Kelly Matthews was one of Wade Steven Wilson‘s earliest victims — and she survived to tell the story.

Season 2, episode 1 of Netflix’s Worst Ex Ever revisits their volatile relationship, which unfolded just months before Wilson murdered two women in a single day.

Matthews met Wilson on a dating app in late 2018, and the two quickly became inseparable. But before long, troubling behavior began to surface. Wilson pawned her laptop and stole puppies from a breeder — a crime he tried to pin on Matthews, she claimed in Worst Ex Ever.

Their on-again, off-again relationship took a darker turn in February 2019, when Matthews claimed Wilson physically and sexually assaulted her. After police declined to file charges, Wilson left the area and resurfaced elsewhere in Florida. Months later, on Oct. 7, 2019, he killed Kristine Melton, 35, in her sleep before murdering Diane Ruiz, 43, as she walked to work later that same day.

“Deep down, I wasn’t shocked at all. I knew that that’s what he was capable of,” Matthews said of Wilson’s crimes in Worst Ex Ever.

Who is Kelly Matthews?

Matthews, an animal lover from West Palm Beach, Fla., is one of Wilson’s former girlfriends.

“When I was 19 years old, I started working at a zoo. I used to train tigers and work with venomous snakes. Then, I wrestled alligators for two years,” she shared on Netflix’s Worst Ex Ever. “I took a break from the dangerous stuff and got into dog grooming.”

How did Kelly Matthews and Wade Wilson meet?

Matthews was 26 and living in her first apartment in West Palm Beach when she met Wilson on a dating app. At the time, however, he was going by his middle name, Steven.

The pair officially started dating in late September or early October 2018, and about a month into the relationship, Wilson moved in with Matthews.

“I was super happy. I thought, ‘This is it. I’m going to marry this guy,’ ” she recalled in Worst Ex Ever.

Meanwhile, Wilson was secretly dating other people. After Wilson admitted that he pawned Matthews’ laptop, she filed a police report and discovered that his name was Wade.

Things began to unravel after Wilson and Matthews’ close friend stole several dogs from a breeder with plans to sell them. According to Matthews, Wilson threatened to kill her pets if she did not take the blame.

Matthews ultimately spent 27 hours in jail, and when she returned home, both Wilson and her friend were gone.

Matthews later contacted police and reported that Wilson had stolen her handgun, prompting a warrant for his arrest.

He was eventually taken into custody, but Matthews bailed him out four days later and encouraged him to enter rehab.

When she refused to drive him to a treatment facility in the Florida Keys, the situation escalated violently on Feb. 18, 2019.

Matthews said Wilson strangled, punched and sexually assaulted her before tying her up with her own clothing. She also alleged that he sold her phone for gas money and forced her to travel with him to the Florida Keys so he could meet another girlfriend, Courtney.

Wilson left Matthews at a gas station, and she drove herself home before calling the police.

“When he choked me, it felt like he was going to kill me,” she said to Palm Beach County’s Detective Potter in an audio clip shown in Worst Ex Ever dated Feb. 19, 2019. “He kept threatening to stab me 30 times and throw me in a ditch.”

Detective Potter interviewed Wilson, who denied Matthews’ allegations. Potter closed the case before Wilson’s DNA results were returned, claiming there was not enough evidence to move forward.

Matthews later discovered that Wilson had been seeing other people throughout their relationship. Hoping to warn others, she began publicly sharing her experiences with him on social media.

Wilson’s biological father eventually came across Matthews’ posts and reached out to her directly.

“He told me, ‘Don’t go back to him. He’s done this before,’ ” she recalled.

Months later, in October 2019, Matthews said Wilson’s father contacted her again after his son was arrested for the murders of Melton and Ruiz.

“When I heard that he got the death penalty, all I could think of was if the Palm Beach County sheriffs had done their job, these two women would probably still be here,” Matthews said in Worst Ex Ever.

Matthews filed a complaint against the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department for not thoroughly investigating her sexual assault. An internal review ultimately found that Detective Potter had failed to conduct a complete investigation.

He was suspended for three weeks, but ultimately only served two weeks’ suspension.

Today, Matthews works at the Avian Research Institute & Conservation Center in Florida, according to TikTok.

“Wade ruined my trust in the dating world, but he didn’t ruin my life,” she said in Worst Ex Ever.
