The ground at the Somme did not simply absorb blood; it drank it with a voracious thirst that seemed to have no end. On the first morning of July 1, 1916, British soldiers climbed out of their trenches and walked into a storm of lead that had been engineered with cold, mechanical precision. The weapon that greeted them was not a product of battlefield evolution but of a single man’s genius, a man who had been told that the way to make a fortune was to help Europeans slaughter each other more efficiently.
Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim, the American-born inventor who had never received a formal engineering degree, had done exactly that. He had created a machine that would redefine the very nature of war, turning open fields into death traps and soldiers into statistics. The Maxim gun, the first true automatic firearm, was not just a weapon.
It was a harbinger of a new kind of hell, one that would consume an entire generation.
Maxim’s journey to infamy began in the United States, where he tinkered with electricity and various inventions as a child. But it was in London that he found his true calling. A friend reportedly told him that if he wanted to amass wealth, he should invent something that would allow Europeans to cut each other’s throats with greater facility.
Maxim took the advice to heart. He worked alone, drawing on a childhood memory of being knocked off his feet by a rifle’s recoil. That recoil, he realized, could be harnessed.
Between 1883 and 1885, he patented the three fundamental methods of operating an automatic gun: gas, recoil, and blowback. Every automatic firearm in the world today still relies on one of these principles. Maxim had invented them all.
He set up shop in Hatton Garden, London, and built his first prototype. The gun used a toggle lock mechanism, similar to a human knee, that locked the barrel and breech together at the moment of firing. The recoil drove both backward, then a cam broke the toggle, ejecting the spent cartridge and chambering a new one.
The entire cycle took a fraction of a second. Maxim compared it to a steam engine, with gunpowder as the steam and the breech block as the piston.
The weapon was fed from a 250-round canvas belt, a departure from the magazine-fed rapid-fire guns of the era. To prevent the barrel from melting under sustained fire, Maxim encased it in a metal jacket filled with water. After about 600 rounds, the water would boil, producing a steam plume that advertised the gun’s position.
Maxim solved this with a condenser can that recycled the steam back into water. But there was another problem: black powder. It burned dirty, producing thick clouds of white smoke that gave away the gun’s location.
Maxim worked with his brother Hudson to develop a smokeless powder, combining nitroglycerin, gun cotton, and castor oil. The result was cordite, a revolutionary propellant that allowed the Maxim to be used in concealment. The brothers never spoke again after a bitter patent dispute.
By 1888, the British had ordered 120 Maxims, and other major powers quickly followed. The Germans adopted it in 7. 92mm Mauser, the Russians in 7.
62x54mm, and the British in . 303. By 1912, the British had Vickers redesign the Maxim into a lighter version, the Vickers gun, which would serve until 1968.
Yet despite this widespread adoption, the Maxim had never been truly tested in a major war. Colonial skirmishes against tribal warriors armed with spears did not impress military commanders. They dismissed the machine gun as overrated, clinging to the belief that rifle, bayonet, and charge were the real war-winning formula.
The Russo-Japanese War of 1904 should have been a wake-up call. At Port Arthur, Russian Maxims mowed down Japanese soldiers in frontal charges, causing tens of thousands of casualties. European observers watched the war of trenches, barbed wire, and artillery but concluded that the machine gun was a niche weapon.
They believed that European armies, with their professional officers and modern tactics, would never face such a siege. They were catastrophically wrong. When World War I began in August 1914, all major armies were producing only 100 to 200 machine guns per month.
That number would skyrocket to over 10,000 per month as the war dragged on. The conflict that was supposed to end in weeks turned into 470 miles of trenches stretching from Switzerland to the English Channel. The Maxim and its derivatives were the backbone of this new form of combat.
In the opening months, massed infantry formations were mowed down by machine guns, just as they had been in Africa and Asia. By the end of 1914, the front had stabilized into a continuous line of trenches. Neither side could break through, and the machine gun was the primary reason.
The way machine guns were used evolved rapidly. They became the absolute backbone of the trench system. Whole sections of the line were built around them.
The rest of the defenses, the wire, the trenches, the artillery, were all arranged to feed targets into the machine guns’ killing area. The key concept was the beaten zone. When a machine gun fires, the bullets spread out in a cone from the muzzle.
Where this cone hits the ground, it creates an oval-shaped area called the beaten zone. On flat ground, a gun can achieve grazing fire, where the bullets stay no higher than a man’s chest for up to 700 meters. Anyone standing in that zone is in the bullet’s path.
Enfilade fire was the absolute killer. If the long axis of the beaten zone lined up with the long axis of an enemy formation, a single burst could catch an entire company. Machine guns were arranged so that their beaten zones overlapped, creating interlocking fields of fire.
There was nowhere to hide. The Germans perfected this tactic, placing their guns on reverse slopes where they were invisible from the front. Wire belts were laid deep to hold attackers in the beaten zone.
Reinforced concrete pillboxes appeared in late 1916, with walls several feet thick. Every gun position had multiple alternate emplacements connected by crawl trenches.
Indirect machine gun fire was another devastating technique. By aiming at unseen targets over ridges, gunners could drop bullets onto crossroads, communication trenches, and forming-up areas. The most spectacular example was at High Wood on the Somme, where 10 Vickers guns fired continuously for 12 hours, expending around one million rounds.
When the water in the jackets ran out, the crews used urine. The infantry attack failed, but the machine gun barrage held back German reinforcements. Every machine gun position was a small logistical operation.
Crews of four to six men manned the gun, sometimes up to eight. The MG08 alone weighed 26 kilograms with a full water jacket, and the sled brought the combat weight to 62 kilograms. Condensing cans suppressed the steam plume.
Belt filling machines were essential because hand-filling caused jams. Standard doctrine was to fire short bursts from alternate emplacements and shift positions after the gun’s location was disclosed. A single machine gun was deployed with a primary position plus one to three alternates.
When compromised, the crew had to disassemble the entire setup, carry it to the next position, and set it up again. The man behind the gun was the most sought-after target on the front. He sat in a fixed position, firing a weapon that was impossible to hide for long.
Snipers, artillery observers, and mortar crews all targeted him. The widely quoted figure is that Western Front machine gunners had a life expectancy of around 10 hours of firing time. Snipers often aimed for the water jacket to disable the gun rather than 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁 the gunner, who would be immediately replaced.
The German army issued trench armor to its machine gun crews from 1916 onward, and the MG08 carried a small armored shield.
The machine gunner’s horror was unique. Over hours of firing, he watched the bodies pile up in front of his position, all the men he himself had killed. This led to a widespread custom of killing captured machine gunners when they tried to surrender, often not by shooting.
It was one of the documented atrocities of the trench war. There was rage at the casualties just inflicted and distrust of gunners who fired to the last possible moment and then threw up their hands. The British went to war with each battalion having only two Vickers or Maxim guns.
That soon went to four, but then they created the Machine Gun Corps, pulling all heavy machine guns out of battalions and grouping them into specialist units. The Corps eventually had 170,500 men. Due to the nature of their job, they took over 62,000 casualties, 12,498 of them killed.
The Corps earned the nickname the Suicide Club. The Maxim family also lived a parallel life as fighter aircraft armament. The water jacket was stripped off and replaced with a louvred barrel shroud, cooled by the slipstream.
