Amy Duggar King Says She Spent ‘Probably Thousands’ on Clothes and Beauty Products to Look Camera-Ready

Amy Duggar King says appearing on her family’s reality show came with an unexpected financial burden: the pressure to constantly look flawless.

 

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE ahead of the release of her memoir Holy Disruptor: Shattering the Shiny Facade While Getting Louder with the Truth, the 38-year-old opened up about how difficult it was to keep up with the image she believed viewers expected from her during her time on 19 Kids and Counting.

Unlike some of her relatives, Amy says she was responsible for paying for much of what she wore and used while filming, including clothes, makeup and hair products.

She remembers feeling overwhelmed by the realization that millions of people could see her on television.

“I was scrambling to keep up,” Amy says. With little money available, she relied heavily on inexpensive stores, joking that Goodwill and Dollar Tree became essential to surviving the experience.

Amy says she convinced herself that she needed to look perfect whenever the cameras were rolling. She wanted clear skin, fashionable clothes and the newest beauty products, even though maintaining that appearance was financially difficult.

The pressure became even stronger as social media began taking off. Instagram was still relatively new at the time, but Amy says its growing influence affected the way she viewed herself.

 

Looking back, she estimates that she spent “probably thousands” repeatedly buying clothes, cosmetics and other items in an effort to maintain a fresh appearance.

One of the habits she developed was avoiding wearing the same outfit twice.

“Once I wear something, and someone sees me in something, then that’s that moment in time,” she explains, adding that she would often sell or get rid of an item after wearing it.

Even today, Amy says she still has a tendency to think that way, although her love of secondhand shopping has made the habit more sustainable.

Thrifting, she explains, has always been meaningful to her because of her grandmother, who introduced her to searching for inexpensive finds.

“I still love thrifting, till this day, because of my grandma,” Amy says. “She taught me that.”

 

Her upcoming memoir promises to explore much more than her experience on television. Holy Disruptor looks back at Amy’s years within the Duggar family and her journey toward breaking away from expectations and labels she says shaped her life.

The book also reflects on how she has rebuilt herself in the years following the public collapse of the Duggar family’s carefully maintained image.
