Lewis Hamilton has conquered nearly everything Formula 1 has to offer, racing for the sport’s most storied teams from McLaren to Mercedes and now Ferrari. Yet somewhere in his legendary timeline, one dominant powerhouse remains missing from his resume — and reportedly, he once desperately wanted in.

For more than two decades, Hamilton has been the face of F1. But during Red Bull’s absolute reign from 2010 to 2013, he was watching from the outside while Sebastian Vettel racked up four straight world championships in that impossibly fast Adrian Newey machine.

That era reportedly pushed Hamilton to make an unexpected move, according to Red Bull team principal Christian Horner. Hamilton reached out about joining the team while Vettel was on top.

“We had Sebastian at that time and to have had two alpha drivers wouldn’t have made sense,” Horner reportedly said.

That rejection would end up reshaping the next decade of F1. Horner then encouraged Niki Lauda at Mercedes to sign Hamilton, thinking the star driver would be less dangerous in a struggling Mercedes than in a competitive McLaren.

“I encouraged Niki to spend the money as Lewis was wavering a little bit. It would be fair to say that backfired on me,” Horner admitted.

Backfired is putting it mildly. Hamilton went on to win six world titles with Mercedes between 2014 and 2020, while Red Bull watched their rivalry with him reach levels F1 fans still talk about today — especially that unforgettable 2021 battle against Max Verstappen.

The Hamilton-to-Red Bull whispers didn’t end there. In 2023, Horner claimed Hamilton’s camp reached out again, this time about becoming Verstappen’s teammate. Hamilton denied it, saying he’d checked with everyone on his side and nobody had contacted Red Bull.

“I don’t really know where that story has come from,” Hamilton said at the time. “I think he’s just stirring things.”

He even suggested it was actually Red Bull trying to reach him, revealing he’d rediscovered an old phone with a message from Horner waiting in his inbox.

Picture the alternate reality: Hamilton and Vettel as teammates battling for supremacy, with a young Verstappen rising through the ranks behind them. What a timeline that would have been.

Now Hamilton is set to join Ferrari in 2027 and possibly beyond, seemingly closing the door on any future Red Bull chapter.
