I watched my own front door on a Wi-Fi security camera and caught my wife’s affair partner standing there again. She wasn’t home. He didn’t know I could see him. I hit the intercom at full volume and let him have it.

“She’s not here, mate. If you’re looking for your sex toys, they’re not here either. But I can offer you a carrot. ”
He ran.
I’ve never seen a man move that fast away from a doorstep. I’d already been through the worst of it. Seven years of lies, I found out, seven years of betrayal with another man while I was working, traveling, trusting her. I moved out on March 5th after confronting her.
Since then, I’d been gathering everything I could, hiring a private investigator, talking to the other man’s wife, putting the pieces together. The affair partner’s wife told me he’d come crawling back to her, claiming the affair was a mistake. She wasn’t buying it. He’d been at my house begging my wife to take him back, and now he was threatening to fight her for custody of their son.
She told me he hadn’t shown the slightest interest in that boy since she threw him out. Then my wife asked if she could come collect her things. I said Saturday. She showed up and asked if we could talk.
She reminded me I’d wanted full disclosure, that she’d sent me a fifteen-thousand-word email with a complete account of the affair, and I’d refused to read it. She said she wanted to finish the interrogation we started weeks ago, the infidelity baseball, as I’d called it. She said I’d told her I’d leave if I caught her lying three times, but I’d only caught her twice. She wanted a chance to finish.
I gave her a date. I needed time to prepare. I went through bank statements, financial records, and the comments on my posts. People had suggested questions.
I made a list. On Saturday, she arrived at noon. She looked presentable, respectful, not trying to be sexy. I kept my tone cold and polite, the way you’d speak to a colleague you barely know.
I told her the terms. I didn’t trust anything she volunteered. She would answer my questions. I wouldn’t answer hers.
If I caught her lying, even once, the conversation was over, and she’d never get another chance to speak to me directly. She said she understood. She thanked me for the opportunity. I started with her recent contact with the affair partner.
She admitted he’d come to the house twice since I left. The first night, she refused to open the door. The second time, the Sunday after I walked out, she let him in. He’d wanted to continue.
She said she told him no, that she only let him in to say it clearly. She blocked him everywhere after that. I asked if she was grieving the relationship. She said there was no room in her heart to grieve a side relationship while her real one was in tatters.
She said she didn’t love him, didn’t think she ever had. I asked about the persona she used with him. She admitted she acted differently around him, used vulgar language, dirty talk. She’d told me years ago, when I tried to talk dirty with her, that she found it a turnoff, that she wanted me to make love to her.
“Why the double standard? ”
She paused. Then she said, “I think it’s because I don’t love him and I don’t want to worry about him losing respect for me. Your respect is important to me.
”
She said the dirty talk and dirty sex helped her detach emotionally, helped her treat him like a sex toy. The sex was always impersonal, she made sure of it. I asked about the night I called her, the Tuesday night I found out, when he was there. She said she was in the bedroom and he was in the shower.
I asked where the box of sex toys was. She said they were on the bed. “You not only fobbed me off by telling me you were having an early night, but you blamed me for your tiredness. Do you remember that?
”
She started crying. She said it sounded terrible. We took a five-minute break. I asked whose idea it was to introduce the toys.
She said it was kind of hers. He’d asked for a prostate massage. She refused to put a finger in his butt. The toys were a compromise.
She needed him fully erect before sex. He needed the toys for that. I asked how long the toys had been involved. At least five years.
She’d told me she didn’t like sex toys. She said she only used them as backup when he couldn’t get her off. About half the time. I asked if she’d done anything for him she’d never done for me.
She said they tried anal once, she didn’t like it, so she never tried it with me. I asked why she let him finish inside her. She said pregnancy was virtually impossible because he’d had a vasectomy and she was on the pill. I asked why she hadn’t mentioned the vasectomy in our earlier conversation.
She said she was trying to protect his privacy in that moment, then realized it was stupid. I asked if he ever said anything disrespectful about me. She said he did once, early on. She threw him out, felt so guilty she couldn’t look at him.
He came crawling back, and they agreed their partners were off limits in conversation. They stuck to that for seven years. They role-played that their partners didn’t exist. I asked about virtual interactions.
Yes, they had phone sex, video calls, sexting, about once a week. She’d message him from work when she was horny and go to the bathroom. During lockdowns, they took a break, focused on their partners, but still texted, occasionally had phone sex. I asked if they ever met in hotels.
She said no. His house was out because his wife was there. Hotels would have left an evidence trail. They used our house because it was safer.
I asked who bought the sex toys. He did. He had a PO box in Belfast to avoid detection. I asked if she’d had other affairs.
She said no, he was the only one. I asked if anyone ever joined them. He suggested a threesome with another man in the first year. She said no.
He never asked about another woman, but she said she’d have said no. I asked what she was even getting out of it, why she kept going for so long. She said she got more out of it early on, but over time it became a comfortable arrangement. She said several times she felt guilty and thought about ending it, but he seemed more invested.
