McLaren team principal Andrea Stella just dropped a bombshell about the dynamic between his two star drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and it’s got fans talking.
According to Stella, there was real uncertainty heading into the 2026 season about whether the pair could still work together after last year’s intense championship battle. Norris came out on top, clinching his first F1 title, while Piastri finished third—just 13 points behind.
Speaking during the summer break, Stella admitted that while he fully expected Norris to stay locked in after winning the crown, the same couldn’t be said for Piastri. The Australian had to deal with the sting of missing out, and how he’d handle that was anything but guaranteed.
But so far, Stella says he’s “very pleased” with how both drivers are performing, even though McLaren sits 159 points behind Mercedes in the constructors’ standings. Norris is currently fifth in the drivers’ championship, with Piastri in seventh.
Stella explained that the new 2026 regulations have been a huge challenge for everyone on the grid. The cars demand a completely different driving style and a deeper understanding of the new power units. Both Norris and Piastri have reportedly responded with serious commitment, working day in and day out with the team.
What really stood out in Stella’s comments was his take on their relationship. He admitted it wasn’t a given that the harmony they built would survive a title fight that went down to the final race. Yet, surprisingly, the bond between them and the team has only grown stronger.
“Whilst this might have been expected of Lando… it was not quite so predictable for Oscar,” Stella said, noting that Piastri has leaned even more on the team to accelerate his growth both on and off the track.
