What began as a search for answers about her family’s past turned into a life-changing discovery for Los Angeles filmmaker Sophia Maddox.
After years of wondering about her father’s biological family, Maddox learned through DNA testing that her grandfather was Charles Manson, the infamous cult leader responsible for orchestrating the 1969 Tate-LaBianca murders. The revelation became the foundation of the new documentary My Grandfather Charles Manson, which premieres July 22 on Hulu.
A Phone Call Changed Everything
Maddox said her life changed unexpectedly in 2022 after her father, Daniel Arguelles, called with startling news.
Arguelles had submitted his DNA to a genealogy website years earlier in hopes of identifying his biological father. After matching with another individual who shared the same paternal DNA, additional testing confirmed that his biological father was Charles Manson.
The discovery meant Maddox was the granddaughter of one of the most notorious figures in American criminal history.
“I just bent over and sobbed,” Maddox recalled after learning the truth.
A Family Secret Hidden for Decades
According to the documentary, Maddox’s grandmother believed years earlier that Daniel’s biological father may have been Manson but never publicly revealed it.
Only after her death and the DNA confirmation did the family learn the truth.
The revelation prompted Maddox to begin documenting her emotional journey, initially filming herself simply as a way to process the shocking news before the project evolved into a full-length documentary.
Searching Beyond the Headlines
Rather than focusing solely on Manson’s crimes, Maddox set out to understand how his legacy affected later generations.
As part of her investigation, she visited places connected to Manson’s early life and interviewed former members of the so-called Manson Family, as well as Michael Brunner, one of Manson’s known sons.
Maddox said she wanted to form her own understanding instead of relying only on decades of media coverage surrounding the case.
A Journey Through Generational Trauma
The documentary also explores the impact the revelation had on Maddox’s relationship with her father.
While researching their family’s history created tension between them, Maddox says she ultimately believes confronting the truth helped her better understand herself and break what her father often described as a cycle of generational trauma.
Finding Peace With the Truth
Today, Maddox says discovering her family’s hidden past has changed the way she views identity.
Instead of allowing Charles Manson’s legacy to define her, she hopes sharing her story encourages others to recognize that people are not destined to repeat the mistakes of previous generations.
For Maddox, uncovering the truth was painful—but it also became the first step toward understanding her family’s history and reclaiming her own future.
