.
Whatever compensation you want. Money, anything. Just say the word. My family will pay.
Please forgive me. ”
I let out a soft scoff. “Oh. And how much exactly were you planning to offer me?
”
Haley’s face lit up, thinking I was willing to settle. “Whatever amount you want. Just name it. My family can afford it.
”
I looked at her and smiled. “Haley, not everything in life can be solved by throwing money at it. I don’t want your money. I’m taking the evidence to the police.
Let them handle it. ”
Haley’s face fell in an instant. “Oh, and by the way, all that effort you put in, it was a waste. Your guys failed.
There are no pictures. I just walked away with a few scratches. ”
Haley was completely undone. “What?
”
Mark, standing just a few steps away, let out a long, quiet breath. He moved toward me, wanting to say something. I slapped him hard across the face. “Didn’t I tell you to stay away from me?
You make me sick. ”
Everyone around gasped in shock. “Stella, I’m not done with you yet. That patent has been under a different company for a while now.
Your people forced me into a deal I didn’t want, and they kept using my work after the deal expired. That’s illegal. ”
Mark’s face paled. “My new partners have already taken a hit because of your actions.
Even if I wanted to spare you, they won’t. So, you’d better be ready for a huge payout. ”
“Oh, come on, Stella. Who would ever dare sue Walsh Group?
That patent’s been under their name for years. Everyone in the industry knows it. No one would even go near it. You’re just trying to play the sympathy card so Mark won’t divorce you.
What do you even have to offer? I can bring him real deals, foreign investors, key partnerships. You’ve got nothing. What have you even done besides that one lucky patent?
If Mark hadn’t backed you up, you’d be out on the streets. ”
“You say my patent is worthless, yet Walsh Group’s success over the years would suggest otherwise. The patent agreements clearly outline the monthly fees owed. Take a closer look and see whether Walsh Group actually paid me.
”
Haley smiled. “You keep saying someone signed your patent deal. Then prove it. Let’s see who dares challenge the Walsh family.
Go ahead, bring it out. ”
“The contract is at the institute. I don’t have it with me. ”
Just then, a voice rang out from beyond the crowd.
“I’m the one who signed her patent. Is there an issue with that? ”
A hush fell over the gathering. Heads turned and the crowd stepped aside.
William appeared, walking in with confident strides. He walked over and stood beside me, turning to face Haley and Mark. “I’m the one who signed the contract. Does anyone here have a problem with that?
”
“And who exactly do you think you are? Saying you signed a contract doesn’t make it real. Did Stella hire you to play along? What matters is proof, not who can talk the biggest game.
”
William didn’t lose his temper. Instead, he let out an amused chuckle. “William Briggs, heir to the Briggs family in Bisset. The MU project with the Royal Family and the Hookwood Research Institute are all under my name.
Is that enough to qualify for Miss Russell’s patent? ”
Haley and Mark’s mother were stunned. Mark already knew who William was. Watching him stand beside me, jealousy burned in his eyes.
“Stella, come here. You’re still my wife. Being seen beside someone like Mr. Briggs might cause rumors.
”
“Oh, so you do remember she’s your wife. I thought the woman beside you was your true match. ”
Mark’s face flushed with embarrassment. I stepped away.
“Mark, stop the act. I was serious when I said I wanted a divorce. You betrayed me first. What did you expect?
”
“Stella, I know you’re upset today. Let’s talk when we get home. Whatever apology you want, I’ll give it to you. Just don’t make a scene.
”
I let out a cold laugh. “You think I’m being dramatic? ”
Police sirens sliced through the air. Moments later, officers walked in.
“We received a report of kidnapping and assault. Haley Smith, Mark Walsh, and Mark’s mother. Please come with us. ”
Haley grabbed her mother’s hand in panic.
“Mom, I don’t want to go. ”
The police took the three away. The gala ended in scandal. I turned to leave.
William followed. “Where are you going? ”
“Back to the research center. ”
“That’s on my way.
I’ll drop you. ”
I got into William’s car. Luca drove. The car made a sharp turn and suddenly braked hard.
