Jinger Duggar Vuolo and Joy-Anna Duggar Forsyth may share a close friendship today, but the sisters recently admitted that their relationship looked very different during childhood.
Speaking on The Jinger & Jeremy Podcast, the pair discussed how growing up in one of America’s largest reality TV families did not automatically mean every sibling developed a strong bond from the beginning.
Jinger explained that being four years older than Joy-Anna created a natural divide within the Duggar household.
According to her, the family’s many children were often grouped by age for daily activities and public appearances. As one of the older daughters, Jinger spent much of her time with sisters Jana, Jill, and Jessa, while Joy-Anna was considered part of the younger group.
Because they were usually involved in different activities and surrounded by different siblings, Jinger said the two rarely had opportunities to build a close relationship when they were young.
She recalled feeling that the family’s structure unintentionally separated the older and younger children into distinct groups.
While Jinger pointed to their age difference, Joy-Anna believed their contrasting personalities also played a major role.
She laughed while remembering that she had little interest in traditionally feminine activities during childhood. Instead of shopping or dressing up, Joy preferred spending time outdoors, often wearing oversized T-shirts and joining her brothers in adventurous games.
Getting dressed for family outings, she admitted, was frequently a struggle because she resisted wearing nicer clothes.
Joy-Anna said she simply couldn’t relate to the interests that many of her older sisters enjoyed at the time, making it harder for them to connect.
The sisters agreed that their bond became much stronger once they entered adulthood.
Today, both are married mothers of three children and have built lives outside the strict religious environment in which they were raised. Although they now live in different states, they remain in regular contact and frequently spend time together whenever their families have the opportunity.
With only a four-year age difference separating them, Jinger said the gap that once felt significant has become almost meaningless as adults.
Their conversation offered a rare look at how relationships within the large Duggar family have evolved over the years.
Rather than suggesting there was conflict between them, both sisters described their childhood distance as the result of family dynamics, different interests, and being at separate stages of life.
For longtime Duggar followers, the discussion highlighted how sibling relationships can naturally change over time. While Jinger and Joy-Anna may not have been especially close during their younger years, they now describe one another as close friends who have found common ground through marriage, motherhood, and shared life experiences.
