Three years together. Cancer scares, funerals, real life crisis after real life crisis, and I thought we were solid. Then I saw her in the background of her company’s New Year’s party video on...

I was scrolling through Instagram when I saw my girlfriend kissing another man. Not in a photo someone sent me. Not in a message she accidentally forwarded. In the background of a corporate TikTok her company posted of their New Year’s Eve party.

Two seconds of footage, out of focus, but unmistakable. Her face pressed against some guy’s face, her hands holding his cheeks like she meant it. My name is irrelevant. I’m 28, she’s 27, and we’d been together for three years.

Cassie and I had been through real things. A cancer scare on my end, good prognosis, but terrifying. A devastating loss on hers that I helped her survive. We were the couple who stuck together when life got ugly.

I thought we were building something permanent. I was planning to propose. Then her company posted that video, and the future I’d been picturing cracked right down the middle. She worked for one of those companies obsessed with their social media presence.

They were always doing trends, events, photo ops, trying to stay relevant. The party was for employees who didn’t have a place to go for New Year’s, which made sense because they hired a lot of immigrants who were far from family. When she told me about it, I said it was a great idea. She asked me to go with her, but I wanted us to spend the day together, just the two of us.

She wanted that too, she said, which is why she wanted me there. But I didn’t know anyone at her workplace, and the idea of spending New Year’s surrounded by strangers made me uncomfortable. We fought about it. We didn’t resolve it.

We just agreed to do our own thing, and I spent the night with a friend. It took a few days for the tension to fade. A few sincere conversations, a lot of awkward silences, and then we were back to normal. I thought we were fine.

I thought we had gotten through it. Then I saw the video. I wasn’t looking for trouble. I was just curious if I could spot her in the footage, see if she’d had fun.

She wasn’t in the foreground anywhere. But during the countdown clip, I saw a flash of color in the background. Her sweater. The same one I’d seen her wear a dozen times.

I leaned closer to the screen, convinced I was wrong. I wasn’t. In the blurry background, I could make out the front of her face pressed against the front of some man’s face, her hands cradling his jaw. The clip lasted two seconds before cutting away.

It was enough. I went to the closet and pulled out the sweater. Compared it to the video. It was her.

No doubt. I considered every possible way to get the original footage. I couldn’t hack anyone’s phone. I couldn’t convince the social media manager to hand over raw files.

This was all I had, and I had to make it count. I saved the video to my phone and to a cloud drive. Then I started thinking about what I was going to say. I hate confrontation, but I’ve never been able to hide from important ones.

This was about as important as it gets. I just needed to figure out when. As logical as I tried to be about it, it hurt. It hurt bad.

Realizing everything I had built with the woman I loved could end because of a kiss. She thought she was in a private moment, but she was immortalized. And I was the one who had to end things. A few days passed.

Cassie started acting weird. Especially when I was on my phone. She’d come up and cuddle me, which normally would have been sweet, but I noticed the pattern. She only did it when I was using my phone and she couldn’t see the screen.

When I opened Instagram, where her company had posted the video, I could see her body tense up. She knew. She knew she was in that video, and she wasn’t going to say a word about it. She just wanted to bury it and hope I never found out.

That made me angrier than the kiss itself. I didn’t confront her right away. I sat with my thoughts for a couple of days, playing out every possible outcome. Then I went to her and said I needed to talk about the New Year’s party.

Her face changed instantly. She looked cautious, guarded. I told her I’d seen something in the video her company posted and I needed to know the truth. “What was it that you saw?

” she asked. Like she hadn’t watched the video herself. I didn’t buy it for a second. “In the video, there’s a part where I can see you in the background, and you’re kissing a man.

She started to act surprised. I cut her off. I told her not to pretend this was news to her, because it wouldn’t get her anywhere. I had the video.

I would show it to her. And we’d still be right back at this moment. She paused for a few seconds. Then she went for the classic.

“It’s not what it looks like, though. I swear. ”

I almost laughed. I told her to explain it, because I was genuinely curious.

She said emotions were high. It was New Year’s. She was lonely because I hadn’t come with her. She didn’t set out to kiss anyone.

She’d told her coworker, the guy in the video, about how I’d decided to stay home, and he’d cheered her up. He stuck around for her all night. Then they got to talking about New Year’s traditions, and she mentioned New Year’s kisses. He said he’d never shared one with anyone.

She felt bad for him. She was lonely. She’d had a little to drink. The countdown started, and there was so much pressure, and before she knew it, she grabbed him and just made it happen.

“There was no love or emotion behind it,” she said. “It was just a kiss. Platonic. I don’t feel anything for him.

