The lobby doors swung open, and Jiu Han walked in, trailed only by his driver. Bruno, the resort manager, nearly choked on his own breath behind the front counter. “He’s here,” Bruno whispered to the receptionists, already sweating. “Where’s the translator?

” No one answered. One of them glanced at the clock. “He’s not here yet, sir. ”
Bruno went pale.
“What do you mean, not here yet? That man doesn’t speak English. Do I need to draw pictures for you people? ”
Jiu reached the counter and said something in Korean, his expression serious.
The staff froze. Bruno fumbled with a translation app, but the robotic voice made no sense. Jiu frowned and repeated himself, louder this time. Maya was pushing her cleaning cart through the lobby when she saw the panic.
Everyone was scrambling, but she understood Jiu perfectly. He was asking for coffee. Without overthinking it, she walked to the machine in the corner, made a cup, and added a pinch of cinnamon and a little honey. Then she approached Jiu and said in Korean, “Good morning, sir.
I brought you your coffee. I took the liberty of adding a bit of cinnamon and honey to sweeten your day. ”
The entire lobby went silent. Jiu stared at her, then took the cup with both hands, sipped, and exhaled.
“You speak my language? ” he asked. “I understood you were asking for coffee. ”
Bruno rushed over.
“Maya, since when do you speak Korean? ”
“I studied on my own. Watching dramas. ”
Jiu let out a small laugh, something no one had expected.
He looked at Bruno, then back to Maya. “I want her to come with me and be my interpreter. ”
Bruno blinked. “What did he say?
”
“He wants me to go with him,” Maya said, stunned. Jiu was already heading for the elevator. He motioned for her to follow, and before she could think, she left her cart behind. As the doors closed, he said something that made her eyes widen: “And I want to have coffee with you every day while I’m here.
”
Inside the presidential suite, Maya stood in her worn uniform, feeling completely out of place. “I can’t accept this. I’m just a cleaning lady. ”
“You speak my language better than anyone here,” Jiu said.
“And you were the only one who cared enough to understand me. That’s more valuable than any degree. ”
“And if I mess up? ”
“Then you tell me, and we fix it.
”
She agreed, on one condition: he had to be honest with her, no polite cover-ups. He smiled. “Deal. ”
The next morning, a business outfit and new shoes were delivered to her apartment, along with a badge that read “International Communications Assistant.
” When she walked into the lobby, Bruno almost spilled his coffee. For two hours, Jiu asked her questions about the resort. She told him the truth, even when it was uncomfortable: that the work environment had a strict hierarchy, that housekeeping rarely got promoted, and that things often felt rushed, especially when deals were being closed. “Interesting,” Jiu said, making notes.
“You’re very observant. ”
“When you clean places, you see things others don’t. ”
Later, as she headed toward Bruno’s office, she heard voices through a slightly open door. Bruno was speaking with Roberto, the financial manager.
“We need to get the Korean to sign fast, without digging too much,” Bruno said. “But what if he finds out about the irregularities? ”
“He won’t. That’s why I hired the interpreter,” Bruno replied.
Then his voice dropped. “We’ll have to take care of Maya too. ”
Maya backed away, her heart pounding. She needed to warn Jiu, but he was constantly surrounded by his business partners.
When they finally had lunch together at the resort’s restaurant, she knew she should tell him. But before she could, she knocked over her juice glass, splashing red liquid across his jacket. The whole restaurant turned to look. Maya was mortified, but Jiu only laughed.
“You’re the most genuine person I’ve met in years. ”
Then the supposedly official interpreter arrived: Carlos Mendoza. His Korean was shaky, and Maya immediately noticed he was mistranslating everything, telling Jiu things he had never said. “Mr.
Han is ready to sign now,” Carlos announced. “That’s not what he said,” Maya interrupted. In the meeting, Carlos twisted Jiu’s words, claiming Jiu was eager to sign immediately. Maya finally exposed the lie.
Jiu’s expression darkened. “Tell Bruno I will not do business with people who use dishonest translators,” Jiu said through Maya. “I’ll not sign anything until my own team reviews everything. ”
Bruno went pale.
Afterward, alone with Maya, Jiu asked her to help him uncover the truth. “You noticed things others didn’t. I need your eyes. ”
She told him what she had overheard.
He nodded, not surprised. “I need you to find the real documents. ”
Maya agreed. That afternoon, she used her cleaning key to enter Bruno’s office.