My body lurched sideways and I crashed right into William. A button on my blouse popped open and my hair got caught on his belt buckle. I froze, my face burning. I wished the ground would open up and swallow me whole.
“I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to. ”
William glanced down and calmly untangled my hair. “Don’t move.
”
I scrambled back, clutching my shirt closed. “Mr. Briggs, I swear I have no improper intentions towards you whatsoever. ”
William chuckled softly.
“I’m not blind. I saw what happened. ”
“It was the turn,” I muttered under my breath. “Well, you were basically blind last time.
”
The car went silent. I took a deep breath and decided to be honest. “Mr. Briggs, I just feel like you’ve got a bit of a bias against me.
It makes things really difficult whenever you’re around. ”
William held my gaze, the corners of his mouth lifting. “When have I ever made things difficult for you? ”
I shrank back, eyes darting toward the window.
“Forget I said anything. ”
The car stopped at the dormitory entrance. I thanked William and got out. Laney was waiting for me.
“Stella, you’re all over the internet. Everyone’s talking about how Mark stole your patent. Briggs Group is taking legal action. The compensation alone might bankrupt him.
And Haley, she thought she could get away with anything just because she’s not from around here. She’s probably headed to jail. ”
I showered and lay in bed. The chaos and hurt I’d been through finally ended today.
I took my stand and won. The next day, the closed research project team departed. I watched them leave, disappointment heavy in my chest. To freshen up, I asked for a leave.
I dragged my suitcase towards the exit. “Stella, don’t go out. Mark is at the gate making a scene. ”
A strong hand gripped the handle of my suitcase and yanked it back.
It was William. “Aren’t you coming? ”
William drove me away from the institute. “Mr.
Briggs, weren’t you supposed to leave with the project team? ”
“The core project members’ names aren’t public. The list that went out was only partial. ”
I froze.
“You mean I’m on the confidential list? ”
“Yes. I’m willing to join. Have you thought about what to do with your husband?
”
I paused. “I’m done with him. I’ve signed the divorce papers. Once I’m on the project team, I’ll erase every trace of myself.
Let him think I’m dead. Let him regret it for the rest of his life. ”
The base was hidden in the mountains. I entered through the back entrance as a core team member.
There were five core members in total. None of us knew each other. Our first task was to collect biological specimens in the mountains. The team leader informed me I had a partner, men’s dormitory, room 305.
I pushed open the door and saw William in the middle of a shower, the bathroom door wide open. I turned to leave, but he’d already seen me. “What brings you here? ”
“I am your partner.
We need to collect some samples. ”
William emerged with a towel tied around his waist. I slapped both hands over my eyes. “I’ll wait for you outside.
” I bolted out of the room. William and I worked together to find specimens. No one else could find it. I suggested checking the riverbank.
“The river is far. Are you sure? ”
“We haven’t checked the river yet. It’s worth a look.
”
I found a cave by the river and discovered the specimen. “It’s here. ” I slipped. William caught me.
Nathalia stepped out from the crowd. “Mrs. Russell, you planned that fall, didn’t you? Just so William would catch you.
”
“When I fell, he was all a good 15 feet away. ”
Nathalia had no response. “Everyone, be careful. Let’s head back.
”
Everyone chatted during dinner. “I heard there’s someone at our team who had a thing with Mr. Briggs. ”
I glanced at William and found him leaving with his plate.
On the way back to my room, I saw William and Nathalia standing close together. From here, it looked like they were kissing. I quickly turned and took another path. The next morning, I arrived early for breakfast.
William saw me and sat across from me. I soon saw Nathalia enter. I grabbed my tray and chose another table. Nathalia sat across from me.
“Miss Russell, I hope you won’t cling to William. ”
“Miss Fuller, I have no interest in William. I’m here to work. If you don’t like seeing us talk, request a transfer for him.
”
“If it’s not you chasing him, are you suggesting he’s chasing you? ”
“Believe what you want. ” I then left the canteen. I lay in bed looking at my phone.
I received a message from William. “I’m in my room. Bring me something to eat. ”
I hesitated, then went to the cafeteria and brought him noodles.