He made veiled threats about blowing up both marriages. He talked about leaving his wife to be together. She told him that would never happen. She said it felt like a nuclear arms race, where the threat of mutual destruction kept them locked in place.
“A little bit of fun on the lonely nights while you were away, and to keep my marriage. ”
I asked about the sheets. She’d laid down towels so the sheets wouldn’t get soiled. I told her I knew about the seven towels in the wash bag.
She admitted she usually changed the sheets, but on the last visit, he was there the night before I came home, and she had to go to work in the morning, so there was no time. After the questions, I thanked her for being truthful. She said she knew she’d done a terrible thing, that she was so sorry, that she’d do anything to fix our relationship. She tried to hold me.
I stepped back. “Don’t touch me. Your touch makes my skin crawl. ”
She told me outright that if I took her upstairs, she’d let me do anything I wanted.
I told her it was time to leave. My solicitor was arranging the sale of the house. She started crying hysterically, asking what happened next. I told her I needed time to process, and all contact should go through my solicitor.
She stood on the front porch. I closed the door and locked it. That evening, I opened a bottle of Jameson I’d been saving and blocked every so-called mutual friend on my phone. I reblocked my wife’s number.
Monday came, and I felt like I finally understood what happened and why it went on for so long. Not forgiven, not even close, but understood. I had three months to close this chapter. Sell the house, sell my meager possessions, then fly out to Australia.
I thought I was on the home straight. Then the other woman called. She’d been doing better. The affair partner was visiting his son again.
I was happy to hear that. Then we put something together that made me sick all over again. He’d never told his wife about the vasectomy. I’d assumed it was a decision made between him and his wife.
It wasn’t. It was something he and my wife decided between themselves. His wife thought they were still trying for more children. That selfish deception was why they only had one child.
Out of everything, this was the most selfish thing I’d come across. They wasted seven years of that woman’s reproductive life. My wife convinced him to string her along through fear the affair would come to light in a divorce. How can anyone do that to a person?
I’d looked into vasectomies myself for my own reasons. It’s a day procedure. Keyhole surgery, no noticeable scarring, costs around five hundred pounds. Easy to conceal from a partner.
I didn’t think I could feel more disgust for my wife. That barrel has no bottom. Then, on Thursday night, four of our mutual friends showed up at my door, claiming they wanted to make sure I was okay. They’d noticed I’d ghosted them.
One of them, let’s call him Patrick, did most of the talking. He said I was isolating myself, that it wasn’t healthy. I told him the same thing I told my wife. I needed space and time to think.
I blocked my wife, her family, her friends. I was selling the house, preparing it for viewings. I was busy. Pat said, “We’re not just your wife’s friends.
We’re also your friends, and we want to be here for you. ”
“You might consider yourselves friends,” I said. “But this affair was despicable, and you’ve taken a neutral stance on it. You’re still in contact with her.
I want to cut off contact with her, which means cutting out the middleman, too. ”
My family lives on the other side of the planet. That’s what I needed, not a group of people who, for all I knew, would relay everything I said back to her. Pat said, “You can’t expect us to cut her off.
We’ve known her for years, and while the affair is disturbing, it’s between the two of you. ”
“The only expectation I have is that you leave me alone. I’m not asking anyone to cut anyone off. But I’m not interested in hanging out with people who can excuse what she did for seven years.
You’re choosing to be friends with a despicable excuse for a human being. If I go looking for support, it will be from people willing to take my side. ”
Then Pat, for reasons I’ll never understand, started advocating for my wife. He asked how much time I thought I’d need before speaking to her again.
Could I ever bring myself to forgive her? Was divorce inevitable? I didn’t answer. I looked him straight in the eyes and asked, “Did you know about the affair before I did?
”
His face went red. He looked like a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar. He couldn’t hide it. I lost my cool.
“Let me tell you about the affair that you were complicit in enabling. You’ve got the arithmetic wrong. This isn’t between me and my wife. This is between me, my wife, her affair partner, his wife, his eight-year-old son, and now you too.
”
He admitted he’d known for two to three years. His wife saw the affair partner entering our house when I was away. She questioned my wife, and my wife came clean and begged her not to say anything. I filled them all in on the vasectomy, what the affair partner’s wife was now going through.
“That’s what your friend does to people. I’m not interested in having friends who are okay with that, let alone the ones who enable it. ”
They all went quiet. I asked who else knew.
Pat said it was just him and his wife. The others all said they didn’t know. Pat said hearing about the vasectomy made him feel sick. I told him I couldn’t accept his apology.
I threw them all out and told them to learn how to take a hint and not come back. That made cutting them all off a whole lot easier. I messaged the affair partner’s wife after. She told me he’d finally admitted to the vasectomy.
He claimed my wife had requested it, and that he couldn’t tell his wife because he knew she’d object. She said she couldn’t say for certain whether my wife knew about the deception. It’s incredible how people still try to play the neutral card in this situation. But I’m done with that.
I’m selling the house. I’m going to Australia. This chapter of my life closes in three months.