I really hope you believe me. ”

I understood the picture she was trying to paint. But even if I believed every word, it didn’t change what she did. She chose to disrespect me in an unforgivable way.

She could have left that to any of her single coworkers. It never had to be her. The only reason she did it was because she didn’t think she’d get caught. That’s why her excuse was garbage.

I told her as much. I made it clear that whether I believed her or not, she had chosen to hurt me. She knew she would be furious if the roles were reversed. She kept trying to argue, but there was no way for her to wriggle out of it.

Cheating isn’t always physical intimacy in a bed. This was the tip of the iceberg, and I wasn’t going to wait around to see how much worse it could get. When she realized there was no fixing it, she started crying. I felt bad for her, but I wasn’t going to let that soften me.

I told her it would be best for her to leave the house. To my surprise, she packed a few things and was gone within ten minutes, crying the whole time. I sat in that house by myself, feeling horrible. Not because I kicked her out, but because I was single again in the worst possible way.

I never thought I’d have to endure the pain of being cheated on. It hurt more than I imagined. But at least it was over. She came back a few days later to pick up the rest of her things.

She was cold, barely said a word. I was fine with that. Then, on some random day, she showed up again. Not drunk, not emotional.

Just aggressive. She told me I’d been an asshole to her. That she hadn’t done anything truly wrong. She’d talked to her friends about it.

She’d even asked ChatGPT. They all told her it was morally questionable but not a cardinal sin, and that two mature partners could work past it. She said I hadn’t even given us a chance to fix things. I was so hurt by the kiss that I forgot about everything we’d built and just threw it all away.

She said the kiss was on the same level as her kissing her sister or one of her girlfriends. No romantic intention. Just friendly. She really believed she had a point.

She really thought I was going to agree that I was in the wrong for being mad at my girlfriend for kissing another person of her own free will. “If the roles were reversed,” I asked her, “would you have given me the same grace? ”

“Yes,” she said, without hesitation. “If you came to me and told me all your friends and AI backed you up, I would have given you the benefit of the doubt.

I didn’t bother arguing. It was clear she was delusional. I told her it was time to leave. That set her off.

She got really angry and told me I was being a fool. If I just listened to her, I would see that she was making sense. But I chose to be stubborn. Standing there, watching her die on the hill that kissing another man could be excused, I couldn’t help but laugh internally.

“I know you miss me, and that’s fine,” I said as she turned to leave. “But this is the worst way I’ve ever seen someone try to get back together. ”

Bad idea. “I don’t want to get back with you,” she snapped.

“You’re ugly. Your dick is tiny. And you’re a sad excuse for a man. I came to give you a chance to see the truth, but you’re too stupid for that.

It stung. Just a little. I knew it wasn’t true, but harsh words hurt anyway. And that was the exact moment I knew I needed to get back at her.

I had the video saved. Instead of just sending the link, I sent the downloaded file. That way, no one could take it down or block it. I wrote a concise message explaining that they’d see my girlfriend kissing someone else in the background.

I even edited the clip to circle her, so no one would miss it. I added a photo of her in that sweater to prove it was her. I included her explanation for why she kissed him, word for word. I sent it to all her friends whose numbers I had.

I sent it to her family. I posted it in public spaces wherever I could. My goal was to make sure as many people as possible saw the video, because with the way her mood had soured, I was sure she was spreading a very different version of events. I wasn’t going to let her control the narrative.

My phone blew up. People asking for details, asking if I’d been hacked. And then, of course, she reached out. That was my favorite part.

She was furious, throwing every insult she could think of. But this time, I didn’t care. I knew it was coming, and seeing her rage made me feel better. I told her she’d shared the story with her friends and an AI, so I was sharing it with the world.

Now everyone could judge us with the whole thing out in the open. Most opinions were in my favor. About ten percent saw her angle, and unsurprisingly, they were all women. She tried to flip the script and reply to the posts, but it had no effect.

Eventually, she blocked me. She hasn’t unblocked me or tried to reach out since. And I’m glad things ended the way they did. I don’t want anything else to do with that woman.

She thought she could call it platonic. There’s nothing platonic about pressing your face against some guy’s face during the countdown while your boyfriend is at home. That’s cheating, plain and simple. She got caught because she was reckless.

She chose a cheap thrill over the person who’d been there for her through real life crises. And then she had the audacity to try to gaslight me afterward, pretending she did nothing wrong and acting like I was overreacting. She cried, she insulted me, she tried to flip the story. Meanwhile, I had caught her red-handed.

She’s the one who should be embarrassed. Not just for the kiss, but for thinking she could manipulate the situation, spin it, and come out looking like the victim. I ended things, and that was the smartest decision I could have made.