I knocked on the door. William opened it in his bathrobe. I handed him the noodles and turned to leave. He grabbed my wrist.
“What’s the hurry? Stay with me. ”
I went inside and sat down. William took a hair tie from the drawer.
“Is this yours? ”
“Why do you have this? ”
“You’re so careless. ”
“That’s not for you to judge.
If I had known I would encounter you and your first love having a secret rendezvous, I would have taken a detour. ”
“What secret rendezvous? What did you see? ”
“What else?
You and Nathalia kissing. ”
“I’ve never kissed a woman. ”
I froze. “Then he only kisses men.
”
“Miss Russell, since you’re working at the institute, maybe try to stay in the loop with the outside world. Your husband seems rather restless. ”
“There’s no need for you to worry about that, Mr. Briggs.
” I grabbed the empty bowl and left. I lay in bed scrolling through my phone. The internet was full of news about Mark searching for me. He looked like a mess.
Disheveled, hollow cheeks. Watching him fall apart was strangely satisfying. Six months passed. The project was a huge success.
I sat on a plane bound for Bisset. “Have you decided what you’ll do now that you’re back? ”
“Stella died six months ago. I won’t go back to that name.
”
“If you’re interested, I could offer you a position at Briggs Group. Technical director. ”
I stared at him in surprise. “Mr.
Briggs, are you finally admitting I’m good at what I do? ”
“Let’s just say you passed. If I were you, Miss Russell, I’d have a little more self-awareness. Briggs Group doesn’t hire through backdoor connections.
”
I smiled. “You’re absolutely right. I’m not good enough. You’re the best match.
I’ll let you two bond. ” I stood and walked away. William followed me and sat beside me. “There’s an upcoming collaboration.
You’ll handle it. ”
“Is this a test? ”
“Yes. ”
The plane landed in Bisset.
William handed me a set of keys. “What’s this? ”
“Employee benefits. ”
“Do all your employees get a gift like this?
”
“You only have the right to reside there, and you’re free to find your own place if you prefer. ”
I attended a banquet representing Nebula to negotiate a partnership with Steven Harrison of Summit Rise Group. “Mr. Harrison, I’m representing Nebula.
If you give us a chance, I’m confident our first proposal will meet your expectations. If it doesn’t pass, Nebula will compensate you financially. ”
“Since you’re that confident, I’ll give you the opportunity. ”
Mark and Haley approached.
“Mr. Harrison, long time no see. This is Mark Walsh from Walsh Group. ”
Mark saw me and rushed over, grabbing my hand.
“Stella, it’s really you. I knew you weren’t dead. ”
“Sir, you’ve mistaken me for someone else. My name is Sylvia Gilbert.
”
“You are Stella. You’re my wife. ”
I pulled out my ID. “My name is Sylvia Gilbert.
I don’t know any Stella. Maybe get help for those delusions. ”
“If you’re not Stella, why are you here? You knew I’d be at this banquet.
”
“Sir, what gives you such extraordinary confidence? I’m here to discuss business with Mr. Harrison. ”
“Stella, come home.
Nebula has no stability. Come back to Walsh Group. It’s your company, too. ”
“First, I am not your wife.
Second, Nebula just beat your company in a fair bid, and you’re clinging to outdated texts. ”
“Mr. Walsh, your wife disappeared 6 months ago, but that doesn’t give you the right to claim a random woman as your spouse. That’s harassment.
”
Mark grew agitated. “Mr. Harrison, she’s not Sylvia Gilbert. She’s Stella Russell.
She stole our core technology. ”
“Mr. Harrison, she’s my wife. 6 months ago, she stole confidential documents and disappeared.
”
Steven had his analyst compare the technologies. “Miss Gilbert’s technology is entirely original. No connection to Walsh Group. ”
Mark and Haley were stunned.
He stormed out and Haley followed him. I updated William on my work. “Summit Rise Group has agreed to work with us. I promised the proposal would pass on the first round.
”
“You’ve done well. ” William handed me a black credit card. “Early payment. Buy yourself something you like.
