The alleged University of Idaho killer reportedly tried to stay one step ahead of investigators in a bizarre way. Bryan Kohberger is said to have sneaked out in the early morning hours to dump his family’s trash into neighbors’ bins, hoping to keep his DNA off the radar.
According to court documents and a law enforcement source, the 28-year-old criminal justice Ph. D student appeared to be on high alert after the November 13 stabbings. Surveillance reportedly caught him placing garbage from his parents’ Pennsylvania home into nearby cans around 4 a.

The move came as authorities were already closing in. The probable cause affidavit revealed that investigators had collected DNA from the family’s trash on December 27, matching it to Kohberger’s father with over 99% certainty. That evidence linked the knife sheath found at the crime scene to the suspect.
Kohberger was taken into custody on December 30 at his parents’ house in Albrightsville, ending a tense seven-week search. He now faces four counts of murder in the deaths of Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20.
