A California judge has determined that Michael Gledhill, the man accused of killing veteran actor James Handy, is currently not mentally competent to face criminal prosecution. The ruling means the legal case will be paused while Gledhill undergoes treatment aimed at restoring his competency.
According to the court, Gledhill is unable to fully understand the legal proceedings or assist his attorneys in preparing a defense. Medical experts concluded that mental health treatment is necessary before the case can move forward, and the judge approved involuntary psychiatric medication as part of that process.
Authorities allege that Gledhill fatally stabbed the 81-year-old actor at a residence in Tarzana, California, on June 3. Prosecutors say he was arrested shortly after the incident and remains charged with murder, but the competency ruling does not determine guilt or innocence.
The case has now shifted into the mental health court system. If doctors later determine that Gledhill is competent to stand trial, the criminal proceedings are expected to resume. A future court hearing will determine the next steps in his treatment and legal status.
