The jungles of Vietnam in 1971 became a proving ground for a weapon that would haunt American soldiers for decades, a Soviet-designed rifle that outclassed everything the United States could field at the time. Yet their equipment lagged behind their expertise, relying on the bolt-action Mosin-Nagant with its modest 3.

No rifle in existence met these requirements, but Yevgeny Dragunov, a World War II veteran who had spent the war repairing weapons and understanding how soldiers actually used them in battle, rose to the challenge. Dragunov had designed competition target rifles and was himself a skilled shooter, giving him an intimate understanding of precision and practicality. His prototype stood apart from competitors, and when the legendary Stalingrad sniper Vasily Zaitsev tested the designs, Dragunov’s rifle emerged victorious.
The SVD entered production in 1963, a weapon that was arguably the most advanced in the Soviet arsenal at the time. Its short-stroke gas piston minimized moving mass while the bullet was still in the barrel, preserving accuracy. The handguard was designed to avoid contact with the barrel, preventing pressure that could throw off a shot.
The skeleton stock, with its thumbhole and cheek rest, was inspired by match rifle designs and provided a stable shooting platform. Weighing just 4. 3 kilograms with its PSO-1 scope, the Dragunov fed from a ten-round magazine and even featured a bayonet lug, a detail that revealed the Soviet expectation that this was not a specialist sniper weapon but an infantry tool for the ordinary soldier.
One out of every thirty riflemen in a motorized rifle platoon received the SVD after additional marksmanship training. These soldiers were not isolated as specialists but moved and fought with their units, their mission to extend the platoon’s effective reach to 800 meters and counter the range advantage of NATO’s full-power rifles. This made the Dragunov the world’s first designated marksman rifle, a concept that Western armies would not fully embrace for another forty years.
The PSO-1 scope was itself a marvel of forward thinking, a four-power optic with nitrogen-filled, fog-proof lenses, battery-powered red illumination for low-light conditions, and a temperature tolerance from minus 50 to plus 50 degrees Celsius. Its reticle featured a range-finding scale calibrated to a man 170 centimeters tall, allowing a shooter to quickly estimate distance by aligning the target’s feet with the bottom line and reading where his head touched the curve. A drum on top dialed in bullet drop for that range, and the scope mounted on a left-side rail so the iron sights remained usable if the optic failed or the enemy closed in.
Early versions even included an infrared detector to spot the glow of first-generation active night sights like the American M2, though this feature was later removed as obsolete.
When the Dragunov reached Vietnam around 1971, it confronted an American military that had no standard sniper rifle and no formal sniper school. The United States had dismantled its sniper program after the Korean War, a pattern of neglect that repeated after every major conflict. Marines landing in 1965 improvised with scrounged Winchester Model 70 rifles and commercial scopes, some even having their hunting rifles shipped from home.
The first official sniper rifle, the bolt-action M40, was adopted in 1966 but immediately suffered from wooden stocks that warped in the heat and humidity, requiring replacement with fiberglass. The optics were worse, with more than half of them accumulating so much moisture inside that they became useless in combat. Against this backdrop, the Dragunov’s reliability and ruggedness gave communist snipers a decisive advantage, even if bolt-action rifles could still outshoot it at extreme ranges.
The United States scrambled to respond, repurposing the M14 battle rifle into the XM21 sniper system. Chambered in the same full-power 7. 62 NATO cartridge that had driven the Dragunov’s creation, the M14 was too light for automatic fire and ill-suited to the jungle, but it was available in massive numbers.
Hand-accruized to national match standards and fitted with a clever 3-to-9 power scope that automatically dialed in bullet drop as the shooter ranged the target, the XM21 became the first American weapon to approach the Dragunov in concept. Sniper Adelbert Waldron used it to achieve 109 confirmed kills in Vietnam, but the United States remained desperate to capture an intact SVD. The Dragunov’s influence spread beyond Soviet borders as it escaped control and proliferated through the Warsaw Pact and beyond. Yugoslavia developed the Zastava M76 in the old German 8mm Mauser cartridge. These copies flooded global markets, often fooling observers into believing they were genuine Dragunovs. When the United States invaded Iraq in 2003, it walked into a country saturated with Dragunov-pattern rifles.
