The earth literally rose and fell in a cataclysm of fire and fury beneath the fields of Flanders on June 7, 1917, when 19 colossal mines detonated simultaneously along a six-mile front, unleashing the largest non-nuclear explosion in history and annihilating an entire German defensive position in seconds. This was the brutal climax of World War I underground warfare, a hidden conflict of darkness, suffocation, and savage close-quarters combat that remains one of the most overlooked and horrifying chapters of the Great War.

For those who fought beneath the surface, the horrors were beyond imagination. Tunnels measuring barely four feet high and two and a half feet wide became hellish corridors where men worked in pitch black for twelve-hour shifts, constantly threatened by cave-ins, gas poisoning, drowning in sudden water breaches, or the chilling prospect of meeting an enemy miner in the dark. The men who volunteered for this duty were paid six times more than a frontline private, but no amount of money could prepare them for what they faced.

The war on the surface had ground to a stalemate by late 1914, with machine guns and quick-firing artillery turning no man’s land into a death trap. To break the deadlock, armies turned to ancient siege tactics: tunneling under enemy trenches, planting massive explosive charges, and detonating them from below. The Germans struck first in December 1914 at Givenchy, planting ten small mines that killed 800 Indian soldiers in a surprise assault.

That attack terrorized Allied commanders and ignited a desperate race to develop underground capabilities.

Britain quickly recruited its most skilled civilian miners, the “clay kickers” who had dug London’s underground tunnels. They used a silent, efficient technique: a three-man team consisting of a kicker, a bagger, and a trammer would dig through thick blue clay at an average of eight meters per day, far surpassing the German rate of only two meters. The wooden supports were designed to be assembled without nails or hammers, locking together like Lego and swelling in moisture to hold fast.

Silence was paramount, because detection meant death.

The atmosphere inside the tunnels was described by veterans as being in a coffin that sweated. Candles or oil lamps provided the only light, and soldiers watched the flame closely—it would indicate dangerous oxygen levels. Gas from shelling or chemical attacks was heavier than air, seeping down shafts and building up in the narrow spaces.

Small animals like canaries and mice were used as living detectors, giving their lives to warn of toxic fumes. The constant risk of tunnel entrances collapsing under artillery fire or being captured by enemy raiders added another layer of terror. In one incident, French artillery hit a German tunnel at Winterberg, trapping 250 men inside; only a handful escaped.

When enemy tunnels accidentally met underground, the resulting combat was savage and primal. There was no room for rifles. Men fought with digging tools, knives, revolvers, or sawed-off shotguns in pitch darkness, often after the earth collapsed around them.

Imagine suddenly finding yourself face-to-face with an enemy tunneler in a space barely large enough to crouch, the air thick with dust, the only sound the pounding of your heart and the scrape of steel. That was the reality of underground warfare.

To detect enemy mining, soldiers used primitive listening devices: oil drums filled with water, watching for ripples, or biting on a stick to feel vibrations through their teeth. Soon, geophones and stethoscopes allowed listeners to pinpoint digging up to 160 feet away. When a counter-tunnel was dug, a camouflet charge would be planted to collapse the enemy tunnel or make the ground unstable.

The most terrifying moment for listeners was when the digging suddenly stopped—that silence could mean the enemy had planted their mine and withdrawn, waiting to detonate.

The largest mines ever used in warfare were those of the Messines Ridge offensive in June 1917. After 18 months of secret preparation, British and Commonwealth tunneling units planted 21 mines under German-held hills near Ypres, containing a total of 450 tons of explosives. The combined length of tunnels dug for this operation exceeded three miles.

The Germans knew mining was happening but could not detect the deep clay layers where the Allies worked. Decoy tunnels were even dug to mislead them.

At 3:10 a. m. on June 7, 1917, within 20 seconds, 19 mines erupted.

Witnesses described the entire ridge lifting hundreds of feet into the air before crashing back down. The blast killed an estimated 7,000 to 10,000 German soldiers instantly, many of whom were hiding in deep dugouts that had previously protected them from artillery. The craters changed the local geography, some measuring 65 feet deep and 300 feet across.

Allied infantry advanced with almost no opposition, capturing the ridge in hours.

One of the mines, at Spanbroekmolen, did not detonate in 1917. It exploded suddenly in 1955 after a lightning strike, killing a cow in a Belgian field. Several more large mines remain buried under Flanders to this day, waiting for the wrong spark.

The craters themselves still scar the landscape, visited by tourists who can only imagine the horror that produced them.

The underground war was a grotesque extension of the surface stalemate, a war within a war that took the already unimaginable suffering of World War I and twisted it into something even darker. Men who had never seen a mine before volunteered to dig their own graves, digging for months in absolute silence, knowing that a single sound could bring death raining down from above or from beside them. They fought with their hands in the dark, buried alive by collapsing tunnels, drowned by sudden floods, or asphyxiated by gas that seeped into their narrow world.

This is the forgotten horror of the First World War. While the battles of Verdun and the Somme dominate history books, the tunnelers waged a secret war in the shadows, one that produced the largest man-made explosions before the nuclear age. The earth remembers.

The craters remain. And the silent tunnels beneath Flanders still hold the remains of hundreds of men who never saw the sun again.
