In a chilling turn of events, new details have emerged regarding the ransom notes linked to the kidnapping of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie. These notes, sent shortly after her abduction on February 1, are now believed to be from her actual captors, raising serious concerns about her fate.
According to a report by CBS News, investigators have indicated that the notes were sent from the same digital IP address, suggesting a direct connection to the kidnappers. This revelation has intensified fears regarding Nancy’s well-being, especially after one note ominously claimed she had died and was “buried in nature,” as reported by ABC News.
The first ransom note, which was directed to an Arizona television station and other media outlets, asserted that Nancy, the mother of “Today” show anchor Savannah Guthrie, was “safe but scared” while demanding a staggering $4 million in Bitcoin for her release. However, the subsequent note took a darker turn, stating that Nancy had passed away and offered no specific terms for her body’s return.
Savannah shared a poignant video on social media on February 7, following the receipt of the second note. In a heartfelt plea, she expressed, “We received your message and we understand. We beg you now to return our mother to us. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay.”
Confusion surrounded the reports on Monday when TMZ, which also received similar ransom communications, claimed none mentioned Nancy’s death. However, the Arizona TV station confirmed the details of the note that referenced her burial, aligning with ABC News’ findings. The station opted not to disclose this information immediately after receiving the note, consistent with the cautious approach taken by various media outlets regarding the sensitive content.
The authenticity of the ransom notes remains under scrutiny, with the FBI reportedly considering them credible enough to warrant serious investigation. Savannah expressed her belief in the legitimacy of the two notes they responded to, stating in a March interview, “I think most of them — it’s my understanding — are not real, and I didn’t see them. But I believe the two notes that we received… I tend to believe those are real.”
The investigation has shifted focus from a straightforward kidnapping to potential homicide, following the alarming claims made in the second note. TMZ also reported receiving several notes that the FBI deemed significant, with one sender claiming to have knowledge of the kidnappers while insisting he was not involved. This individual warned that “time is of the essence,” later stating that Nancy had been buried in Mexico and would only reveal the location in exchange for a single Bitcoin.

As of now, Nancy remains missing, with no suspects or leads identified by law enforcement nearly five months after her disappearance. The only known detail is that a masked intruder broke into her Tucson home on the night she was taken, a terrifying moment captured on security footage.
With so many questions still unanswered, the search for Nancy continues. What will the next chapter in this heartbreaking story reveal?