Saddam Hussein’s military had issued both Soviet SVDs and Iraqi variants like the Al-Qudsia, while the Tabuk rifle copied the Dragunov’s appearance but used a Kalashnikov action in the smaller 7. 62×39 cartridge.
The American occupation dissolved the Iraqi army, but hundreds of thousands of trained soldiers went home angry and unemployed, keeping their weapons. The insurgency that followed turned the Dragunov into a weapon of terror. Shooters operated from cars and vans, firing on American soldiers and then moving on, aiming around body armor and Kevlar, and filming their kills because the video was half the operation.
Among these insurgent snipers, one known as Juba became a legend. A video appeared showing a man with nine bullets in his rifle, a present for George Bush, he said, as he promised to 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁 nine soldiers for the viewers to watch. The videos followed, and the name Juba spread through American bases like a ghost story.
A massive hunt was launched, but no confirmed ending ever came. Juba may have been a propaganda creation layered over multiple real shooters, deliberately built to protect their identities and terrify American soldiers. The reality was that the sniper threat was terrifying, and the Dragunov rifle was at its core.
American infantry squads carried rifles chambered in 5. 56 NATO, and they were now outranged by the full-power cartridge of the Dragunov. The first answer was once again to take the old M14s and turn them into snipers.
Soldiers minimized their time dismounted and 𝓮𝔁𝓹𝓸𝓼𝓮𝓭, turret gunners received more armor, and acoustic gunshot detection systems like Boomerang were deployed to pinpoint the source of fire. Dedicated counter-sniper teams hunted enemy shooters. One dark incident on June 21, 2004, saw a four-man Marine team manning a rooftop observation post in Ramadi found dead, all killed at point-blank range without firing a shot in their defense.
Either someone caught them completely by surprise, or it was someone they trusted. The attackers took the team’s weapons, including an M40 sniper rifle. Two years later, a Marine scout sniper team spotted a man in a parked car videotaping a passing Marine vehicle patrol, a sniper rifle beside him.
The Marine sniper and his spotter killed him and his driver, and when they approached the car, in his lap was the M40 taken from the Ramadi rooftop, used against American soldiers for two years.
In Afghanistan on October 3, 2009, some 300 insurgents attacked the isolated outpost Keating, held by about 50 Americans and an Afghan army unit. Enemy fighters breached the perimeter, killing eight Americans and wounding 27 more. Staff Sergeant Clinton Romesha, already wounded by shrapnel and low on ammunition for his own carbine, took an SVD from a wounded Afghan National Army soldier.
He killed the enemy sniper who was firing on an American gunner in a Humvee, suppressed a machine gun nest on the ridge, and killed three fighters who were already inside the outpost. He then led the counterattack that retook the base, earning the Medal of Honor. Another 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔 story emerged from the civil war in El Salvador in 1989, where a guerrilla fighter with a Dragunov rifle hit a Salvadoran Air Force A-37B attack jet.
The round went through the cockpit and killed the co-pilot, while the pilot ejected and survived.
The first American purpose-built semi-automatic sniper rifle came in 2008 with the M110, later issued as the Squad Designated Marksman Rifle in the M110A1 version. It was essentially the SVD concept that the Russians had already fielded in 1963. Today, the Dragunov continues to serve in the biggest European war since World War II, used by both sides against each other in Ukraine.
Russia has formally begun replacing the Dragunov with the SVCh, a new semi-automatic sniper rifle in the same caliber that even uses the same SVD magazines, but production of the original Dragunov is far from slowing down. The rifle that terrified American soldiers in Vietnam, stalked them in Iraq, and still echoes across battlefields today remains a testament to Soviet engineering and a weapon that forced the United States to rethink its approach to infantry marksmanship for generations.
