Missing Arizona Girl Believed at Risk of Sex Trafficking Found Nearly 1,500 Miles Away in Washington Encampment
A missing Arizona girl believed to be at risk of sex trafficking was found nearly 1,500 miles from home at a homeless encampment in Olympia, Washington, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
The child, who had been reported missing from Mesa, Arizona, was recovered last week after authorities received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The tip, sent on June 18, indicated that the girl had last been seen in Olympia and could potentially be a victim of sex trafficking.
Investigators later narrowed their search to an area known locally as “The Jungle,” a sprawling 20-acre homeless encampment in Olympia.

Authorities Search Notorious Olympia Encampment
After receiving the tip, law enforcement gathered additional information that led them to focus on The Jungle, an encampment known for crime and safety concerns.
The site, located in a wooded area, has been described as a large and unstable encampment filled with tents, trash and debris. Local reports have said between 100 and 250 people may live there at different times, with the population changing throughout the year.
Authorities searched the encampment and found the missing child on Thursday.
It remains unclear how the girl ended up in Washington, more than a thousand miles away from her home in Arizona.
U.S. Marshals Praise Multi-Agency Effort
The recovery was the result of cooperation between federal, state, local and community partners, officials said.
“Protecting our nation’s children is of the highest importance,” said Donrien Stephens, acting U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Washington.
He credited the safe recovery to investigative work, collaboration and persistence by agencies involved in the search.
Stephens said the child was considered at elevated risk of human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation.

No Arrests Reported
Officials have not announced any arrests in connection with the case.
Authorities have also not released details about how long the girl had been missing, who she may have been with, or what circumstances led her to Olympia.
Because the case involves a minor and possible trafficking concerns, officials have not publicly identified the child.
Child Now in Protective Custody
After being found, the girl was placed in the custody of the Olympia Police Department and the Washington State Department of Children, Youth and Families.
Investigators are expected to continue examining the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and recovery.
The case highlights the vulnerability of missing children who may be targeted for exploitation, especially when they are far from home and located in unstable environments.
For now, authorities say the priority is the child’s safety and continued care as the investigation moves forward.
