Chris Brown has been hit with a major legal setback after a California jury ordered the singer to pay nearly $13 million in damages following a lawsuit filed by a former housekeeper who claimed she suffered life-changing injuries in a dog attack at his home.
The case centers around an incident at Brown’s Tarzana, California property, where former employee Maria Avila said she was attacked by a 200-pound Caucasian shepherd named Hades while working at the residence.
According to court reports, the jury awarded Avila $12.9 million after finding that the attack caused severe and permanent injuries. Avila testified that she suffered facial injuries, major scarring, vision problems and nerve damage that affected her daily life and ability to work.
The court also awarded damages to Avila’s family members. Her sister Patricia Avila, who reportedly witnessed the aftermath of the attack and was also employed at the property, received $885,000 for emotional distress. Maria’s husband Oscar Olivo was awarded an additional $50,000.
During the trial, Chris Brown defended himself and said he had warned the workers about the dogs on the property. He testified that he told them the animals were “absolutely not” friendly and instructed them not to go outside without security nearby.
Brown also argued that Hades was not his personal pet but instead belonged to his security operation. He said the dog was brought in because of previous security concerns at the property, including alleged break-ins and unwanted attention.
However, the lawsuit focused on whether enough safety measures were taken to protect workers despite the presence of a large guard dog. The jury ultimately sided with Avila and her family, resulting in a total award approaching $13.9 million.
The verdict adds another legal challenge for Brown, who is also facing an upcoming criminal case in the U.K. related to allegations involving a 2023 nightclub incident with music producer Abraham Diaw. Brown has denied wrongdoing and remains scheduled to appear in court as that case continues.
The latest ruling marks another difficult chapter in the singer’s ongoing legal battles, as he continues balancing his music career with multiple disputes outside the spotlight.
