I’m 35, and my wife Clara is 33. We’d been married for seven years, and we have a daughter together. I always believed we were happy. It turns out I was just blind.

Things changed after our daughter was born. The closeness between me and Clara faded. Intimacy became a once-a-month event, and I just accepted it as something many men go through. Then I found out she was pregnant from a pregnancy test I pulled out of the trash.
She tried to bury it, but I saw it sticking out. We planned to have only one child. Even if a second one came as a surprise, I should have been the first to know. The fact that she hid it from me told me everything I needed to know: that baby was very unlikely to be mine.
The last time we slept together, her period came two days later. There was no way I was in her fertile window. I didn’t want to ask her, because I knew she would just lie. So I waited until she was asleep, took her phone from its charger, and started reading her messages.
It didn’t take long to find the answer. There’s a guy she works with named Antonio. People at her office called him her work husband, and she had told me that casually, like it was nothing. I hated that term, and I hated that she thought it was okay to say it out loud to me, her actual husband.
When I read their messages, I saw the whole story unfold. They started as friends, then flirtatious, then sexual. They talked about the buildup, how good it was when they finally crossed the line. He has a girlfriend, too.
Neither of them cared. I sat there in stunned silence, looking at her sleeping next to me. I felt something dark and heavy inside me. I wanted to break something.
I wanted to hurt Antonio first of all. But after a few hours of thinking, I realized I couldn’t throw my life away because she betrayed me. I needed a plan instead. So I set my escape plan carefully.
I have a daughter to protect, and I refuse to let strange men be brought around her. I couldn’t trust Clara to make the right choices as a single parent when she was already making senseless ones behind my back. I met with a divorce lawyer. I paid him, and the process started.
Before serving the papers, I confronted Clara. She had just put our daughter to sleep when I walked in. I didn’t waste time. I told her I knew about Antonio.
She gasped and tried to deny it. Then I told her I knew she was pregnant, that I knew it was his. She tried to deny it again, weakly. I told her not to lie to me.
I’m usually calm, so when I said I was close to snapping, I could see she was scared. She finally confessed. She claimed the “work husband” thing wasn’t her idea, that coworkers started it. She said they were friends before that, and it was harder than I thought to break away.
She told me she knew it was wrong. I asked her why friends flirt so heavily with each other. She had no answer. I told her we were getting divorced because of her actions.
Then I asked what happened to the pregnancy. She said nothing. She had hidden the test because she planned to get rid of the evidence, and the pregnancy itself. That’s when she flipped.
She told me the only reason she had cheated was because I had been neglecting her at home. If I hadn’t been so distant, she wouldn’t have needed comfort from someone else. That was the first time I’d heard that in seven years. She had never once told me she felt neglected.
I didn’t argue. I just told her the papers would be arriving soon, and I walked out. I went through Clara’s followers and found Antonio’s Instagram, then found his girlfriend. I sent her every screenshot I had between her man and Clara, and said nothing.
She opened the messages but didn’t respond for a long time. The divorce went better than I expected. My lawyer used her affair, her decision to terminate the pregnancy, and other unsavory choices as the basis for everything. She got alimony, which my lawyer said was a concession.
But I got the house, and I got majority custody of our daughter: 70/30. She was upset, but that only made me happier. She didn’t deserve a good exit from our marriage. After the divorce, I made sure everyone knew the truth.
All her friends and family liked me, and they always praised the things I did for her. So when I sent out a message explaining what had happened, they were shocked, and many were angry at her for lying about me neglecting her. Her brother called her. Her cousin called her.
A friend called her. Clara herself called me to say at least seven people had scolded her and she was humiliated. She asked me why I didn’t think I had neglected her. I told her it never happened.
She started crying. She said she just didn’t feel loved enough. I told her she only felt that way now because she needed an excuse to justify her horrible behavior. She had never once complained about that while we were married.
She even acknowledged that herself. She said she was very sorry. She wanted to know if I would ever consider us getting back together. I told her no.
I couldn’t trust her again. Not after that. She cried more, then said a quiet okay. I don’t have pity for her.
If she had a one-night stand, I probably wouldn’t forgive that either. But this was a full affair that was still going on when I found out. And she got pregnant for him. There was no coming back from that.
She has our daughter for about a third of the year. She doesn’t have me anymore. That’s her fault. One last thing: Antonio’s girlfriend eventually reached out.
She told me she was initially mad because I ruined what she thought was a good life. But after time, she realized it was better to know the truth, no matter how painful. She thanked me, then said she was blocking me. I suppose that’s all over now.
Her family keeps telling people I was a model husband who was hurt by the system, and I look like the one who was wronged. Clara is left humiliated, divorced, and mostly without her daughter. All because she chose to have a work husband.
