Tensions are skyrocketing as Justin Gaethje and Ilia Topuria prepare for their highly anticipated showdown at UFC White House next weekend. With the undisputed lightweight title on the line, Gaethje isn’t holding back in his criticism of Topuria, whom he has dubbed an “annoying little bastard.”
As the fight draws closer, Topuria has ramped up his trash talk, even sharing a video of himself placing a white rose at a mural dedicated to Gaethje, surrounded by images of his previous opponents. However, Gaethje remains unfazed by Topuria’s antics.
“Honestly, he’s just a gimmick,” Gaethje expressed in an interview with Fox Sports. “He calls himself the king and thinks he’s a God. I can’t even imagine spending half an hour in a room with him listening to him talk about himself.”
In a pointed jab, Gaethje also referenced Topuria’s recent divorce, stating, “I would leave him. That’s all I’m saying. I wouldn’t put up with his nonsense.”
Since clinching his first UFC title, Topuria has embraced a brash persona, treating the upcoming fight as a mere formality. He’s even updated his social media profile to flaunt an undefeated record of 18-0 ahead of the event. Yet, Gaethje isn’t intimidated, recalling his own experience with cocky fighters, particularly Paddy Pimblett, whom he defeated earlier this year.
“I used to be young and reckless too,” Gaethje admitted. “Topuria’s confidence has worked for him so far because he truly believes in himself. But that kind of attitude can be dangerous. It was the same with Paddy. Being overly self-assured can lead to pitfalls.”
UFC White House is set for June 14th and will also feature an interim heavyweight title bout between Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane. As the fight approaches, fans are left wondering: will Gaethje’s experience and mindset be enough to counter Topuria’s bravado?
