All I wanted was to see the pictures she took of me last weekend. Instead, I found a message from a man I’d never heard of on my wife’s phone. We’d been married for 12 years. I trusted her...

I only checked her phone because I wanted to see the photos she took of me last weekend. She was sleeping when I picked it up. Twelve years of marriage, and I had never once gone through her messages. I respected her privacy, and she knew it.

That night, I was just being nosy, curious about the kind of stuff she talked about with her friends. I wasn’t looking for an affair. I didn’t even suspect her of anything. Then I saw the name Scott.

I didn’t know who that was. I had already skimmed through three other conversations, but this one stood out because I had no idea this person existed in her life. The way they talked to each other was disrespectful to me as her husband. It started off as flirting, nothing super explicit, and I tried to keep my cool.

I told myself we could work through this. Then I kept reading, and I realized it wasn’t just flirting. She had fully cheated on me. I wanted to wake her up right then and there.

I was so close to flipping out. My hands were shaking, and I could feel my heart pounding in my ears. But I held back. I wanted to know exactly how far it went.

I kept reading. Scott had been in her life for about four months. They had been meeting up often to have relations. I screenshotted as much of that chat as I could, put her phone back down, and went to the living room to fume.

It was only after I was sitting there in the dark that I realized I should have checked for more messages like that. I needed more evidence. So I waited. Over the next few nights, I went through her phone again and again.

That’s when I found the rest. She had evidence of sleeping with other guys over the course of our marriage. In the last three years alone, I was able to confirm at least five different men. She lost a few phones over the years.

If she still had all the original messages, I’m sure the number would have been much higher. I thought we had a good marriage. We had rough patches like every other couple, but we always figured out how to fight out of them. That’s what hurts the most.

I thought things were working. I thought we were fine. While I was busy believing that, she was living a completely different life in the background. I didn’t know how to confront her.

I didn’t know how you even start a conversation like that. I’m a man who avoids arguments and making a fuss. I always do my best to keep the peace. But when your wife has slept with at least five other men during your marriage, that’s one of those times when confrontation is unavoidable.

I hate it, but it is what it is. I met with a divorce lawyer and did all of that stuff first. I cleaned up our financials and backed up all the screenshots. Someone suggested getting the numbers of each of her affair partners, so I did that too.

My lawyer said it was a smart move. Then, as soon as everything was ready, I confronted her. I made sure to haul our son off to neutral ground first, so he wouldn’t be involved when things got really messy. Then I sat her down and asked her to have a very serious conversation with me.

I asked her if she had ever cheated on me. She started with an immediate no. But when she saw how serious I was, I think she chose to tell a minor truth so that I would trust her. After all, why would she be lying if she had the balls to say something that made her look bad?

She claimed she might have shared a kiss with someone in the second year of our marriage. She said it was quick and she pulled away as soon as it registered. It didn’t last up to two seconds. I nodded.

I asked if she was telling the truth, and whether that was the only time. She said she was sure that it was. I nodded again, and things were quiet for a long time. She was nervous.

She asked me if someone had told me something. I let her know that no one had told me anything. What I knew, I found out by myself. Then I mentioned every single one of their names.

She claimed she didn’t recognize them. She said she didn’t know the point of the names I was mentioning. I asked her whether or not I would find those names in her phone, and what I would find her saying to them. No surprise, she hit me with the “You went through my phone?

I pointed out that I had been through her phone many times, and she never protested. She claimed it wasn’t the same thing, because those times she knew I wasn’t snooping through her messages. I asked her if she was really trying to make me going through her phone the primary issue instead of the fact that she had slept with five other men during our marriage. She knew it sounded stupid, so she piped down.

Her next move was claiming that it probably wasn’t what it looked like. I asked if she wanted us to go over the messages together, or whether I could hand them to a third party and see the conclusion they would reach. She didn’t want either of my options, obviously. I asked her for an explanation, but she literally couldn’t say a word.

It wasn’t the kind of silence where she was being defiant or owning up to what she had done. It was the kind where I had gotten her into the worst position ever, and she couldn’t find her way out of it. I told her we were going to get divorced. She made a confused face, like it surprised her.

There was no way we were going to remain together, and she knew that. She tried to protest or plead, I don’t know which one it was, because I didn’t wait to hear it. I left the room to get away from her and find space to breathe. When I returned, I came back with our son.

She tried to have a conversation with me at multiple points, but I didn’t want it. There was nothing to talk about. When she cornered me and forced me to listen, it was to say that she was sorry. I laughed.