She found a loose panel in the back wall, and behind it, a hidden compartment. Inside: alternate contracts, real financial reports showing the resort losing money for months, and worst of all, a contract with Jiu’s forged signature, ready to move millions to an offshore account. She photographed everything. As she stepped out, Roberto nearly caught her.
She claimed she was cleaning, but she could feel his suspicion. The next morning, Jiu was busy with other investors. Maya went back to Bruno’s office for more evidence. This time, Roberto caught her.
Bruno arrived, furious. “You’re fired,” Bruno said, calling security. Jiu appeared, drawn by the commotion. He demanded to know what was happening.
Maya looked at him, desperate. “They’re trying to deceive you, Jiu. I have proof on my phone. ”
Bruno tried to argue, but Jiu’s voice cut through.
“She stays. ”
In the office, Maya showed him the photos. Jiu’s face grew darker with each image. He turned to Bruno.
“Tell him he has 24 hours to prepare the real documents, or I’ll involve both Mexican and Korean authorities. ”
Bruno left broken, and Maya knew she had made a dangerous enemy. That evening, Jiu invited her to dinner in his suite. The table was set with candles and flowers.
They talked for hours, about his grandmother who raised him, about her mother who worked double shifts, about their dreams. On the balcony, under the stars, he touched her face and leaned in. But Maya pulled back. “I can’t.
You’re a billionaire. I’m a cleaning lady. In a week, you’ll be gone. ”
She left, crying all the way home.
The next morning, she kept him at a distance. Cold, professional. He tried to reach her, but she closed herself off. Finally, he asked, “Why are you shutting me out?
”
“Because I have to protect my heart,” she admitted, and agreed to be his friend, though they both knew it was more. Meanwhile, Bruno was plotting revenge. He planted cash in Maya’s bag and called security. He accused her of stealing.
Jiu appeared, took her hand, and said in front of everyone, “She’s under my personal protection. She’s the most honest person I’ve met. ”
He believed her. The crowd dispersed, and Maya felt a surge of gratitude.
Days later, in a board meeting, Maya presented all the evidence of the fraud. Bruno was suspended, but as he stormed out, he glared at Maya. “You’ll regret this. ”
With Jiu, she finally told him the truth about her father: a Korean man who had left her mother when she was pregnant.
He never knew his name. “That’s why I learned the language,” she said. “It felt like a way to connect with a part of me I’ve never known. ”
Jiu was silent, then said, “When this is over, I want to take you to Seoul with me.
”
Maya was stunned. A few nights later, he kissed her in the garden under the stars. For the first time, she let herself dream of a future with him. But Bruno wasn’t finished.
He broke into Jiu’s suite, stole confidential documents, and planted Maya’s hair and her pen. The next morning, Jiu confronted her with the evidence. Maya felt her world collapse. “After everything I’ve done for you, you trust a piece of hair over my word?
”
He didn’t respond. She resigned and disappeared. Days later, Jiu found security footage showing Bruno entering the suite, planting the evidence. He spent two days searching for Maya.
He found her working at a small roadside café. “Maya, I was wrong,” he said. “I have the footage. ”
She wouldn’t forgive him so easily.
“Trust doesn’t get rebuilt with speeches. ”
He left heartbroken, telling her he loved her anyway. A week later, he returned with reporters and resort staff. In front of everyone, he knelt and made a public apology.
“Maya Lopez is the most honest, brave, and honorable woman I’ve ever met. ” He offered her a position as director of international communications. “I made the biggest mistake of my life by doubting you. ”
She accepted, but kept her distance.
Three months later, he asked her for dinner. “Not as co-workers. As two people who want to start over. ” She hesitated, then agreed.
He took her to a private beach on the resort, transformed with fairy lights and flower petals. “Will you be my girlfriend? ” he asked. “Yes,” she said without hesitation.
Six months later, she stepped off a plane in Seoul, holding his hand. He showed her palaces, markets, and food so spicy it made her cry. She fell in love with the country her father came from. Then, during cherry blossom season, he knelt among the falling petals and opened a small box.
“Maya Lopez, will you marry me? ”
A child handed her a handful of petals. “For the pretty bride. ”
She knelt, thanked the girl in perfect Korean, and turned back to Jiu.
“Yes. A thousand times, yes. ”
As she slipped into his arms, she realized that the coffee she once gave a stranger had turned into something neither of them had ever dared to imagine.
