“I’d like to inform everyone that it was a pleasure working with them,” I said, keeping my expression calm as the elevator doors slid shut on Raymond Vance’s stunned face. As the elevator descended toward the grand lobby, my personal phone buzzed in my suit pocket. Julian Prescott’s name lit up the screen. I took a deep breath, straightened my gray formal suit, and answered.

“Ethan, where are you? ” Julian asked, his voice echoing through the marble atrium. “My investment committee is standing here, ready to write new financial history today. There’s been a sudden change in management plans, Julian,” I replied, keeping my tone perfectly steady.
“I’m no longer employed at Valen Strategic Solutions. ”
A heavy silence hung over the line. “What the hell are you talking about, Ethan? ” Julian demanded.
“You’re the Executive Director of Strategy. We’re five minutes away from closing a 5. 8 billion dollar deal. I’ve been terminated,” I said as the elevator reached the ground floor with a soft chime.
“Effective immediately. I received my dismissal letter on the day of the signing. This is absurd,” Julian scoffed. “Is this a last-minute pressure tactic by Raymond to squeeze an extra half percent from the equity structure?
”
The doors opened to reveal the sunlit lobby. Through the glass walls, I saw Julian Prescott standing surrounded by seven senior partners from Apex Global Capital, his phone pressed to his ear. Twenty feet behind him stood Chloe Vance, looking insufferably self-satisfied. She’d come down the main staircase moments earlier, clearly eager to witness the results of her authority.
“This isn’t a tactic, Julian,” I said firmly, holding a cardboard box of my personal belongings under my arm. “It’s simply corporate reality. I suggest you consult Raymond about how they handle signing procedures. ”
I ended the call and walked across the polished floor.
Julian spotted me immediately. His frustrated expression dissolved into pure bewilderment. He strode straight toward me, pulling me into a strong, quick embrace as if physically refusing the news I’d just delivered. “Here he is,” Julian said, staring into my eyes.
“Are you ready to head to the main hall and complete the merger? ” I met his gaze directly, aware that Chloe Vance was approaching, clutching a thick file against her chest like a shield of absolute authority. “I’m afraid that won’t be happening, Julian,” I said, loud enough for the whole lobby to hear. “She just fired me.
The deal is officially off. ”
Julian froze. His eyes slowly moved from mine to settle on Chloe Vance, who had just stopped beside us. She lifted her chin in an arrogant display of authority she didn’t deserve.
“What did you do? ” Julian asked, his voice dropping to an icy tone with a threatening edge. Chloe’s confident smile flickered for a split second as she felt the collective weight of eight billionaire investors’ stares land on her. She clutched the employee handbook tighter to her chest and adjusted her stance.
“I was simply enforcing company standards,” Chloe declared, her voice dripping with self-assured arrogance. “As the newly appointed Compliance Director, my job is to maintain discipline. Julian, please. You approved that decision with your explicit signature in the boardroom twenty minutes ago.
”
The lobby fell into a tense silence. Julian’s jaw tightened as he processed her words. The partners behind him exchanged uneasy glances. I stood there, box in hand, watching the scene unfold—the deal of a lifetime crumbling because of one woman’s petty power play.
Julian turned back to me, his eyes searching for a solution. But there was none. The papers were already signed. The termination was already in motion.
And in that moment, I realized that my twenty-year career at Valen had ended not with a negotiation, but with a whisper of corporate betrayal disguised as compliance.
