Twenty total. The timing screens at Monza will reveal the truth of those figures on Friday morning.
But the details behind those numbers tell a deeper story of a team correcting its own mistakes. The turbocharger housing diameter remains the same, but everything inside it has been revised. The blade count, the blade angle, and the materials have all been changed to operate at higher temperatures.
The original turbocharger was chosen for a specific reason: to eliminate lag at race starts. Without the MGUH that previously helped turbos spool up quickly, a smaller unit reaches full boost pressure faster from low revs. Ferrari wanted an explosive start line advantage.
Then the FIA introduced the five-second pre-start procedure. Every car idles for five seconds before the race begins, enough time for any turbocharger to reach comparable boost levels regardless of size. The advantage was neutralized in round three of the season.
The penalty on the straights remained for every race thereafter. The ADU2 corrects that original decision with revised blade geometry that improves filling efficiency at high revs, sacrificing the low rev spool speed that no longer provides any competitive benefit.
The combustion chamber has been modified to extract more performance from a new Shell fuel compound, developed and homologated specifically for the Monza specification. Shell and Ferrari work in partnership, the fuel and engine developed together rather than sequentially.
The new compound is not a separate development but an integral part of what the ADU2 package delivers as a complete system. The fourth change is the software, an update to the control unit management for electrical deployment.
Technical analysis estimates the revision at approximately three to four kilowatts of additional electrical output, equivalent to roughly five horsepower. These are not extra horsepower added to the nominal power output in the conventional sense.
They are power that the system can make available more effectively, particularly in the sections of the lap where using electrical energy has the most impact on lap time. A car that deploys its electrical energy more precisely does not need more kilowatts. It needs better timing.
The software update provides that timing improvement. Combine fifteen horsepower from the mechanical changes plus approximately five from the software, and the total reaches twenty horsepower. At Monza, where the power unit deficit costs approximately three to four tenths per lap, twenty horsepower closes meaningful lap time.
The estimate of two tenths per lap is the projection for the mechanical gain alone. The software benefit is additional and harder to quantify in isolation because its value depends on how precisely Ferrari can deploy it across different circuit sections.
The choice to debut the ADU2 at Monza rather than at any earlier circuit is not an accident or a logistical coincidence. Monza was the target from the start of the 2026 season. Approximately eighty percent of the Monza lap is spent at full throttle.
The two Lesmo corners, the Ascari complex, and the Parabolica all require braking, but those braking zones are brief relative to the length of the straights they connect. The long main straight from the last corner to the first chicane is the longest sustained full throttle section on the calendar.
At this circuit, every horsepower a car does not have is visible to anyone watching the timing screen. There is no technical section to hide a power unit deficit behind. The SF26 has been hiding its engine deficit behind its chassis all season.
Barcelona high-speed corners. Hamilton One. Silverstone sustained lateral load.
Hungary tight technical corners. Ferrari was fastest in sectors two and three. Every Ferrari result in 2026 has come at a circuit where the corner speed advantage covers the straight line deficit.
Monza is the circuit where that trade-off is hardest to make, where the deficit is most amplified and the chassis advantage least available to compensate. That is why the ADU2 was always going to Monza, not because it is a home race, but because it is the circuit that tests the engine most severely.

The ADU2 is explicitly described by those close to the project as the first step toward the 679 architecture. The changes made for Monza follow the philosophy that has been decided for 2027. That continuity matters because it means the learning from Monza is not limited to 2026.
What Ferrari discover about how the revised turbocharger integrates with the SF26’s energy management system informs how they build the 679 engine that will power the 2027 car. One upgrade, two seasons of relevance.
