In a heart-wrenching revelation, former NFL star Chris Johnson disclosed on Monday that he has been diagnosed with ALS, a condition that has already robbed him of his voice. The 40-year-old athlete, best known for his explosive career with the Tennessee Titans, shared his diagnosis during an emotional interview on “Good Morning America,” using a speech-generating device to communicate.
Johnson, who played a decade in the NFL and earned accolades as one of the league’s top running backs, revealed that he received the diagnosis last year at the age of 39. Speaking with host Michael Strahan, he explained that his case is classified as sporadic ALS, a form of the disease that occurs without a family history. “There’s no history of ALS in my family,” he noted, emphasizing the unpredictability of the illness.
The former athlete described the 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔 nature of the diagnosis, admitting, “It can happen to someone who never expected it.” Faced with this life-altering news, Johnson expressed his determination to fight against the disease. “Honestly, I don’t know if you ever fully process it,” he shared. “At first, you’re in shock. Then you realize you have two choices. You can give up, or you can fight. I chose to fight.”

Johnson’s journey with ALS began subtly, as he noticed a weakening in his right hand while spending time with his wife, Brittany, and their four children. Initially, he believed the issue stemmed from the physical toll of his football career. Brittany echoed this sentiment, recalling how they thought it might be related to a pinched nerve rather than ALS.

As they navigate this challenging journey, the Johnson family has opted for experimental treatments in hopes of advancing research for ALS. “It’s continued to progress much faster than I ever imagined,” Johnson revealed. “Just over a year ago, I was picking up my 7-year-old daughter for her birthday. Today, I couldn’t do that.”

Chris Johnson’s illustrious career includes a standout season in 2006 when he rushed for over 2,000 yards and earned the title of Offensive Player of the Year. His remarkable achievements on the field have left a lasting legacy, and the support from the NFL community has been overwhelming. The Jets, one of his former teams, publicly expressed their solidarity, stating, “Our entire Jets family is with you, @ChrisJohnson28. Sending strength and support as you face this challenge.”
Despite the physical challenges posed by ALS, Johnson remains resilient. “People sometimes look at the physical disability and assume you’re not still the same person inside,” he said. “I still think the same. I still dream. I still love my family. My body just doesn’t cooperate.” He credited his wife and children for providing him with the motivation to keep fighting, declaring, “They give me a reason to keep going.”
As Chris Johnson bravely shares his story, many are left wondering how this battle will unfold and what it means for the future of ALS awareness and research.
