Joy-Anna Duggar and her sister Jinger Duggar just posted a playful video that looks completely harmless by most standards — but for anyone familiar with the strict rules they grew up under, the clip represents something much bigger.
The sisters filmed themselves dancing together while wearing hoodies backward, pulling the hoods over their faces and moving to a mashup of Michael Jackson songs. Joy captioned the video, “Proof we’ve spent way too much time together.”
The sisters were clearly joking around and trying to see whether they would dance similarly without being able to watch each other.
But there was one obvious problem for longtime Duggar watchers: dancing was once strictly forbidden in their family.
For Joy and Jinger, who grew up under Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar’s highly conservative household rules, even something as ordinary as dancing could be considered inappropriate. The family’s approach to music, clothing and behavior was heavily influenced by their religious beliefs, and dancing was specifically treated as something the children should avoid.
That makes the sisters’ latest video particularly ironic.
At one point, Joy even shakes her hips toward the camera, turning what would normally be an innocent social media moment into something that Duggar critics immediately viewed as a tiny act of rebellion against the rules of their childhood.
And the internet noticed.
After the video circulated online, critics mocked the sisters’ awkward dance moves, with some joking that their lack of coordination was evidence of just how little exposure they had to dancing growing up.
One commenter described it as some of the most awkward dancing they had ever seen, while another suggested that the sisters appeared to have missed out on learning how to dance because of the restrictions placed on them as children.
Others compared the video to something they might have expected from kids at a sleepover rather than two grown women confidently posting a dance clip online.
But beneath the jokes is a much more interesting question: Why was dancing such a serious issue in the Duggar household in the first place?
Longtime viewers of 19 Kids and Counting may remember that the family openly discussed its ban on dancing.
In one episode, one of the younger Duggar children began moving to music while inside a store. Rather than encouraging the child to dance, an older sibling stopped the music. Jana Duggar explained that while “jumping for joy” was acceptable, dancing itself was not.
Jim Bob also explained that the family was careful about the music allowed inside their home because he believed children naturally began moving when they heard certain songs.
Michelle Duggar went even further, explaining that the family believed dancing could stir up sensual feelings that they did not want their children to experience.
That context makes Joy and Jinger’s latest Instagram appearance look very different.
What might seem like a silly few seconds of sisters dancing is, for people who followed the Duggar family for years, almost the complete opposite of what they were taught growing up.
And perhaps that is exactly why the video has attracted so much attention.
Joy and Jinger are now adults, married and raising families of their own. They have increasingly shown glimpses of lives that look very different from the highly controlled environment portrayed during their childhood years on television.
Jinger, in particular, has spoken openly about reevaluating parts of her upbringing, while Joy has also become more candid about adulthood, marriage, friendships and the challenges of growing up in such a large and highly structured family.
So maybe this video isn’t really about dancing at all.
Maybe it’s about two sisters who were once told not to do something now laughing together while doing exactly that — completely on their own terms.
And judging from the reaction online, people definitely noticed the irony.
For a family where dancing was once considered completely off-limits, Joy and Jinger shaking their hips for the camera is quite a change.
