The only reason I found out was her smartwatch. I’m 35, I’ve been married to Ava for seven years, and we have two kids—five and three. I built everything I have from nothing, and the last piece of that life was my family. I thought I had it.

I thought I was living my dream. Then I found out what she was doing behind my back. You’d think something like that would take months of detective work. For me, it took one Friday afternoon and a birthday gift I bought her two years ago.

Ava wanted to get serious about her fitness, so I bought her a smartwatch. I’m the tech person in the house; she doesn’t care about updates or settings. So I’m always the one syncing her devices and installing new versions. That day, I was doing exactly that with her smartwatch.

While I had it in my hands, I got curious. She’d been telling me she was sticking to her workouts, losing the baby weight, getting back into shape. I wanted to check her accountability. I opened the workout log.

There it was. A workout logged on Tuesday. Tuesday she had told me she was on a night shift at the pharmacy. The route was strange.

She’s a walker, a jogger. She never goes to the gym alone, and that Tuesday she wasn’t at the gym either. I checked the map attached to the workout. The GPS had been active, showing her moving around a residential area.

It was three miles from her work and caught the activity at 2:00 a. m. She wasn’t at work. I pulled out my phone and searched the address on Google Maps.

Just a regular neighborhood. I didn’t feel good, but I wasn’t ready to believe the logical explanation yet. Still, I had to know more. So I used the same excuse she always accepts: I need to update your phone.

She didn’t question it. Why would she? I just did her smartwatch. But I didn’t go to settings.

I opened Google Maps and its location history. The phone showed me everything. On Tuesday, she never stepped foot into the pharmacy. She went to a restaurant.

And two hours later, she went to that house. She stayed there all night and only came home in the morning. When I used street view, I saw it was just an ordinary house. No pharmacy running out of it.

No reason for her to be there. I had enough for a divorce. But I wanted to know who it was and why. Her messages didn’t take long to find.

A contact named Kyle. I scrolled through them, and I hated what I saw. They weren’t hiding anything. The messages were explicit, affectionate, and completely shameless.

It felt like they weren’t doing anything wrong. I read them all. I screenshotted all of it. And I swore to myself I wouldn’t let the anger fade, because I was going to have to do something I never thought I’d have to do.

We have kids. I wanted the best for them, I still do. But I can’t fake a marriage with a woman who did this. I can’t wait years until the kids are grown.

The hate would show before six months. I know I did my job as a husband and father. She’s the one who broke us. I decided to confront her, but I wasn’t going to do it the simple way.

I wanted her to hurt the way I hurt. We’ve done family photo shoots before. I told her I booked another one in a few weeks. She was happy.

She had no idea what I had planned. I found a photographer whose camera could also record video. I asked them to keep recording no matter what happened. When the day came, I told Ava I had a new idea.

Usually, we do studio shoots. But I said I wanted to try something different, a nice street with a candid vibe. Maybe a garden location too. She didn’t suspect a thing.

We got in the car and drove to the spot I chose. I knew she’d recognize the area immediately because it was Kyle’s street. She tried to be sly about it, but she kept looking out the window toward his house. I parked right in front of it.

“Let’s get out,” I said. “I don’t like this location,” she said quickly. “Why? ”

“It’s ugly.

“Let’s at least try some angles. ”

She said she’d try the residential photos but wanted to find a better spot. I dismissed her and got out with the kids. She stayed in the car.

Five minutes. A solid five minutes, refusing to step out. I knew exactly why. She was terrified of being seen in front of her affair partner’s house by the wrong person.

And from what I read, Kyle didn’t know she was married. If he came out and saw her, she’d have two people wanting her head. Finally, she got out, begging under her breath that we make it quick. She was antsy the whole time.

She kept shushing the kids, snapping at the photographer, looking over her shoulder. At one point, she scolded them too harshly, and I had to step in. I told her to calm down. She said the noise was annoying, that we were causing a racket in an unfamiliar neighborhood.

They were just kids playing. She was irritable for a different reason. Then, luck was on my side. Kyle’s front door opened.

Ava saw him immediately. She told me she was feeling sick and went back to the car. Kyle came over. He introduced himself and asked if we could keep the noise down.

He was an okay guy, and I hated that, because I needed to hate him. “I appreciate that,” I said. “My wife is actually very worried about disturbing the neighbors. That’s why she went back to the car.

Could you tell her it’s fine? She won’t believe me. ”

He agreed and walked toward the car. I told the photographer it was time to record.

She nodded. I watched as Kyle reached the car door, looked in, and jumped back. “Ava? ” I heard him say.

I didn’t hear her response. But I saw him look back at me, then at her, confused. He heard the word husband. He got angry.

He asked her to explain or she’d lose him right there. Then he walked back to me, furious. “Who are you? ” he spat.

“I’m her husband,” I said. “Who are you? ”

“I’m her boyfriend. ”

That stopped me cold.

I assumed this was an affair, not a relationship. “We’ve been dating for about three months,” he said. Three months. She’d deleted the messages from earlier.

I explained the situation calmly. I told him that I understood his confusion, but that Ava was my wife and those were our kids. I wasn’t claiming her anymore, though. If he wanted to be with her after the lies she told him, that was his business.

He grabbed his hair and pulled. He looked destroyed, and I actually felt a little bad for him. But he’s still the reason my marriage is ending. I won’t be sending him a gift basket.

We went home. The photographer had recorded everything, and I paid them and sent them off. Ava didn’t say a word until the kids were in bed. Then she approached me, already in tears.

“I can explain,” she said. “Then explain. ”

She told me Kyle was just a friend who liked her too much. That he was insistent, and she didn’t want to cut him off entirely.

It was obviously a lie. I’d seen how she panicked the second she recognized the house. “Have you been to his house? ” I asked.

She paused. “Did you spend your night shifts at his place instead of work? ”

She shook. She tried to deny it, but when I pushed, she stopped denying it.

“What did he have that I didn’t give you? ” I asked. She said there wasn’t one. It was just a moment of weakness.

A three-month moment of weakness. I didn’t get a better answer. The kids were asleep, so I couldn’t scream. I left the house and slept in my car.

She called a million times. I didn’t answer. The next morning, I went to a divorce lawyer. She was served within days.

The divorce was finalized not too long ago. It’s over. I don’t like being divorced. But I didn’t have a choice.

She cheated, and I won’t compromise on that. We share custody of the kids. The house went to her. She’s getting alimony and child support.

I took my cut of the house value, otherwise, she would have taken everything. As one last gesture, I released the video from the photo shoot. It won’t cost her job or get her shunned, but it embarrassed her. Her mom and a friend called me to ask what happened, so I know it got around.

I don’t have regrets. I did everything I could to make the marriage work. Some people will say the photo shoot was too much.

But after three months of deception, I needed the truth to blow up in real time.
