Jinger Duggar and Joy-Anna Duggar may be close sisters today, but their relationship looked very different when they were children.
During a recent episode of The Jinger & Jeremy Podcast, the sisters opened up about their childhood and discussed why they never developed the close bond that might be expected between siblings raised under the same roof.
Their explanation had less to do with conflict and more to do with age, personality and the very different worlds they occupied inside their enormous family.
Jinger Says Their Four-Year Age Difference Mattered
Jinger explained that the four-year gap between them felt much larger when they were children.
In the Duggar household, the siblings were often grouped according to age. Jinger was part of the older group alongside Jana, Jill and Jessa, while Joy-Anna was among the younger children.
Jinger recalled feeling that the family was almost divided into different age sections.
She described herself as belonging to the “older section” while Joy was still viewed as one of the younger children.
That separation meant they often experienced family activities differently and didn’t naturally spend as much time together.
Joy agreed that the sisterly connection simply wasn’t particularly strong during those years.
“The bond was not really there,” she acknowledged.
Their Personalities Were Completely Different
But age wasn’t the only explanation.
Joy-Anna believes their personalities also played a major role.
While Jinger appeared to enjoy more traditionally feminine interests, Joy described herself as a tomboy who preferred running around outside and wearing clothes typically associated with her brothers.
She joked about how difficult it could be for her family to convince her to change out of an old T-shirt when they needed to attend an event.
Shopping and dressing up weren’t exactly activities she enjoyed.
Joy said their differences sometimes made it difficult for the sisters to understand one another.
She couldn’t understand why her sisters enjoyed shopping and dressing up so much, while she was perfectly happy wearing the same casual clothes and spending time outdoors.
Growing Up Changed Everything
Their relationship eventually changed as they became adults.
Today, Jinger and Joy-Anna have considerably more in common. Both are married and raising children, and both have publicly discussed stepping away from aspects of the religious environment in which they were raised.
The four-year age gap that once seemed significant is far less noticeable now that they are adults.
Distance hasn’t prevented them from maintaining their relationship, either. Joy-Anna and her family have made trips to visit Jinger and her family in California, giving the sisters opportunities to spend time together as adults.
What once seemed like a major divide between them has gradually disappeared.
From “Different Worlds” to Close Sisters
Their conversation offers a surprisingly relatable reminder that siblings don’t always grow up as best friends.
Sometimes, children who share the same home can still feel as though they’re living in completely different worlds.
For Jinger and Joy-Anna, their childhood separation wasn’t necessarily caused by resentment or a major disagreement. They simply occupied different places within their huge family and had very different personalities.
But adulthood gave them something childhood couldn’t: the chance to choose their relationship for themselves.
And today, the sisters appear to have finally found the closeness they didn’t have when they were growing up.
