The moment I opened her phone, my heart started pounding in my chest. “You have a boyfriend. I don’t want to be a party to this any longer. ”

Those words were from Jonah, a guy she used to work with at the supermarket.

I knew they had been close back then, but I never thought it was like this. I scrolled up and got the full picture. Frankie and I had been together for four years. She was 29, I was 28.

I thought I was lucky to have her, she seemed like such a sweet girl. She lived in my house, I paid the rent, I paid for the electricity, the water, the food. She was trying to build some online business that was struggling to take off, so she didn’t work. She never paid a single bill.

A roof over her head, a loving boyfriend, and it still wasn’t enough for her. I’m not going to pretend to be some noble man. I’ve been burned before, so I check her phone at intervals. She doesn’t know I do it, but I go through the same routine every time, just to see if there’s something she’s not telling me.

That’s how I found out. Back when they worked together, they had hooked up. It happened a few more times, maybe three or four, while she was dating me. Then months went by without anything.

But a few weeks ago, she messaged him again, asking if he was free on the day she knew I was going to visit my brother. She wanted to restart the affair. He said no. He said it was fun while it lasted, but he had reflected, and he knew it was wrong.

He said he didn’t have an issue sleeping with her, but he felt bad doing it when she had a man, because that could be him one day. She kept pressing, he kept refusing, and eventually he told her he didn’t want to be a party to it any longer. She didn’t feel guilt. She didn’t show remorse.

She got mad and replied with “Okay. ” That was it. I went through the rest of her phone to make sure Jonah was the only one. He was.

But it didn’t matter that she wasn’t actually cheating right now. She wanted to go back. He was the one who had the sense to stop it. She only stopped because he backed out, not because she respected me.

Not because she felt bad. Because he didn’t want the mess anymore. I took screenshots of everything. I needed proof so she couldn’t deny it or gaslight me.

Then I started planning. I read up on the legal process because even though she didn’t pay rent, she had bought food items here and there. That meant she was technically a lodger, not just a guest. I couldn’t just throw her out.

I got a lawyer to draft an eviction notice. Thirty days. After that, if she didn’t leave, she would be trespassing, and I could take legal action. Her birthday was ten days away.

I decided to wait. I wanted the timing to hurt the most. On her birthday, I played the perfect boyfriend. I bought her a bag and a pair of shoes, took her to her favorite store so she could pick whatever she wanted, had a picnic at the park, then dinner at night.

She had a fantastic time. She smiled, she laughed, and every time she did, I just felt colder. I couldn’t wait to hand her that envelope. When we got home, she tried to kiss me.

I pushed her away. She was confused. I told her I had something to tell her. She smiled, probably thinking it was another surprise.

I handed her the envelope and watched her open it. She looked confused at first, like she thought the eviction was for me. Then she saw her name. She looked back at me and asked what was going on.

I told her she needed to leave the house within thirty days. She asked if it was a prank. I told her it wasn’t. I asked her to guess why I was evicting her.

She said she didn’t know. I told her to think deeply, to think of the worst things she had done during the time we’d been dating. She thought for a long time and claimed she still couldn’t think of anything. I asked her if she wanted to tell me anything about her relationship with Jonah.

She acted incredulous, claimed she had quit that job ages ago. She played dumb. I told her I had checked her phone, that I was tired of the act, and that she could decide whether she still wanted to pretend. She’s not stupid.

She made the right choice and started trying to defend herself. She said it wasn’t what it looked like. I told her to explain it to me then. She couldn’t find the words.

Nothing she could have said would have made any sense. I told her I wanted her out in three days. She said she didn’t have anywhere to go, that she had thirty days, and she would be out before there was a legal problem. But I could tell she thought those thirty days were enough time to win me back.

That was funny to me. A woman who cheated on me, trying to make me forgive her because the consequences were at her door. She spent those thirty days begging. She tried to seduce me.

She tried to cook things she thought would soften me. It was pathetic. She wasn’t doing any of that when the relationship was healthy, or when I thought it was healthy. She barely had friends in the city, very little money of her own because she always spent it on herself.

I was taking care of everything adult. I told her she would just have to figure it out. She could always try to crash with Jonah. She said that wasn’t going to work.

I knew that once she was pushed to the wall, she would reach out to him anyway. The thirty-day mark came, and very unwillingly, she packed her things. None of the furniture was hers. A friend of ours came to pick her up, and that was it.

I didn’t feel bad. I was a good person until I wasn’t, and I only changed because someone pushed me there by doing something hurtful. Things got really tough for her. She stayed with that friend for a month, and then the friend kicked her out.

She poured her heart out to a mutual friend, which is how I found out. After that, she begged Jonah to let her stay on his couch for a week. He refused. He didn’t want her making passes at him.

She claimed she wouldn’t, but he said no, consistently. She was on horrible terms with her parents, so she tried reaching out to other relatives. She got a hundred dollars total, from three different people. She was looking at places that were far too expensive for her income.

I told her she would have to look in the rougher parts of the city with what she had. She said she couldn’t drag herself back after getting used to a sensible lifestyle. She ended up with the mutual friend. That friend said she was a horrible housemate.

She tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, blamed it on her mood, but ultimately she was terrible to be around. She talked about looking for a job but never actually did it. She never left the couch. Eventually, that friend kicked her out too.

That’s when Frankie called me, straight to begging. She was tired of being kicked from place to place. She promised she would get herself together, find a job, and be out of my hair. She just needed a chance.

She was selling all her stuff for dirt cheap to lighten the load. I told her the only thing I could do for her was buy her a bus ticket back to her hometown. Her parents would never turn her away, no matter how sour things were between them. She thought about it for a second, then said, “Can’t you just help me the way I need?

It sounded edgy, like she was trying to snap at me. I shook my head and hung up. She came to my place twice to beg. The first time, I threatened to call the police, and she left.

The second time, I offered the bus ticket again. She refused it. So I threatened the police again. I haven’t seen her since.

Our mutual friend doesn’t know where she is. Everyone else I contacted doesn’t know either. After I ran out of leads, I gave up caring. I guess she’s living with someone shady, or she’s out on the streets.

Some people say it’s too much in return for cheating, but I don’t agree. Her cheating was a choice. She made that choice, and I responded the way I was legally entitled to. If we had broken up over anything else, she still would have ended up on the streets.

That’s not my fault. I wish her the best. But it won’t be with me.