How was that ever supposed to be enough to fix someone cheating on you so intensely? That gave me the chance to ask her whether I was meant to believe those were the only people she had ever cheated on me with, whether the five people I had evidence of were the only five. Her first swing was to quietly say yes. That made me laugh again.

I asked her again, a lot firmer, and this time she was more hesitant. I just nodded and pushed past her. She had already been served with the papers. I was just waiting for the divorce.

I couldn’t wait to be done with her. The numbers of her affair partners turned out to be my trump card. I gave them to a private investigator who was able to get me the identities of all the people she had cheated on me with. My lawyer approved this move.

The whole point was that if we could find that she was exposing herself to unsavory people, that’s not the kind of risk we could take with my son. Guess what? It was like we had hit the jackpot. Most of the men were just regular people, but one of them wasn’t.

This was a person with a criminal record, and a pretty extensive one, including certain crimes that will get you put on a list. That was all we needed, especially because that happened to be Scott, the most recent guy I was able to prove she had slept with. I really couldn’t believe my luck. I was aiming for majority custody, even if it was 70/30.

As luck would have it, my lawyer was an absolute shark, and I was an absolutely great father at the same time. Both of those really helped me get full custody. Obviously, the judge wasn’t thrilled by the idea of a woman who made a secret life involving so many different men. It seemed like someone who had a problem, and there was no way to believe it would stop just because we were apart.

In fact, she’d have the freedom to do whatever she wanted, which would only make things worse. The judge wasn’t comfortable with the idea of her choosing to sleep with a bunch of different guys and not even being able to tell the good from the bad, especially when she would be the single person looking over our child during some of those moments. The final nail in the coffin was how much I showed myself with our child. She was the kind of person trying to curate her social media page to look glamorous, but that wasn’t me.

I don’t care that much about that. My stuff is what I like to post, and it is mostly family stuff. I’m the one who handles all his school stuff, showing up on open days, going to PTA meetings, and showing up for his sports games. You might not even know she has a child with the way she presents herself online.

With that, I was able to get full custody. I was shocked at how much her defenses were falling apart. She tried her best, but she didn’t get the judge to sway. He said they could revisit the custody arrangement at a later date, but straight out of the divorce, my son was going to be with me.

I actually had to hold back tears hearing that. I know my kid doesn’t deserve to not have a mother in his life, especially when she’s not exactly a horrible mom, but I couldn’t put my son at the risk of the strange men she couldn’t resist. The house was basically a shoe-in once I got custody. She was going to get alimony and half her money, but those were the only ways she was going to win.

The custody arrangement hit her hard. She reached out to tell me how unfair I had been, sitting around and letting things happen that way. She said I could have put in a word for her to make sure she’d be able to spend time with her son. I had to ask her why I would do that.

There was no reason for me to put such a word in for her, because I didn’t want her to have custody. I pointed out Scott. She said she didn’t know that about him, but it didn’t matter to me. If she had kept herself in the marriage, she wouldn’t have needed to know it.

That was the simple thing she didn’t seem to understand. She assured me she was going to fight it, but I’m not afraid. I can see how much the whole thing broke her, and I’m only amused by it. All of this is entirely her fault.

I literally don’t play a part in any of this beyond choosing to divorce her. And that’s what anyone reasonable is meant to do after all. If she eventually gets custody back, then great. Hopefully she will be a better person by that point.

If she doesn’t, then I’m still happy. The funniest thing is how she keeps trying to paint me as the villain. I can tell that the whole thing has really stung her, and that’s funny to me. She’s drinking sweet, sweet karma, and she needs to get used to the taste.

I’ve had fun sharing videos and pictures of me and my son going out to have fun. And it is breaking her apart seeing us happy without her. We’re happy without her most times, but it stings so bad because she doesn’t even get the chance to be in the picture. That’s what I like most.

I might try to get a PI to trail her ahead of the next custody hearing. She clearly enjoys the life of sleeping around. She’s going to continue, and I just need to make sure that I have the evidence of that so I can ruin her chance of the custody arrangement changing. As much as she doesn’t show up, I know that she loves the kid.

But she doesn’t love him as much as I do. If she did, she would never have gone sleeping around when it had the potential to ruin the peaceful home the poor boy was growing up in. Sadly, that will never be the same, and I will make sure that as soon as he is old enough to understand, he knows exactly what she did to cause this. I don’t need to protect her, and thankfully, I will always have the screenshots.

She did this to herself. If she chooses to hate me for it, then so be it. But I’ll always know that it wasn’t my fault. At the end of the day, we can only always move forward.

So that’s what I plan to do.
