In a surprising twist of events, UFC fighter Alex Pereira found himself on the receiving end of some unexpected trash talk—this time from someone he isn’t even scheduled to fight. Pereira, who is gearing up to battle Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight title on June 14 at the UFC White House, experienced a unique moment during a recent press conference.
During a pre-event press conference for UFC 328, tensions escalated when Josh Hokit, who is set to face Derrick Lewis, began launching insults at Pereira. The situation took an interesting turn when Ilia Topuria, the lightweight champion and headliner of the event, stepped in to defend Pereira, leading to Hokit being removed from the venue.
Reflecting on the incident, Pereira expressed his surprise at Topuria’s show of support, especially considering the language barrier that often complicates such exchanges. “I was much more surprised with Topuria standing up for me,” Pereira shared through a translator. “He seemed to understand that the translations weren’t clear, and I think he felt bad for me.”
This matchup marks Pereira’s first appearance in the heavyweight division, with the winner poised to face Tom Aspinall in a unification bout later this year, pending Aspinall’s recovery from an eye injury sustained in his last fight against Gane at UFC 321.
Despite the heated exchange, Pereira remained calm during the confrontation. “Honestly, I was just chill over there,” he said. “Everything happened too fast for me to really grasp what was going on.”
Hokit has quickly risen through the ranks with an impressive 3-0 record in the UFC, earning bonuses along the way. His recent victory over Curtis Blaydes at UFC 327 was hailed as one of the greatest heavyweight fights in UFC history. However, Hokit wasn’t pleased with Topuria’s intervention, suggesting that Pereira could have handled the situation on his own.
When asked if he had ever encountered anything similar to Hokit’s antics in his extensive combat sports career, Pereira simply replied, “No, no, no. I never saw anything like this.”
As the anticipation builds for the upcoming fight, fans are left wondering how this unexpected drama will play out in the octagon. What will the fallout be from this unusual pre-fight encounter?