Maybe clothes. ”
“I have plenty of clothes. ”
“You mean those washed-out outfits you wear to the lab? Now that you’re officially part of Briggs Group, you’ll be meeting clients often.
Buy yourself a few new outfits. ”
I fell silent. “Are they really that bad? Aren’t you worried I’ll drain this card dry, Mr.
Briggs? You know how much girls enjoy shopping. ”
“Relax. Your salary’s decent, and we’ll just deduct it from that if needed.
”
I shoved the card into my bag and walked out. The day of the contract signing, I walked into the Summit Rise Group building in a sharp business suit. Just as the elevator doors began to slide shut, someone pressed the button from outside. Mark and Haley stepped inside.
I shifted to the side, pretending I hadn’t seen them. The elevator ride was tense and silent. The elevator stopped on the conference room floor. I walked out.
Mark and Haley followed behind me. “Mr. Walsh, Mrs. Smith, I don’t recall setting up a meeting with either of you.
”
“Mr. Harrison, we’re here to tell you the truth. She’s not Sylvia Gilbert. She’s Stella Russell.
She stole our core technology. ”
“Mr. Harrison, she’s my wife. 6 months ago, she stole classified documents and disappeared.
”
I stood calmly watching them. “I’m not your wife. Show me your evidence. ”
“Your proposal is the evidence.
Do you dare have it compared? ”
“Why wouldn’t I dare? But if I prove I didn’t steal anything, you both owe me a public apology and stay out of my life. ”
“Deal.
You’re the thief. ”
Steven had his analysts compare the technologies. “Miss Gilbert’s technology is entirely original. No connection to Walsh Group.
”
“That’s impossible. You must have cheated. Stella, what dirty trick did you use? ”
I let out a light chuckle.
“I’m done wasting energy explaining myself. There’s always someone better out there. What’s the matter, Miss Smith? Can’t accept defeat?
Too proud to apologize? Then I’ll have to take legal action for defamation. ”
Steven’s expression turned icy. “Miss Smith, what exactly are you suggesting?
That Summit Rise is rigging results? Miss Gilbert won this deal fairly. You and Mr. Walsh, on the other hand, stormed in without invitation and created chaos.
I’d say it’s your behavior that’s out of line. ”
Haley and Mark were too stunned to respond. There was a knock at the door. “Mr.
Harrison, Mr. Samson has arrived. ”
Kevin Samson entered and scanned the room. “Mr.
Walsh, since fate has brought us together here today, I’ll give you my answer now. I won’t be pursuing the collaboration with Walsh Group. If the stars align in the future, we might revisit it, but for now, I’m out. ”
Mark’s face shifted.
“Mr. Samson. ”
Haley panicked and stepped forward. “Mr.
Samson, don’t let her fool you. We were supposed to collaborate. Remember, you promised my family. She’s a fraud.
Even her name’s not real. ”
I looked at her coldly. “Miss Smith, what exactly is your connection to Mr. Walsh?
Why are you so invested in his problems? ”
“Mark and I are together. I’m his girlfriend. Of course, his business is mine, too.
”
I turned to Mark with a look of mock surprise. “Oh, so it’s official now. ”
Mark shot a sharp glare at Haley, his displeasure obvious. Haley’s confidence faltered.
I let out a soft, mocking laugh. “I had no idea you two were a couple. But didn’t you just tell me at the party a few days ago that your heart belonged to your wife, Mr. Walsh?
And now, suddenly, you’ve fallen for someone else. That was quick. From the looks of it, this doesn’t seem like a relationship. It seems more like an affair.
I don’t know this Stella, but I feel bad for her. You two seem like a perfect match. Both equally shameless. ”
Mark’s face twisted, but then something flickered behind his eyes.
“Stella, you’re jealous. You still care about me. Why else would you say all that? ”
Steven had had enough.
“Mr. Walsh, Miss Gilbert isn’t anyone’s substitute. Your wife deserves better than a man who two-timed her. Walsh Group and Summit Rise Group have no partnership now, and I can’t see that changing.
It’s time for you to go. ”
Mark looked at me one last time. “Stella. ”
I didn’t even glance in his direction.
Mark shoved the door open and walked out. Haley followed.
