Charles Leclerc just dropped a major hint about his 2026 title ambitions, and it might not be the news Lewis Hamilton wanted to hear from his own Ferrari teammate.
The Monegasque driver currently sits fourth in the drivers’ standings, while Hamilton is chasing Kimi Antonelli in second place. But Leclerc made it crystal clear that he has no intention of playing backup.
In a recent Shell Motorsport video, Leclerc opened up about what keeps him pushing. He said the drive to constantly improve and the dream of winning a world championship with Ferrari are what fuel him. He also admitted that once you taste victory, you just want to feel that again and again.
That sounds like a driver who is hungry for wins, not one ready to step aside for a teammate.
Here’s the tricky part for Ferrari. Hamilton is 50 points behind Antonelli, and he needs every single point he can get. In an ideal world, the team would prioritize the seven-time champion to close that gap.
But Leclerc is only 31 points behind Hamilton, and he’s clearly not about to sacrifice his own shot at glory.
We saw how this played out for Lando Norris in 2024 when McLaren didn’t pick a clear number one driver. Points got split, and the championship slipped away.
If Ferrari’s development goes well, Hamilton could still make history with an eighth title. But if Leclerc keeps fighting for every win, the road to that crown might go straight through his own garage.
