She chose a Saturday, right after my team won, to sit beside me on the couch and tell me she needed to talk. I gave her my full attention. I had no idea that within minutes, my entire eight-year marriage would be over. My wife, Cecilia, started by saying she loved me, listing all the things I’d done for her, and talking about how excited she had been to start a family.

The past tense in that last part should have been my first warning. I thought she was about to say she didn’t want kids. That would have hurt, but it wouldn’t have destroyed me. Then she looked me right in the eye.
“I’m in love with someone else. ”
She just sat there, waiting for me to respond, but I couldn’t. I was too busy trying to figure out if I’d heard her correctly. When she saw I wasn’t speaking, she apologized.
She knew it was wrong. She knew she was breaking my heart. But she had to be true to herself. She still loved me, she claimed, but she loved him more, and staying with me would be a betrayal to both of us.
It sounded like the justification you read in bad romance novels. When I finally found my voice, I asked her one thing. “Who is he? ”
She stumbled over the answer, which infuriated me.
She could casually drop a bomb like that on me, but she couldn’t tell me the man’s name? The silence stretched until it was too awkward for her to bear. Eventually, she admitted it was Kyle. Kyle.
A guy she met at a work convention. They’d bonded over some anime character on her phone background. I’d never liked how much she talked about him in the beginning, and there were a couple of times he came to our city and she went to see him. I didn’t forbid it because I didn’t want to be the controlling husband.
I gave her the benefit of the doubt. She rewarded that trust by falling in love with him. I had so many questions, and I threw them at her. When did she know?
What did he do that I didn’t? Had she slept with him? She had figured out she loved him about six months ago. At first, she thought it was just a crush, but she talked to him about it, and he felt the same way.
She claimed there was nothing I did wrong. He was just a better fit. And when I asked about the sleeping together part, she tried to move past it. I had to remind her to answer.
She told me something happened, but only once, and their emotions had just gotten charged. I stood up and started pacing. I couldn’t sit still. I was so angry I felt like I might lose my mind.
I told her she needed to leave the house. She mentioned Kyle didn’t live in the same state, so she couldn’t go to him. I didn’t care. I told her I couldn’t live under the same roof with her.
She asked if there was any chance she could stay, even offering to take the guest bedroom. I told her no. Her betrayal was too deep for me to make a single concession. The fact that I wasn’t screaming was the only concession she was getting.
She needed to leave before I couldn’t take it anymore. She didn’t put up much of a fight. She knew she’d messed up and didn’t have the moral ground to argue. She’s been gone for about two weeks now, and the most annoying part is that she hasn’t filed for divorce.
She made it clear she wanted to leave me, but she was dragging her feet. I already met with a lawyer to prepare for the papers I expected her to send, but they never came. So, I decided I wasn’t going to wait for her to grow a spine. I would start the process myself.
After I took matters into my own hands and had her served at her sister’s place, she called me. She paused for a long time on the line before admitting she didn’t see any rush. I could tell what her plan was: she wanted to date Kyle officially, test the waters, and only finalize the divorce once she was sure he wasn’t a mistake. What she never realized was that I would never have taken her back.
There was no foot in the door for her. The divorce process itself was a fight. She tried to negotiate, and we almost agreed on the terms, but she kept pushing for more. I got tired of being played for a fool and told her we were going to court.
I ended up with the house and my car, but I lost a lot of money. Half of my savings, gone. Plus, I’m paying alimony for a few years. It was brutal, but there was nothing I could do.
I had loved her completely, and at the end of the day, she just saw someone she liked more and showed me zero loyalty. After it was over, I tried to move on. The hurt was still there, but I was healing. Of course, Cecilia always knew how to ruin things when they were going well.
About a month after we finished in court, she started calling me more often. Not about the divorce, but for small talk. I found it strange, but I answered a few times. Then I realized I’d never heal if I kept letting her pretend there was no bad blood between us, so I stopped picking up.
She moved to messages, and I just left them there, unread. Things escalated when she showed up at my door, just to chat. I asked her why she wasn’t with Kyle instead of bothering me. She said they hadn’t figured out who was moving to which city yet.
I told her they should prioritize that, and she said they were trying. I hinted heavily that she should leave, and she finally did. I thought she’d gotten the message. A week later, she was back on my doorstep.
This time, I wasn’t nice. I told her I didn’t have many positive emotions left for her, and I didn’t understand why she kept forcing herself into my space. I told her she was doing a terrible job of letting me heal. She looked taken aback by my bluntness, but then she finally decided to be truthful about what was going on.
She said she missed me. A lot. She admitted that she might have made a huge mistake. She couldn’t get the memories of me out of her head.
Being with Kyle wasn’t the same. It was like starting from scratch. She claimed she wasn’t trying to force us back together, but being with me made her happy, and she kept craving that happiness. I didn’t mince a single word.
I told her I wasn’t going to indulge her. She always thought about herself, but she called it putting herself first. She found someone who tickled her fancy, she left me for him, and she even slept with him. Now that she didn’t have me, she realized it wasn’t as rosy as she thought it would be, so she was trying to get back into my good graces.
I told her I wanted nothing to do with her anymore. It was my turn to put myself first, and to do that, I was cutting her off. I’d make sure her alimony was paid on time, but we would never be close again. That bridge was burned to ash.
She hadn’t even cried when she told me she loved another man, but she was crying then. It irritated me. I told her she was crying because she didn’t get her way. She would be fine; she still had Kyle.
I was the one who was alone, and if I ever chose to be with someone again, it would never be her. I walked to the door and opened it. I told her to leave and not come back. Before she stepped out, she touched my chest.
“I wish I never left. ”
I brushed her hand away and told her to step out. She did. I closed the door behind her.
That was the last time I saw her. There’s no silver lining to this story. No growth, no karma, no closure. I just went through a pile of pain because a woman wanted another man.
The only win here is that I refused to let her hurt me twice.
