I was only forty minutes from my flight to Mexico, just a few hours from the start of my wedding plans with the man I loved. I was grabbing the last things for our trip when my phone died, and I...

I got off work later than planned, and I was absolutely starving. Ricky, my boyfriend, had already texted me that he was at my apartment waiting, and that he was going to grab us dinner from the food truck down the street. I remember thinking how lucky I was to have met him. We had so many plans.

Our flights to Mexico were booked for the next morning. Then I stopped answering my phone. It wasn’t long before the parking garage of my complex was swarming with police. I knew nothing about it.

I was just wondering why Ricky wasn’t answering his phone, and why the paths I took were so quiet. The confusion was the last normal feeling I had before the world fell away. The police later told my family they found me next to my car, shot in the back of the head. They thought it was a robbery at first.

My purse was gone. They didn’t realize the truth for a long time. She had been watching him for years. She had access to his location, his messages, everything.

When she saw our vacation plans and the life we were building, she couldn’t let it go. She was his ex, and she paid someone a few hundred dollars to make sure I never got on that plane. The investigators were stunned by the coldness of it all. I was just an obstacle in her mind.

I never got to see Mexico. I never got to become a wife or a mother. I was thirty-five years old, and I loved children more than anything. I dedicated my entire adult life to taking care of them, sometimes for free, just to make sure they were healthy.

In the end, they were all caught. The woman who orchestrated everything was sentenced to life in prison, and the people who pulled the trigger for a few hundred dollars received their own severe sentences. They said she didn’t show a single ounce of remorse.

It’s hard to believe that someone’s love could become so twisted that they would choose to destroy an innocent life, and everyone who loved her, just to try and win back a man.
