Ciryl Gane is focused on his upcoming interim heavyweight title fight against Alex Pereira, but the shadow of Tom Aspinall’s accusations looms large. As Gane prepares for this pivotal matchup at the UFC White House card this Sunday, he’s not letting As pinall’s words distract him.
The tension stems from their previous encounter last October, which ended in controversy when an accidental eye poke from Gane rendered Aspinall unable to continue. The bout was ruled a no-contest, leaving Aspinall to undergo multiple surgeries to address the injury. Following the incident, Aspinall publicly labeled Gane a “cheater,” claiming the eye poke was intentional.
In response to these allegations, Gane maintained a calm demeanor during a recent media day, stating, “This is his opinion. We have a beautiful, professional referee. The referee told me nothing because I respect the rules. It’s just an opinion. Everybody has an opinion. It’s OK.”
Reflecting on the aftermath of their fight, Gane admitted he felt a mix of frustration and sadness. The disappointment was palpable, especially considering the hard work he put into preparing for the bout. However, he has since shifted his focus entirely to Pereira and the opportunity that lies ahead.
“Straight after the fight in the cage, it was a mix of feelings,” Gane shared. “A little bit frustrated, a little bit angry, a little bit sad. Because thinking about all of the sacrifices I made. But after that, it was a good first round, injury-free, healthy. The most important thing is that.”
As Gane gears up for this crucial fight, fans are left wondering if a rematch with Aspinall is on the horizon, and how this interim title clash will shape the future of the heavyweight division. What will happen next in this unfolding saga?
